Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?

Who needs a EMP leave it to the Gas and Electric spuliers to tax and costus out of paying the bills.

The price of fuel in uk is astranomical so is gas and electric so you can keep your emp.

I was going to have my soon-to-be 9 year old do this as a project...it's something that would definitely be good to keep on hand: a solar oven. This is a simple one, there are other ones out there...

Humans have been at our current evolutionary level for at least 50,000 years.

Up to just 100 years ago, the norm was a family-run no-utilities self-sufficient homestead that got everything it needed locally.

Have we really slid so far?

I'm a well urbanized animal. If I can ride out the initial die-offs or round-ups or whatever, and assuming whatever gets everyone else doesn't get me too, I can easily live on the junk and remains of a city. Hell, there must be thousands of solar garden lanterns stuck in lawns within a 5 minute walk of me. One car battery and an AC converter, I have power back. Hell, three alternators and a source of running water, say dropping a water wheel in the storm sewer, I have power again.

Solar panel + 12v pump + tubes + bucket = self-powered hydroponic bed. Dig a hole in the ground, line with hay or dead grass or old insulation or anything at all, place sheet of glass on top, greenhouse.

If our relatives 2 or 3 generations back had our amount of useful crap kicking around and going to waste (and knew how to use it), they would have used it to supplement their already self-sufficient homesteads and would practically be living in utopia.

Hell, if I had the free time and ability to scavenge scrap crap that nobody will care about post-doom, I'll be fine.

If I share this knowledge with others and help them do the same, I can participate in restarting civilization. That my simian life should have such relevance in this age of pointlessness would be an honor.

Well, it's obvious life as we know it would cease to exist. It would be like a jump back to the 19th century, so inmediate adaptation should be key to survival.

Some years ago on internet there was an article about an huge diesel generator used for a town/city somewhere in US.
There was a picture or illustration, i dont remember, but the the size of it was like an apartment complex.

I AM TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT SOLAR FLARES AND THE POSSIBILITY OF EMP... EITHER FROM THE SUN, NUCLEAR OR OTHER SOURCE.

There hasn't been a solar flare large enough since 1859. The largest one we've seen since data collection began has been an X45, the Halloween Storms of 2003, where Sunspot 488 and 486, both black and beautiful!!... kept punching out X flares for 2 weeks. Haven't seen anything since. Whats happened over the past week is NOTHING compared to 2003 and 2001. But life goes on. All the flares did was knock me out for a few hours.. I felt very tired around 5pm and was out like a light until 8pm.

As for nuclear or other source, an EMP, ain't nutting you can do about that. It is up to FATE/DESTINY. I don't see New Yorkers running for the hills or to buy a farm to learn how SELF-SUSTAINABILITY. Ain't gonna happen we are too dependent as a people on government and infrastructures.

Growing food

Of primary concern are:
Water - Fuel - Food - Shelter - Community defense - Sanitation and general health - Medical is last because you won't last long enough to need it.

I choose to be proactive. Nothing wrong with planning for possible events. WHile planning for a EMP you also prepare for other events such as a economic collapse,natural disaster, etc.

Well, I have some solar power, enough to run my freezer and lights, radio etc.

I can't find any reliable information on how EMPS's affect solar panels though. I know that there is a diode that I may need to replace, maybe. And it may fry the charge controller. A project on the board for me is to make a faraday cage for the controller and inverter. I have the stuff, I just need to do it.

In the reading I have done, not everything will be fried. . I've read that some areas, depending on their cover, will be shaded. Think of a car under a carport.

I'm looking to build a home at some point. One room will be shielded in aluminum screening, then sheetrocked. This room will house all solar components and the freezer, and serve as storage for other electronics.

What about the over 100 nuclear plants in the US and the buildings housing their spent fuel rod pools?? What would happen to these facilities after an EMP??
If you live within (50 miles?) of one of these, shouldn't you be researching this topic if you're preparing?
Why do few prepping articles, blogs, etc. never mention this at all?? I would really like to know what the threat is here and if there is a realistic way to prepare if meltdown is a real threat.

Lugols is actually one of my storage items, among some other "alternative" health items, like 23ppm silver gel. I can personally attest to the power of silver. IT healed a severe infection on my arm a few years ago when antibiotics were failing.

In the Carrington event there were arcs off of the telegraph wires. There was very minimal electrical wiring run at that time in 1859.

Why does no one use their logic with that one fact? If a telegraph wire arced? Could everything that has wires or exposed wires arc?

How would anyone survive the initial visible electricity everywhere?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but has anyone done any thinking on that?

Last year I believe there were telephone poles arcing in TX. Imagine that everywhere. Fires. Burn the earth.
