Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Often wondered what I would do, but it's probably no need to worry. If my life up to this point is any indication, a way to survive will present itself. Understanding how the people around me will probably act, knowing the geography of this region fairly well...knowing how to obtain food when most people would throw their hands up in the air...these things come naturally now. We'll see if the time comes how long I can survive. For now, just the basic items in the BOB, nothing fancy. The situation will dictate what gets added, if necessary or possible.
Experiences from the past will definitely serve in a dire situation. Unless of course, I'm 'rounded up' for some reason and I can't escape. That might change things a bit.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
If you had an EMP, you would go back to the 1800's for a few years. Today no one has the skills people had back then.

How many people know how to plant and maintain a garden?
How many people know how to can?
How many people know how to hunt?
How many people know how to spin yarn and sew?
How many people can make candles or soap?

You can add lots of stuff to this list. We would be so screwed.
 Quoting: indiandave

Yes to all, with equipment gathered through the years.

Those of us who know would end up teaching those who don't. I offered to teach the lady next door to can. They are going to garden next summer .... if there is a next summer.

I would suggest:

>>How many people know how to plant and maintain a garden?
For beginners: Buy basic veggie seeds now, they are often on sale and they will still be good next year. Do not buy hybrids. If you can till your ground for next year, do it now, amend it as best you can and cover it with black plastic or cheap tarps weighted down so it will be more or less ready in the spring.

>>> How many people know how to can?
For beginners: Buy your canner now, plus jars and lids and rims. There would be a run on them if time got tough. If you can afford it, get a pressure canner (not cooker) too for some veggies and esp for meat. Sometimes you can get jars at garage sales. Mayonaise jars are not good for canning. How many? There are 52 weeks in one year. If you buy 5 dozen jars (60), you will have one jar a week for a year + some left over. If you buy 10 dozen jars (120) you will have 2 jars a week + a few left over, and so on. You may not need to eat out of jars in the summer, but figure at least 7 months (about 28 weeks) you will be eating canned food if you live in a temperate climate. Consider a dehydrator and a winter garden and storing root crops through the winter.

>>> How many people know how to hunt?
I'm not good enough at it to answer this one.

>>> How many people know how to spin yarn and sew?
For beginners: It is not cost effective to learn to spin at this time. Buy yarn at the Salvation Army and learn to crochet or knit. Buy warm clothes, afghans and blankets at garage sales, wash and store them. Buy ahead for kids. If you can afford it, get a treadle machine; locate needles for it on Ebay or somewhere on the net before you buy it. Learn to use it.

>>> How many people can make candles or soap?
For beginners: Buy up dirt cheap candles at Salvation Army or garage sales. Buy wick at Joann or the net. You can pour candles in disposable cups. You need to anchor the wick before you pour the wax from the old candles. Melt them in a pan that is put in a pan of hot water, like a double boiler. Wax will catch fire if you get it on a burner or gas flame. Have baking soda ready to smother flame in case of fire.

For soap you have to have lye. You will probably not be able to buy it easily. Get it from a dedicated soap making supply place or off the net. Some hardware stores still sell it. It is very caustic, you can burn yourself badly on it. Send kids to the babysitter when you make soap. Use rubber gloves. Have water ready in case you get some on you. Buy enough lye to last a while. Get a book to tell you how to make soap and follow it. You will need grease, fat, or oil. I suggest some cheap vegetable oil to start with. Practice first, before things get bad.

You are so right. I'd like to add though I've been trying to tell friends and family, it's not going to be what you have, but what you know.

Make hard paper copies of how to do things. Everything from stitching a wound to butchering meat, tanning hides (did you know every animal has just enough brain tissue to tan their own hides?) How to make yarn, tap trees for syrup, make diesel fuel.

To make lye you can filter water through wood ashes. You can collect yeast spores for bread from the air. There's just all sorts of really neat things you can do for yourself and it's some fascinating stuff.

Kinda hard to plan when you have no idea of what may really happen. With all the expected 'doom' in our future, it's anybody's guess how it's going to go down. I just try to keep my eyes open, and go with it. The other thing is, who knows where you'll be when and if something horrible happens? I think about that as well. Some plans are only based on you being in the right place at the right time.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
The thing about an EMP is the size of the device that could knock out the grid is really quite small and could go undetected by radar until it's too late. And launching it high enough is a fairly simple task, that any one of hundreds of nations could accomplish it.

This is such an underreported threat that people think it must not be that serious. I think in "62 the Starfish Prime test over Hawaii knocked out the grid in a 600 mile radius and if I remember correctly the rocket was only about 9 ft long.

I do not think a terrorist created EMP via a plane could get enough altitude to create
a sufficient enough burst to cover the entire USA, but even partial would scew us all.

The thought brings up movies like "9 Meals away from Anarchy" on Youtube and other
that I forget the name, female and man trapped in condo tower during a power outage
and over time all hell breaks loose, looting, fights, rape etc, movie name stumps
me but you know the end results, not good.

I have a bugout bags, boxes of supplies etc, and safe place well North of the city

A nuclear weapon would be detonated in orbit “in order to destroy much of the electric grid from above the US with a single explosion,” he told lawmakers last week. “Two thirds of the US population would likely perish from starvation, disease, and societal breakdown. Other experts estimate the likely loss to be closer to 90 percent.”

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
This is such a fantastic and useful post! Thank you for all the info!
One subject someone might have touched on a bit, indirectly, I believe, needs more expansion and that is..psychological survival.

