Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Well, I have some solar power, enough to run my freezer and lights, radio etc.

I can't find any reliable information on how EMPS's affect solar panels though. I know that there is a diode that I may need to replace, maybe. And it may fry the charge controller. A project on the board for me is to make a faraday cage for the controller and inverter. I have the stuff, I just need to do it.

In the reading I have done, not everything will be fried. . I've read that some areas, depending on their cover, will be shaded. Think of a car under a carport.

I'm looking to build a home at some point. One room will be shielded in aluminum screening, then sheetrocked. This room will house all solar components and the freezer, and serve as storage for other electronics.

I thought things needed to be encased in a special cage in order to be shielded from an EMP attack? THIS is interesting though...

Your microwave as a Faraday cage
Microwaves work by exciting water molecules in food, translating to an increase in temperature. Microwave ovens use non-ionizing microwave radiation at a frequency of 2.45 GHz (near the range of your cell phone), causing water in the your leftovers to absorb energy. As the water molecules absorb energy, the receive partial charges - a negative charge at one end and a positive charge at the other, causing the molecules to spin constantly. The water molecules start to hit each other, sending kinetic energy out as heat.

Humans have been at our current evolutionary level for at least 50,000 years.

Up to just 100 years ago, the norm was a family-run no-utilities self-sufficient homestead that got everything it needed locally.

Have we really slid so far?

I'm a well urbanized animal. If I can ride out the initial die-offs or round-ups or whatever, and assuming whatever gets everyone else doesn't get me too, I can easily live on the junk and remains of a city. Hell, there must be thousands of solar garden lanterns stuck in lawns within a 5 minute walk of me. One car battery and an AC converter, I have power back. Hell, three alternators and a source of running water, say dropping a water wheel in the storm sewer, I have power again.

Solar panel + 12v pump + tubes + bucket = self-powered hydroponic bed. Dig a hole in the ground, line with hay or dead grass or old insulation or anything at all, place sheet of glass on top, greenhouse.

If our relatives 2 or 3 generations back had our amount of useful crap kicking around and going to waste (and knew how to use it), they would have used it to supplement their already self-sufficient homesteads and would practically be living in utopia.

Hell, if I had the free time and ability to scavenge scrap crap that nobody will care about post-doom, I'll be fine.

If I share this knowledge with others and help them do the same, I can participate in restarting civilization. That my simian life should have such relevance in this age of pointlessness would be an honor.

I appreciate your self-assured post, however, have you considered the level of damage most people will suffer? In fact, ALL micro circuitry will be fried.

Every single thing that has any little microcomputer chip in it will be fried, unless you store it now in a faraday cage. I don't know enough about generators to know if they use any of that type of circuitry. But my fridge? Prolly gone, the thermostat is probably wired by microchips. Freezer? Same. Coffee maker? Yup. Anything with a digital read-out, is how I'm gauging it.

OK, so I live in FL, I have spent days/weeks cooking over a BBQ grill to eat, and I also have solar powered lights, but what about when the food is gone? I mean, I have food in my fridge and freezer that the generator could save until the gas is gone. I have SOME canned food to eat - but never could get a garden going, wouldn't know how.

My point is, I guess what I'm saying is I feel like I'm in better shape than the majority of citizens, but I still feel like my chances are slim to none of surviving an EMP for more than a few weeks.

Good post, OP. Made me look harder at what I'm doing to prepare, and bil just gave us a copy of One Second After. I will start reading it today.

OK if done a ton of research into this subject and its very clear that a 20 kiloton weapon detonated between 80 and 120 miles up would not cause the extream damage most people like to talk about. It would take a megaton clas weapon to knock out everything.

A kiloton class weapon would more than likely damage the electrical grid and most likely anything plugged into a wall outlet. It would not make all vehicles come to a screaming halt, planes would not fall out of the sky and any hand held items should be fine. Generators will work as lomg as they are not connected to your house circuit. This due to the free electrons racing from the sky trying to fing ground. Theybwill passaround anthing that is not at a better ground potential the well, the ground. The only real tests go back to the 60's and the megaton class weapons are the ones that showed noticable effects.

Concerned Officials Warn: “North Korea Could Explode a High-Altitude Nuclear Device Over the US”

Message from Phoenix:

If you are not aware I am going to point a few things out.

1. Below you will find the trailer for the game "Homefront" that came out in 2010 which is about the attack of the USA by North Korea...the story begins with N. Korea launching a communications satellite which is in fact a hidden EMP bomb!

2. You may not be aware but Korea in fact DID launch a "weather satellite" on Dec 11th 2012.

3. That "weather satellite" has a strange orbit and is at the perfect altitude for an EMP blast and also passes over the US main land every 90 min.

We could have a North Korean EMP weapon over head capable of wiping out all of our power grid in the USA right now!

Below I am posting the articles, the trailer for the game and also a link to track the "weather satellite" in real time.

Have a Plan and Plan to Act.

