I've always been one that requires pretty hard proof of things, and I'm also not afraid to do the work myself. If there is a completely tangible basis for it too, even better. We can argue that a cat is not a "cat." Maybe one of them is a lynx, and you don't think that a lynx is a "cat," but who ever argued that 1 + 1 didn't equal 2? ...or rather, who would argue whether or not you have two fists or not (if you do) when you can punch them in the face with them. It would take a pretty dense idiot to then argue whether or not they were punched in the face, unless they were hit well enough, I suppose. In some cases, maybe that is the point after all... The book "number" that this is from is XXVII, or 27. There are twenty-seven symbols listed. The handwriting in the margins is not mine, at least not this current incarnation's handwriting. ;) The key distinction here is a concept of "Nothing" which allows for change, the "Tao", and two polarities, the "Yin" and the "Yang." Here is the "Nothing" that is mentioned, and the first verse of the text in question: :T000: "Here is Nothing under its three forms. It is not, yet informeth all things." These take the qualities of the integers 0, 1 and 2, but we won't use the Arabic numeral symbols that are so popular with Christians and Jews... I won't take the time to try to "prove" any sort of axiomatic basis for simple arithmetic like addition, multiplication, and exponentiation unless you REALLY NEED one, though it is likely that it cannot even be done. This was all written in the early 1900's, and there was a task, or a few parts of a task that were given at that time. |
