Sleep? An EMP event can happen from a attack from Russia, China, N. Korea etc as well as from a Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun. Who is asleep? Perhaps it is YOU!

If it's from the sun then better hope it happens in the winter when the sun angle is much lower. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets all the fun n games.

Experts: Civilians not ready for EMP-caused blackout

The catastrophic effects of an electromagnetic pulse-caused blackout could be preventable, but experts warn the civilian world is still not ready.

Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the technology to avoid disaster from electromagnetic pulses exists, and upgrading the nation’s electrical grid is financially viable.

“The problem is not the technology,” Pry said. “We know how to protect against it. It’s not the money, it doesn’t cost that much. The problem is the politics. It always seems to be the politics that gets in the way.”

Experts on Capitol Hill Thursday warned that an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack aimed at the nation’s electrical grid could leave the majority of Americans dead.

The hearing, “Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP): Threat to Critical Infrastructure,” before the House Homeland Security Committee’s Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies explored the effects an EMP would have.

“Some would say it’s low probability, but the damage that could be caused in the event of an EMP attack, both by the sun, a solar event, or a man-made attack, would be catastrophic,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R., Texas). “We talk a lot about a nuclear bomb in Manhattan, and cybersecurity threat to the power grid in the Northeast, and all of these things would actually probably pale in comparison to the devastation that an EMP attack could perpetrate on Americans.”

Solar flare almost blasted Earth back to the dark ages two years ago, NASA scientists reveal

Plasma cloud or 'CME' rocketed away from the sun as fast as 3000 km/s on July 23, 2012

Had the eruption occurred just one week earlier, the blast site would have been facing Earth

Direct hit could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling everything that plugs into a wall socket.

Total economic impact could have exceeded $2 trillion or 20 times greater than the costs of a Hurricane Katrina

Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer has issued an unusual warning for investors, calling the threat of a widespread blackout from an electromagnetic surge the "most significant danger" in the world.

Called an "electromagnetic pulse" or EMP, the events can occur naturally from solar storms or artificially from a high-altitude explosion of nuclear weapons.

Got a bug-out with a wood stove and a running stream. Not my preferred bug-out, which is on a river chock full of Chinook and fifty miles from anywhere, but it will do in a pinch.

I live in the Redoubt (North Idaho). From what I've gathered talking to some locals who worked on them, some local dams could be tweaked to provide a local power grid. This might take a while, though. We also have silver mines containing generators which would be shielded from EMP. This would provide only a limited source of power, since fuel for the generators would be scarce.

Got a couple weeks food, and the ability to get more, up in the woods. A network of old boy friends who I've talked to about this. We'd pitch in together. The best plus is we are not very DIE-verse up here. The nearest large batch of handout crowd marauders is quite far off...

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Humans have been at our current evolutionary level for at least 50,000 years.

Up to just 100 years ago, the norm was a family-run no-utilities self-sufficient homestead that got everything it needed locally.

Have we really slid so far?

I'm a well urbanized animal. If I can ride out the initial die-offs or round-ups or whatever, and assuming whatever gets everyone else doesn't get me too, I can easily live on the junk and remains of a city. Hell, there must be thousands of solar garden lanterns stuck in lawns within a 5 minute walk of me. One car battery and an AC converter, I have power back. Hell, three alternators and a source of running water, say dropping a water wheel in the storm sewer, I have power again.

Solar panel + 12v pump + tubes + bucket = self-powered hydroponic bed. Dig a hole in the ground, line with hay or dead grass or old insulation or anything at all, place sheet of glass on top, greenhouse.

If our relatives 2 or 3 generations back had our amount of useful crap kicking around and going to waste (and knew how to use it), they would have used it to supplement their already self-sufficient homesteads and would practically be living in utopia.

Hell, if I had the free time and ability to scavenge scrap crap that nobody will care about post-doom, I'll be fine.

