Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
In any mass outage there is a priority to bringing buildings/businesses back on. I'm sure federal agencies would be #1. Followed by hospitals, police/fire/ems, water treatment, then I would guess things like gas stations and the like. Anyone on one of those circuits would also possibly benefit. But once again just thinking about it they would probably cut residential power completely out at first. To save power for those places I've already mentioned.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
it is not the EMP that you have to worry about - it is WHO or WHAT causes it ... if it is a "bomb" dropped by someone - they aren't just going to drop it without a plan ... they wouldn't "bomb" the entire nation - that would senseless - but it they did it "right" it will leave them with total control over the "masses" because THEY will have enough technology in a "safe - place" to get them back "on line" (if they even go off-line) you can bet that their grid is hard wired.

If it is an "act of nature" (kill shot) then it wouldn't be localized, but turn out the lights around the world ... no "help" forth coming (like in the Nat Geo scenario)- no matter which - the people living in major Metro areas are doomed - of their own free will.

we built this nation before electricity - and ET technology - I believe we can (re)build it better - without our dependency upon it ... you can modify a bicycle and generate electricity and if it is simply an EMP and not a pole shift -
I trust that (collective) pockets of humanity will be able to deal with whatever issues that arise - and we'll do a much better job the next time.

I'll be fine! But I'm amazed at how stupid and unprepared the masses are. There's an emergency water shortgage notice over here for the Dublin area, because they've messed up the treatment centre or some shit. They've turned the water off during the night and told people to be careful how much they use. The radio had a phone-in and one girl said that she was scared she'd run out of water in the shower while she was washing her hair. Didn't occur to her not to use the shower but use the washbasin instead. Boy are they in for a surprise when TSHTF.
 Quoting: Tess2012

There was a vague threat of someone poisoning the water supply (lol not fucking kidding) here where I live, and they had to have the water supply shut off for 48 hours ... people cleared the water supply of all the nearby stores. Mind you, I live in a relatively small mountain town.

Imagine if this was NYC.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
What about the over 100 nuclear plants in the US and the buildings housing their spent fuel rod pools?? What would happen to these facilities after an EMP??
If you live within (50 miles?) of one of these, shouldn't you be researching this topic if you're preparing?
Why do few prepping articles, blogs, etc. never mention this at all?? I would really like to know what the threat is here and if there is a realistic way to prepare if meltdown is a real threat.
I have asked this question before and can't get an answer.

This would cause a mass extinction event. No amount of prepping would work. You better hope we dont lose electricity for these or we are all done.

what this documentary here says is that when the nuclear plants detect the electrical grid failure they automatically shut down

btw this is a great video posted here long ago but it talks on the sudden disappearance of humans

when humans disappear

 Quoting: Ostria1

Yes, I understand that the reactors themselves would automatically go into shutdown and they in themselves would not be the problem.
My understanding is that the problem would be with the buildings where the spent fuel rods are located. The spent fuel rods have to be kept submerged in approx 20 feet in cool constantly circulating water for at least 10 years before they can be removed from the water pools.
I had read that the systems that keep the water circulating through these pools is definitely tied into the electrical grid. If power is lost, they do have diesel generators, but if power is lost for a long enough time and diesel to run the generators goes scarce, then there is a major major problem. without the water circulating, the fuel rods which are extremely hot will boil dry the water and go into meltdown. This would be worse than a reactor meltdown.

This must have some truth to it if you read about what is going on at Fukushima as they have had to circulate ocean water through the fuel rod pools and they continue to be a threat.

Does anybody out there have enough knowledge on this to elaborate and confirm or debunk?? And would it be survivable??

Help! I have not read all the replies but can someone tell me what good a generator will do us if all electrics are fried? Did I miss something. I have one big solar panel, how do I protect it? Help please. If EMP fries everything, what good is a generator?
 Quoting: sandpiper

Any generator is only good as long as you have fuel for it -in a total EMP - there may not be any more fuel arriving to your area

Otherwise - you would need to keep the entire generator and ALL related house circuits protected which is VERY hard to accomplish.

After spending some time today reading articles on EMP and relative threads on GLP, I took a break and baked some

"What if all the electricity went off tomorrow, would you know what to do?"

It was Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith show talking to Opie and his friends.

It was from the episode called "Back to Nature".

I found it here and you can listen to him ask that question to the boys at about
3 minutes and 30 seconds into the show:

The religion of submission cannot survive an open and honest discussion of its convoluted and foolish scriptures, its sexually perverted terrorist prophet, or its deceitful and demented god. When Western leaders become unified and resolute in their hostility to Islam's violent and ungodly beginnings, Muslims will flee the religion because they will be horrified by its endorsement of terrorism, mass murder, slave trading, plunder, kidnapping, and rape.

If Muslims & their apologists really want to cure "Islamophobia," here is an easy way. Focus their indignation on Muslims committing violent acts in the name of Islam, not on non-Muslims reporting on those acts.

Well, thanks for the input anyway. I am trying to sort of get an idea of how to prepare for bad things happening. Even if not worse case, it is still supposed to be a severe winter coming so I want to at least be prepared for 2 weeks without power due to a severe snowstorm and then go from there.

I do live pretty much directly downwind from a Nuclear power plant although it's about 80 miles away, but the prevailing winds do generally come my way from that direction. If it is possible to prepare for that type of contingency, I'd like to try, but I'm not sure how. I have read what to do if there were ever to be an actual nuclear attack, but I believe this type of radiation would be different and probably a lot worse, but I really don't know. I will keep looking for any useful information on this. If I find anything, I will share.

