Indiana University on Lock Down...warns of armed person. Much ado about nothing, what's really going on?

Haha, this is ridiculous!! All of America and then the world will be on lockdown soon enough.

"Armed individual at large on campus. Take shelter in nearest room," the university said on its Twitter account. "All of campus should be considered in danger."

Unless they are not telling all I can't understand why they are locking down the entire campus because one drunk guy had a fight and took a swipe at someone with his knife.

Exactly what I was thinking, seems like a bit of over reaction fear mongering to get people used to the shelter in place drill

The phone alert that went out was "IU Bloomington Alert! An armed individual is at large on the BL campus. Take safe shelter. Lock door. Follow instructions from authorities."

I can understand being cautious but it was at the top of the news on CNN. Seems a bit much for a drunk Sophomore that got into a fight.

It does seem to be a bit much. I especially like that part about "Follow instructions from authorities."

However I am told that not long ago they had a guy randomly attacking people on the street with a knife and several people got hurt. So that was their supposed reason for the "lockdown"

Didn't appear he was running about, I am guessing they don't know where he is. Probably passed out in a stairwell somewhere with no recollection of what happened.

They want to find him. It's a lot easier to find a drunk slasher if everyone else is in the nearest building.

I am just sort of mind boggled at the idea of locking it all down. The campus is scattered all over the city of Bloomington.

If you were looking for a drunk slasher, wouldn't it be easier to spot him if everyone on campus is inside a building looking at each other and tweeting about it?

Think these will come into play soon?

If he knows he's in trouble he'd probably go and hide somewhere. Who knows what his state of mind is if he was drinking.

Still, if there is a fight in the neighborhood and some guy pulls a knife they don't shut down a 10 block radius and have people stay indoors unless the guy proves to be a credible threat with his tomato knife.

They do not have a way they can actually "lock down the campus" it covers and is mixed in with just way too many private homes and businesses. They can lock the buildings that IU owns, and the dorms but that is not a tenth of the space the person could be in. And saying campus did lock down it might get the kids that live in the dorms and even the frats but that still leaves 1,000 of private homes and people not under the forced lock down by IU security .

I would not be surprised, Bloomington not being much like the rest of the state I could see this happening there.
