LEONID FIREBALL AND SMOKE TRAIL: Last night, a piece of Comet Tempel-Tuttle exploded over Missouri. Dan Bush photographed the fireball, which was so bright it cast shadows and momentarily blinded the camera:

"When I made the video, I had to leave out the brightest frame because it overwhelmed the stack of images, turning it all white," says Bush.

The aftermath was just as interesting as the fireball itself. "Note the smokey trail of debris," points out Bush. "It hung in the sky, twisting in the winds of the upper atmosphere for more than 5 minutes after the flash."

Comet Tempel-Tuttle is the source of the annual Leonid meteor shower, which peaked on Nov. 17-18 with peak rates near 15 meteors per hour. Sometimes, though, just one Leonid is enough.

SUNSET PLANETS: When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look south. The crescent Moon is near Jupiter and Saturn. Jean-Baptiste Feldman sends this picture from Ladoix-Serrigny, France:

"The Moon was approaching the two planets on Nov. 18th," says Feldman. "They will be even closer tonight."

This is a good opportunity to locate Jupiter and Saturn; you'll want to keep an eye on them in the weeks ahead. The two giant planets are in the early stages of a Great Conjunction. For the next month, they'll converge until, on Dec. 21st, they lie only 0.1 degrees apart--an incredible pairing. This will be the first Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since the year 2000, and the closest Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since the year 1623!

Looks like Telica volcano in Nicaragua is moving around and might have something to do with this-

Current status: minor activity or eruption warning (3 out of 5)

Explosive eruption of the volcano continues at fluctuating intensity characterized by occasional ash emissions.
Since 29 October INETER recorded 9 small explosions containing emissions of water vapor, gases and small amounts of ash.
Ash plumes rose 820 ft-1,968 ft (250 m-600 m) above the summit crater.

There's also the Masaya volcano, which is listed as erupting but it doesn't appear to be doing too much. The one above seems more active, despite the lesser warning rank.

Current status: erupting (4 out of 5)

According to news reports, ash was emitted from Masaya on 15 October, causing very minor ashfall in Colonia 4 de Mayo, 6 km NW.

ETA: Most of the quakes happening are offshore though, so I almost think this is not necessarily related to volcanic activity. Which is almost more concerning, that might indicate a biggie is brewing.

The local wildlife control officials are to blame, imo.

Takaya was captured by local wildlife control. But instead of returning the famous wolf to his previous eastern island territory officials relocated Takaya to the other side of Vancouver Island, an unfamiliar environment for the 11-year-old wolf.

Then, tragedy struck. On March 24, Takaya was shot and killed after he got too close to a hunter’s dogs. The incident happened near Shawnigan Lake which is about 30 miles from where he was relocated.
