I'm sorry I don't post often and I'm bad with quoting, but anyway we have to remember that in the scenario we are talking about, the large distribution transformers would be damaged. Those take between 2 and 5 years for delivery from overseas. The first thing needed is juice from the plants. Then transformers to make it usable

You said the Obama adm. Is doing nothing...but every time that he propose the plan to rebuild infrastructure , the negative of congress is present. Have the facts straight.

OK, now who and when did someone say on this post Obama was doing nothing? He is destroying the health care industry as you post. He is reoving our liberties one by one, day by day. He is doing plenty!

The post states the "Federal Government" is doing nothing. Please read before you post.

As far as rural America goes, I believe it would be easier to get along there than in a city. But, it would take far longer to get those areas back online. Of course that is purely my educated guess.

Affirmative action obongo is a commief*ckwit hell bent on the destruction of the US, economy and its infrastructure. If not for the safeguards he'd EMP the US himself and be done with it, hand it over to the commies. Fire enough US generals and even that may be workable.

Slowin' down... We need to double up on the doom here.
All the US nuke plants will run out of battery and diesel for cooling pumps pretty quick. The diesels are all modern electronic control types so they may not even start. Storage pools with 1000's of tons of fuel rods will start cooking off and we'll have Fuku bonfires/explosions all over the US, Fuku will not be brought online because of that... ever. Something 'One Second After' glossed over in it's 'local eye view' style. AC611 may not have any juice to route even if he fixed all the blown circuits.

I will survive. Simple, find brick building with a basement, water supply, ina good location. Then I will murder any person who stands between me and my children eating. Live as long as we can. Don't cross me I will gladly saw off someones head for a can of peaches, I'd do that shit right now, imagine during a EMP. LOL

Nuclear plants are a whole different world. We all probably share the same amount of knowledge about them. I've seen that show where they say they begin auto shut down when they experience failure. Who knows if it's true. I know I wouldn't want to be anywhere near or downwind of one.

Every nuclear reactor in the affected area would go into meltdown, so it's actually a pointless topic.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Humans have been at our current evolutionary level for at least 50,000 years.

Up to just 100 years ago, the norm was a family-run no-utilities self-sufficient homestead that got everything it needed locally.

Have we really slid so far?

I'm a well urbanized animal. If I can ride out the initial die-offs or round-ups or whatever, and assuming whatever gets everyone else doesn't get me too, I can easily live on the junk and remains of a city. Hell, there must be thousands of solar garden lanterns stuck in lawns within a 5 minute walk of me. One car battery and an AC converter, I have power back. Hell, three alternators and a source of running water, say dropping a water wheel in the storm sewer, I have power again.

Solar panel + 12v pump + tubes + bucket = self-powered hydroponic bed. Dig a hole in the ground, line with hay or dead grass or old insulation or anything at all, place sheet of glass on top, greenhouse.

If our relatives 2 or 3 generations back had our amount of useful crap kicking around and going to waste (and knew how to use it), they would have used it to supplement their already self-sufficient homesteads and would practically be living in utopia.

Hell, if I had the free time and ability to scavenge scrap crap that nobody will care about post-doom, I'll be fine.

If I share this knowledge with others and help them do the same, I can participate in restarting civilization. That my simian life should have such relevance in this age of pointlessness would be an honor.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48476302

Funny you should mention how we were pretty much the same for centuries then in the last 100 years everything's changed out of all recognition. How does anyone explain this sudden jump in technology; it wasn't gradual.

Help! I have not read all the replies but can someone tell me what good a generator will do us if all electrics are fried? Did I miss something. I have one big solar panel, how do I protect it? Help please. If EMP fries everything, what good is a generator?

Any generator is only good as long as you have fuel for it -in a total EMP - there may not be any more fuel arriving to your area

Otherwise - you would need to keep the entire generator and ALL related house circuits protected which is VERY hard to accomplish.

A generator should have heavy wiring and 'work' after the EMP. The problem is the motor turning it and it's electronics. There are old motor/generator that don't have electronics.

btw sandpiper, What are you going to do with the generator electric after the EMP?

Actually, very little military equipment is "hardened" against EMP. This doesn't seem to be a priority for the current regime. I suspect they made sure that equipment to support their worthless asses is ready, and the rest of us are fucked. Don't count on the government to help you after any emergency, you could end up on a bridge without food or water. Or, maybe in the superbowl stadium with all the murderers and rapists.

In my mind, our X factor is our offshore nuclear vessels. I would imagine some of them would serve as our new temporary power plants. Thinking along those lines, I think we could get limited power up relatively quickly. With a little luck there would at least be a few hundred surviving transformers. In that case it may be possible to keep mass outages under a few months.

Pretty good 'out of the box' thinking there AC611 :)
Govt agencies, municipalities would hog it all so none left for the common man.
But then we'd be to busy defending against radioactive cannibals to worry too much about it. And you'd need a defense rifle team every time you went out on a 'Post EMP' repair trip. Like Liam Neeson in 'The Grey"

I'm well located. We'd band together up here. Martial law would be declared and the seat of government would be Fairchild AFB nearby. I've heard some talk that the resort here in town has hardened electrical backup systems. I'm certain that generators in the silver mines would survive the EMP.

98% white and 250 miles from the nearest population center. That takes away a lot of worries.
