That ground hog is very cute So I take it you didn't feel that quake (the 5.4 in Vancouver, which was initially a 6.1 on my phone app)? Bear was definitely sensing that. A bit concerning he is still responding strange today. I would not be surprised to see something larger in the Vancouver area, stay alert please. Cali should also be on high alert. |

Simple27 (OP) User ID: 40488826 United States 07/22/2020 02:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Since we've been chatting about asteroids recently I wanted to drop this in here. are the astronomy observatories all closed? Due to COVID? Except for the government ones? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79166530 COVID-19 forces Earth's largest telescopes to close An Astronomy magazine tally has found that more than 100 of Earth’s biggest research telescopes have closed in recent weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a trickle of closures in February and early March has become an almost complete shutdown of observational astronomy. And the closures are unlikely to end soon. Observatory directors say they could be offline for three to six months — or longer. In many cases, resuming operations will mean inventing new ways of working during a pandemic. And that might not be possible for some instruments that require teams of technicians to maintain and operate. As a result, new astronomical discoveries are expected to come to a crawl. “If everybody in the world stops observing, then we have a gap in our data that you can’t recover,” says astronomer Steven Janowiecki of the McDonald Observatory in Texas. “This will be a period that we in the astronomy community have no data on what happened.” [link to astronomy.com (secure)] Last Edited by Simple27 on 07/22/2020 02:32 PM ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

For reference, that was VERY far from Vancouver - about 300KM, across the Georgia Strait, across Vancouver Island, and over 200KM West of Tofino, in the ocean - and MUCH of the intervening distance is sedimentary base. There was never a chance of this being felt in Vancouver. Heck, I would have been shocked if it were detectable off of the East side of the Island where I am (imagine an equilateral triangle, with Tofino on the east bottom point, and the EQ epicentre on the West point - I'd be almost exactly the north point.) More likely for people to have felt the Scott Islands quake here, though it's been severely underreported, which is odd. Closer to Vancouver Island, closer to the plate edge, and shallower. Ah well, oddities abound today! ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. Usually best described by, “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” |
