Corpses on the streets of Ecuador. "The images are real", says Argentine footballer in Guayaquil

The Covid-19 pandemic is having dramatic consequences in Ecuador, where hospitals are full, morgues out of space and funeral homes refusing work - which is causing people not knowing what to do with the corpses of family members who die infected with the disease. There are hundreds of bodies on the streets.

The report that arrives from that country - where the official statistics points to 3,368 confirmed cases and 145 deaths - has been repeated and confirmed by many who live there. Argentine footballer Leandro Vega, a former River Plate player, told the Argentine daily Clarín about what has been happening in the city of Guayaquil - the most affected by the outbreak in that country and home of Emelec, where Vega currently plays.

“The images are real. They leave people dead on the street, on sidewalks, in houses. They are not going to pick them up and burn them, ”said Vega. “They don't want to lift the dead off the streets. You cannot believe what you see, we are suffering, it is terrible. ”

“We are afraid, yes. And I am more afraid because I worked with a kinesiologist who came home to help me recover from my injury and is now infected. A week and a half ago he stopped coming because he started with the symptoms and three days ago he tested positive. So, you never know when the virus might arrive. It's scary, ”he said.

“You can't go to hospitals because they are collapsed and the doctors are all busy. One of the club's employees tested positive and is at home because two days ago he went to a hospital and was out all day without being able to see him, ”recalled Vega.