Phoenix

First...the game trailer from 2010

Next... the launch in 2012:

North Korea rocket launch: satellite successfully sent into orbit
The international community has strongly criticised North Korea after Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket test that it claimed had succeeded in sending a satellite into orbit.
[link to www.telegraph.co.uk]

Here you can track the satellite in real time:

[link to n2yo.com]

Next an article from yesterday:

Concerned Officials Warn: “North Korea Could Explode a High-Altitude Nuclear Device Over the US”

U.S. officials quietly are expressing concern that North Korea could use its “space launch vehicle” to explode a high-altitude nuclear device over the United States, creating an electromagnetic pulse that would destroy major portions of the U.S. electrical grid system as well as the nation’s critical infrastructures. The concern is so great that U.S. officials who watch North Korea closely are continually monitoring the status of the North Korean “space launch vehicle,” whose status could suggest a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States. They are aware of the three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a “package,” which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be deorbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, creating an EMP effect.

The impact would be catastrophic.“Preparing for months without a commercial source of clean water (city water pressure is often dependent on electric pumping to storage towers) and stoppage of sewage treatment facilities willrequire net methods of survival particularly in populated areas,” the military study said.

Good thread. thumbs

I'm about as prepared as I can reasonably be. I could do more, but I'm not wealthy enough to do it all at one time, so I prep a little at a time as I can. Thank God we don't live in a city. Still, even in the country we may have to deal with people wandering around looking for food.

If/when the lights go out for an extended time, things are going to get nasty. If anyone reading this thread hasn't seriously begun prepping already, you better get your butt in gear or you will become a statistic.

I don't believe there is going to be any EMP, but I like to be prepared 'just in case' so at the moment I am mentally prepping, making a list of the things I need to get. My number one is water and food that will last a long time before going off.

Also lots of warm blankets, because I really don't like the cold, and flashlights, candles, batteries and matches.

Also first aid kits and things like pain killers and other sanitary necessities.

In the Carrington event there were arcs off of the telegraph wires. There was very minimal electrical wiring run at that time in 1859.

Why does no one use their logic with that one fact? If a telegraph wire arced? Could everything that has wires or exposed wires arc?

How would anyone survive the initial visible electricity everywhere?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but has anyone done any thinking on that?

Last year I believe there were telephone poles arcing in TX. Imagine that everywhere. Fires. Burn the earth.

Sorry. Please think. Anyone know electrical well enough to explain whether or not much wiring would arc?

ok im not sure about this, but here's some good news if the poster is right

from camel
Depending on the power of the EMP pulse. I doubt everything will go out from a solar flare, the damage will be heavy on large installations that has lots of coils and wires the power can travel through but a LED flashlight and a car inside a garage with metal framing wil probably survive without any damage at all.

The EMP threat is a bit overrated, it isn't fun but it is not like everything will start to burn from it. If it was to hit the US I believe your sectioning of the power grids will save many of them. The energy won't be able to travel from state to state and the pulse would need to hit the whole continent. The big problem comes from the power of the pulse being able to travel in existing power lines and spreading that way. The pulse will however not be able to travel from Pennsylvania to Ohio and "jumping out" of the system to cause an EMP pulse there as well.

What about the over 100 nuclear plants in the US and the buildings housing their spent fuel rod pools?? What would happen to these facilities after an EMP??
If you live within (50 miles?) of one of these, shouldn't you be researching this topic if you're preparing?
Why do few prepping articles, blogs, etc. never mention this at all?? I would really like to know what the threat is here and if there is a realistic way to prepare if meltdown is a real threat.

Look, let's be realistic about the effects of an EMP.

An EMP may fry complex circuitry. It will NOT take out simple electronic devices, motors, basic circuits, etc. Not unless it's powerful enough to create an electrocution hazard in and of itself, in which case you're dead anyway.

An electric motor, AKA a generator, is pretty much metal and magnets. Do you think anything powerful enough to fuse copper together would be survivable in the first place? Anything short of that, there will still be plenty of means to generate power.

ok found some us military stuff if anyone is interested to read the pdf

The Army is studying methods of protecting sensitive
electronic equipment against electromagnetic pulse
(EMP) and radiofrequency interference (RFI) events.
Part of this work focuses on metal arc-spray techniques
as a potentially low-cost alternative to traditional
EMP/RFI protection. Arc-sprayed metal coatings have
been used for several years in different applications;
however, little is known about the physical and electrical
properties of these coatings. A better understanding of
these properties would allow spraying parameters to be
optimized, ensuring the most effective coating at the
lowest cost.

All you need to make a faraday cage is a box lined with common aluminum screening. Overlap the edges. Works well. Also can shield yourself from your smartmeter by placing a large piece of screen on the inside wall of the house where the meter is. Mine is opposite my master bedroom closet, so I just put a 5x8 foot piece of screen on the wall and tacked it up. Had the screening so might as well.

Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?

We all would most likely die, indigenous peoples like the Inca would survive, western modern civilization would be crushed back into the stone age.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Being a coastal dweller (yeah, not too smart eh?) I have my "Hurricane Kit". Extra fuel for the gas grill, generator, gasoline, wood for the fireplace and food stockpile. What worries me is the "Have Nots" will try to take from the "Haves". Though I'm a huge supporter of the 2nd amendment, I know I could never shoot anyone and don't own a firearm. Guess I would have to bug out...