You can have all the best gear in the world and know how to use it but if you suddenly discover that part of your family has been decimated by the aftermath of an EMP or whatever has happened, everything you know and care about is gone, and the world will never be what it was, some of us would adjust one way or the other but some would find it so difficult that they can't think straight for two seconds in a row let alone do what's necessary to survive. They go into shock and never come out.

Any tips on how to prepare to survive psychologically/emotionally?
Thanks for any info you can give. :-)

First thing, get out of the city. If necessary, I'd go deep into the woods and live like the Native Americans did, except I'd have a nice fishing pole, rifle, bow and arrow, and ammo. I could survive, it would suck, but I could. The only problem though would be finding access to clean water, and not getting sick. Some basic medical supplies would be needed, disinfection, bandages, etc. Also, avoiding the mobs of cannibals and other hordes of crazy people might be a problem. I would get in touch with nature and learn to speak with the bears, and they would protect me, as long as I brought them fresh fish to eat.

Haven't made it thru the whole thread but it's really worth thi8nking about...I would venture to guess most folks here are the type who have at least *some* supplies stocked. Then again, it's a small percentage of that population who would be prepared for the all out downfall of western civilization as we know it.

BUT it's a guarantee sometime in our lifetimes I believe....if it ain't the EMP, it will be something equally catastrophic and it could be either man made or mother nature at this point all bets are off. We are overdue for so many disasters I've lost count.

That said, I am woefully unprepared for the slightest hiccup...and cashflow for prepping is little to nothing. Hope it holds off for a little while yet...

I agree. More than once I've been stuck on Baltimore/DC highways, pondering those stone and metal 'sound barriers' that line many miles of roadway. Can you imagine being on such a stretch, with no way to filter into the surrounding neighborhoods or towns? (those doors in the walls are always locked). Sometimes you have to walk a very long way, just to get to an overpass or some break in the walls.
I can only hope that I don't get stuck in that situation.

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
The EMP question comes up a lot for me because of what I do. My company manufactures hard-use gear, and one of our main product lines is the JuiceBox. Imagine a complete alt-energy system in an ammo can. The JuiceBox R2 even has a 28 watt solar panel inside.

The ammo can is composed of lapped, welded seams, and the internal components are electrically isolated from the exterior steel.

I firmly believe that our JuiceBox is the closest you can come to an over-the-counter system that will be EMP resistant. Despite this, our website makes no claims regarding EMP. This is because the variables are too great, and the unknowns too broad. A JuiceBox might survive intact, or it might not.

That said, if I somehow knew that an EMP was coming, I would immediately throw the main breaker that connects our home to the grid. I believe this is the simplest, fastest, most effective thing you can do. Other than that? Get ready to work really hard just to survive. Even if you are prepped.

The plus side? You will sleep great, because you will have earned your rest...

Great thread! The American Blackout movie didn't even touch on any of this stuff, and if an EMP attack happened during the fall going into winter...or winter itself...can you imagine the casualties that would result just from not having heat alone?

I thought most vehicles would not be able to operate, so just remember, those that have a bugout location wouldn't be able to get to it unless by foot!

I have not read the book, but my husband has it upstairs so guess I should some time....One Second After.
 Quoting: Laura Bow

I read ONE SECOND AFTER and I recommend it to everyone. There are things not in it - but it is as complete as any in print.

And - According to "Surviving the Financial Collapse" by Agguillere (sp)from Argentina.

When the FINANCIAL COLLAPSE happens - THE POWER GOES OUT!

It did in Argentina in 2001-2. Not enough unpaid employees to keep the grid up. So - get One Second After.

Forward by Newt Gingrich which I never said anything good about - but he brought this issue to Congress in the late 90's after reading the book and wanted the American people protected by stockpiling transformers and parts that would take two YEARS to get from China. And they probably have ALL the preps for the elites. They probably stocked all the extra parts for transformers for themselves and there were none left.

According to the book scenario - after 1 year without power 90% of the population will be dead. And it gives details, details, details, that are believable as to how and why this will happen. No water, sanitation, fuel, food, healthcare.

Read it aloud as we did and discuss some strategies that will be needed. Get new skills now.

There are numerous youtubes for:
Rocket mass heaters (super efficient space heating)
Rocket stoves (use 90% less fuel-heat n cook with a few sticks)
Bucket toilets (not stinky- RX book "Humanure")
Water storage
Growing food

Of primary concern are:
Water - Fuel - Food - Shelter - Community defense - Sanitation and general health - Medical is last because you won't last long enough to need it.

Love that Teslonian guy, what a brain! Even if he isn't right on because of lack of tech knowledge, he's got it fixed by the next video. Also, Green Power Science guy is great. He has a series on Fresnel Lenses which I think have to be the way to go for solar heat and cooking.

it'd be messy, definitely, but it's not the end of the world. perhaps it's what we need, as the way to survive would be to work together, to co-operate, rather than compete.

In times of trouble, I ask myself, "What would Sarah Conner do?"

Re: Are you prepared for a EMP? How would you survive?
Imagining and playing out the entire is kind of terrifying, especially if you live in a major city. Just for starts. Your power goes out, and you think aww, just an outage. You find a flashlight but it doesn't work. You might think the batteries are dead. You grab your smartphone and see who else lost power. Phone is dead.

You go outside and see other people standing outside, scratching their heads. You go to your car but it won't start. Every car on all the highways are disabled. People get out of their cars, walk out of their workplaces, homes, and the mass exodus and chaos begins. It would be quite a cluster fuck of madness.