If I share this knowledge with others and help them do the same, I can participate in restarting civilization. That my simian life should have such relevance in this age of pointlessness would be an honor.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48476302

I always smile at the inventiveness of folks with a 'junk-pile' in the back yard, which is just about everyone living outside the city limits up here, or in any small town. They'll rummage around the junk pile and jerry-rig just about any broke down piece of equipment.

Last winter, I was up in a little mountain town and a buddy's wife's car got frozen in due to an ice storm/snow plow combo. He stopped by to borrow a long chunk of old sewer line I'd dug up and replaced, but kept in case of something. He used a brush torch through the pipe in order to melt the ice off the car without setting the actual vehicle on fire.

speaking of this topic, i just ran across this show from nat-geo that was out last year on the blackout subject...

while i think there are underlying tones about what people should do, its good to watch because it might make you think of things you forgot to prep for.

it appears the producers are trying to steer sheep in a certain direction with this show, i.e. would be that the prepper family might be more at risk but i think any such family would also be more well prepared to defend.

also, all the inner city sheep seemed to be "ok" by just waiting it out for uncle sugar to come to the rescue.

i also felt the 8 day duration was a bit short and chaos would more more pronounced by day 2 or 3 given a total shutdown.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Our Earth is fighting a daily battle, shielding us and our life-giving technology from the electromagnetic ravages of the sun. Every 100 years or so, we are hit by an epic solar storm which could devastate our world’s electrical-based society were it to strike today.

It happened last in 1859, when we had little technology… over 150 years ago. We are past due!

“Any day now we will be hit with a solar storm that will return us back to the Stone Age!”
- Noted astrophysicist, Dr. Carrington Reid

What would life look like for you and your family if this happened?

Consider the following…

-There would be no heat for your home.(Other than fire place - and your generator needs fuel that may not be available for long)

-Water would no longer be pumped into most homes.

-Your computer would not work.

-There would be no Internet.

-Your phones would not work.

-There would be no television.

-There would be no radio.

-ATM machines would be shut down.

-There would be no banking.

-Your debit cards and credit cards would not work.

-Without electricity, gas stations would not be functioning.

-Most people would be unable to do their jobs without electricity and employment would collapse.

-Commerce would be brought to a standstill.

-Hospitals would not be able to function.

-You would quickly start running out of medicine.

-All refrigeration would shut down and frozen foods in our homes and supermarkets would start to go bad.

-Some vehicles would no longer be able to start at all.

-Traffic lights would no longer be working.

-Airplanes would not be able to go anywhere.

-Wall Street would not be able to function at all.

-Government services would collapse.

A lot of these effects would start to be felt immediately. An article by Mac Slavo detailed some of the things that we could expect to see in the immediate aftermath of a massive EMP blast…

The first 24 – 48 hours after such an occurrence will lead to confusion among the general population as traditional news acquisition sources like television, radio and cell phone networks will be non-functional.

Within a matter of days, once people realize the power might not be coming back on and grocery store shelves start emptying, the entire system will begin to delve into chaos.

Within 30 days a mass die off will have begun as food supplies dwindle, looters and gangs turn to violent extremes, medicine can’t be restocked and water pump stations fail.

[link to www.shtfplan.com]

So what is the federal government doing to protect us against such a horrific disaster?

Absolutely nothing.

In fact, according to a recent WND article, ex-CIA Director Michael Hayden says that the Obama administration has no plans to defend us against an EMP blast…

Contrary to the findings of a 2008 commission mandated by Congress to consider a defense against an electromagnetic pulse attack and its effects on the national grid, a retired Air Force general who also headed the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency says that there isn’t a solution to an EMP attack.

Speaking before the Bipartisan Policy Center at a conference on the threats to the U.S. electrical grid, Michael Hayden also said the Obama administration has no plan to defend against an EMP.
In fact, Hayden says that “there really aren’t any solutions” to this problem…

“I don’t mean to be so flippant, but there really aren’t any solutions to this, so I would just leave it at that,” Hayden said.

[link to www.wnd.com]

Of course that is a complete and total lie. It would take less than a billion dollars to protect the largest transformers in our electrical grid. But the Obama administration refuses to do it.