Also, anything without a full-blown microprocessor will most likely be unaffected by an EMP.

Batteries, coil motors, basic circuits, physical connection breaking switches, alternators, and most AC/DC converters are simply not vulnerable to sudden surges while not in operation.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Yes, have EZ pump for well (if we need it). Have an entire old barn for wood, if we need it. Have wood burning stove, would have to hookup, but have it if we need it.
Food, well, enough for a awhile...after that...well, the blackbirds, crows, doves might start looking pretty good...I suppose last resort would be the horses......wouldn't take much to throw some chickens on the property, or round up our significant wild rabbit population, contain them, and let 'em breed. Already have raised gardens/seeds, canning stuff, etc.

Look if it gets that bad, eventually even with heat/water, we'll be in the same boat as everyone else. What we have will just buy time, that's about it.

I'm not really worried about lack of communications, people in our small town (walking distance, close knit town) will have ham radios and all congregate at the local bar...we'll get news. Our small town has so many knowledgeable people, plus my immediate family is jack of all trades...including the adult children...we'll make do for awhile.

We're covered for the basics, food for awhile, water, heat, transportation (horses/bike/foot) and my husband is a vet (not animal vet, military), he knows stuff, son is NG, he knows stuff...lots of family members that know lots of stuff and have lots of stuff, we'll help each other out.
We'll come together, we'll survive for awhile...after that, it's anybody's guess. Since we are in a high energy area, and high ag. output, I'm hoping, that as repairs are made, our area will be on a priority list...one can hope right?

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Our take (my DH and I) is that you need the basics:

1. Well for water, and hand pump.
2. Wood burning stove, and wood available, not try to find it last minute.
3. Food stored, or garden/seeds in place with fruit trees on property.
4. Maybe some meat on the hoof hanging around.
5. Protection, yes, that means guns and ammo.

Think how we survived back in the 1700's, early 1800's. They did it with wood burning stoves, outhouse, well or creek, livestock/garden on property, that is how they did it, we'll have to do the same, otherwise, no you won't last long.

And even if you have above, you need to be able to preserve from year to year, collect/dry seeds, take care of your animals, breed your animals, have access to more ammo, etc.

If a horrible EMP did happen, yeah, we'd all be in for a world of hurt, even those of us that have the basics, as truly we too are only buying some time to consider next moves and pray our harvest comes up, our animals don't get sick, we don't get sick...you know? It'll be like colonial times all over again...what's sad is, a lot of people nowadays don't even know how to cook from scratch, or build something, or hunt, or fish, or sew, or blacksmith, or well, do much of anything related to harsh survival, they weren't taught. They will die if someone doesn't protect/teach them.

Nut trees are also a good resource. Pecans have the highest protein. I have been planting fruit and nut trees on my property. Also, nuts preserve well when picked and stored in a dry and pest free container.

Focus their indignation on Muslims committing violent acts in the name of Islam, not on non-Muslims reporting on those acts.

we have enough food and water for a family of five for maybe 3-6 months ... , camp stoves , wood ,batteries , ham radio , lanterns , sleeping bags games and books ...then 7 bug out bags and warm coats and boots. but ok if the house catches on fire then not good we would be on the run- tent and sleeping bags in the Van . ( worried about fires if it happened ) . oh well I live in southern CA maybe a large tsunami will come and put the fires out ? ...lol

Apocalypse ( "lifting of the veil" or "revelation") is a disclosure of something hidden from the majority of mankind in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception, i.e. the veil to be lifted.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Suggest keeping LUGOLS IODINE on hand.

The iodine helps your body eliminate toxins stored in fat, especially bromine which may cause detox symptoms such as pimples and headaches.

Other detox symptoms may be fatigue, muscle aches, fever, diarrhea, and brain fog, and skin rashes.

Lugol's has been used to treat gout caused by high uric acid in the blood. The uric acid is deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues causing excruciating pain.

Lugols can be used topically on the skin for infection and sepsis. It can help open up blocked arteries, disinfect water, and cure bladder infections.

It has been shown to reduce or eliminate ovarian cysts, diminish unsightly keloids, loosen phlegm, and reduce or eliminate Peyronie’s Disease and Dupuytron’s contracture.

The benefits of iodine in the body are far reaching. Oddly enough, it is the least understood of all the essential trace elements.

This is the safest of all the essential trace elements which can be administered in large amounts when in an inorganic nonradioactive form.

Iodine is stored throughout your entire body - the skin, teeth, nails, all the organs, and bones.

When you have the correct amount of iodine in your body, you are able to:

•Maintain your energy level all day
•Maintain your weight
•Live without aches and pains
•Maintain a cheerful and uplifted attitude
•Have a clear memory
•Able to tolerate cold
•Have normal bowel movements;
•Have full and shiny hair; and
•Obtain restful night at sleep
•Have normal skin and supple fingernails

Just so you all know, while this video visually depicting the energy carried by power lines is impressive, it is nothing so out of the ordinary that it would be foreboding doom. I've seen it happen alot. Luckily never in the middle of iit (electrical burns are nasty and often fatal). Some people on that thread did a fair job explaining what happened. Some of the comments I read reminded me of some of my apprentices who know just enough to be dangerous.

Suggest keeping 2 Thessalonians 3:10
King James Version (KJV)

You may be detoxing from bromide and fluoride - this can cause some strange feelings. Once you detox you should be able to tolerate 2 drops every day.
