Patrick25 User ID: 95716 Canada 05/24/2006 03:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 10.5 could only happen if there was a fault running around the entire globe...(There isn't one!). The 9.6, 9.7 are the worst ones we will ever see. Mind you - a 9.7 in California would be devastating! But there's no evidence that one is imminent...According to most leading seismologists, a 'big one' is inevidable though..sometime within the next 10,000 years or so. Remember that a 9.7 is 10+ (I don't remember the exact formula) time more powerful than a 9.6...it's exponential... |

Adamic Seed User ID: 97283 Canada 05/24/2006 03:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Of course, it could be about hemorrhoids AND anal sex. I'll return you to your regularly scheduled dose of doom 'n' gloom in a sec. Lions and tigers and earthquakes oh my! And you thought EQ damage was bad...wait 'til you try it Greek style! Johnny cash surely knew VERY personally about, "the burning ring of fire'. EQ In San Andreas? Don't you have a gay town down there? That word's hard to spell: hemorrhoids. [From Middle English emoroides, hemorrhoids, from Old French emoroides, from Latin haemorrhoidae, from Greek haimorrhoïdes, pl. of haimorrhoïs, from haimorrhoos, flowing with blood : haimo-, hemo- + rhein, to flow.] --- You do realise I'm kidding here? I'm liberal arts fer cristsakes! Besides, I have had no premonitions for this date, so relax! (your spincter!) |
Patrick25 User ID: 95716 Canada 05/24/2006 03:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 74037: You must be talking about the 6.0 earthquakes that are produced consistently every 20-24 or so years. This is diffrent from "the big one" forecasted to happen sometime in the future. (no one knows when) The infrastructure is built to withstand a 6.0 quake no problem. It's the 7.8+ ones we need to worry about. Here's the good data on this fault: [link to en.wikipedia.org] And Ashchaya - you are right about the moon :) In fact, we'd probably be instantly liquified - the earth's mantle would turn to molten rock instantly...THAT'S an end of the world type thing... Thankfully though, the moon's not going to fall to earth anytime soon .. in fact, it's slowly moving away from earth at a couple of centimeters per year. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 95276 United States 05/24/2006 03:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Record rain for the area and now earthquake swarms...any connection? Official one day rainfall total is new record for downtown San Diego. Tuesday, May 23, 2006 Lindbergh Field Monday morning recorded close to an inch of rain – .77 of an inch, more than doubling the record for the date. The previous high rainfall total for May 22, set in 1921, was .36 of an inch. The California Highway Patrol reported more than 100 ccidents across San Diego County roads and freeways as the unusually strong storm helped make a mess of the morning commute. There were 117 crashes reported between midnight and 8 a.m., when the rain stopped, said CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt. He said that on a day with good weather, the CHP usually responds to 50 to 75 crashes. Flooded streets and intersections were reported in Mission Beach and other low-lying coastal areas in San Diego. In National City, heavy rain was to blame for a roof partially collapsing at an apartment building on South Highland Avenue near 13th Street shortly after 5:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. Patrick25 User ID: 95716 Canada 05/24/2006 03:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There's no correlation between rainwater and earthquakes that I know of. In fact, if I think about it, rainwater wouldn't even reach passed a few KMs (I'm being generous here) underground. Earthquakes are generated 10km+ down..Some even 40km+ underground. The water would never reach the fault. It has been raining quite a bit lately however.. Here in Ottawa also. Spring will be Spring though... It's forecasted to be a hot/dry summer, so let's take advantage of it! |