Since the Obama administration is doing nothing, some state government officials are now considering taking action…

At the National Council of State Legislatures last week in Atlanta, a number of lawmakers said they’re preparing legislation similar to a bill introduced in Maine recently did under the leadership of Rep. Andrea Boland.

Efforts are under way to press the membership of the NCSL to address the EMP issue, since the federal government has failed to take action to mitigate the potential for a catastrophic event, whether natural or man-made. An EMP event could knock out the U.S. electrical grid system and the critical infrastructures that rely on it.

Along with the national electrical grid, other critical infrastructures include telecommunications, banking and financial transactions, oil and natural gas pipelines, transportation, food and water delivery, emergency services and space systems.

In short, an EMP event could cause the collapse of society.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
If you had an EMP, you would go back to the 1800's for a few years. Today no one has the skills people had back then.

How many people know how to plant and maintain a garden?
How many people know how to can?
How many people know how to hunt?
How many people know how to spin yarn and sew?
How many people can make candles or soap?

You can add lots of stuff to this list. We would be so screwed.
 Quoting: indiandave

Yes to all, with equipment gathered through the years.

Those of us who know would end up teaching those who don't. I offered to teach the lady next door to can. They are going to garden next summer .... if there is a next summer.

I would suggest:

>>How many people know how to plant and maintain a garden?
For beginners: Buy basic veggie seeds now, they are often on sale and they will still be good next year. Do not buy hybrids. If you can till your ground for next year, do it now, amend it as best you can and cover it with black plastic or cheap tarps weighted down so it will be more or less ready in the spring.

>>> How many people know how to can?
For beginners: Buy your canner now, plus jars and lids and rims. There would be a run on them if time got tough. If you can afford it, get a pressure canner (not cooker) too for some veggies and esp for meat. Sometimes you can get jars at garage sales. Mayonaise jars are not good for canning. How many? There are 52 weeks in one year. If you buy 5 dozen jars (60), you will have one jar a week for a year + some left over. If you buy 10 dozen jars (120) you will have 2 jars a week + a few left over, and so on. You may not need to eat out of jars in the summer, but figure at least 7 months (about 28 weeks) you will be eating canned food if you live in a temperate climate. Consider a dehydrator and a winter garden and storing root crops through the winter.

>>> How many people know how to hunt?
I'm not good enough at it to answer this one.

>>> How many people know how to spin yarn and sew?
For beginners: It is not cost effective to learn to spin at this time. Buy yarn at the Salvation Army and learn to crochet or knit. Buy warm clothes, afghans and blankets at garage sales, wash and store them. Buy ahead for kids. If you can afford it, get a treadle machine; locate needles for it on Ebay or somewhere on the net before you buy it. Learn to use it.

>>> How many people can make candles or soap?
For beginners: Buy up dirt cheap candles at Salvation Army or garage sales. Buy wick at Joann or the net. You can pour candles in disposable cups. You need to anchor the wick before you pour the wax from the old candles. Melt them in a pan that is put in a pan of hot water, like a double boiler. Wax will catch fire if you get it on a burner or gas flame. Have baking soda ready to smother flame in case of fire.

For soap you have to have lye. You will probably not be able to buy it easily. Get it from a dedicated soap making supply place or off the net. Some hardware stores still sell it. It is very caustic, you can burn yourself badly on it. Send kids to the babysitter when you make soap. Use rubber gloves. Have water ready in case you get some on you. Buy enough lye to last a while. Get a book to tell you how to make soap and follow it. You will need grease, fat, or oil. I suggest some cheap vegetable oil to start with. Practice first, before things get bad.

I'll be fine! But I'm amazed at how stupid and unprepared the masses are. There's an emergency water shortgage notice over here for the Dublin area, because they've messed up the treatment centre or some shit. They've turned the water off during the night and told people to be careful how much they use. The radio had a phone-in and one girl said that she was scared she'd run out of water in the shower while she was washing her hair. Didn't occur to her not to use the shower but use the washbasin instead. Boy are they in for a surprise when TSHTF.
