Obstructions to Video Mobile Sharing on the Rise

hey everyone :) it's been awhile.
how are you all doing?

for this winter to keep myself creative goal to keep me from going insane completely or something i am forcing myself to make 1 video "anagram" a day no matter what (although now i am 3 days behind *ahem*)
so far i've made 17. i make them all on my ipod from shooting , editing to uploading. i'm trying to see what works and what doesn't because i want to try to make a movie all on an ipod because i like things to be simple and the thought of doing tiny sized films that are made for the mobile amuses me.

so...i've downloaded a gazillion video apps and i am combining them and seeing what crashes and what doesn't and what sucks and what i like. no matter how cheesy the effect i just go with it and see what i can do with it. it's been pretty fun.

i upload them all to vimeo as i make them but youtube has to be all "we can't encode your apple thing" and it's on like donkey kong in the neverending fight over supremacy...google or apple. gog or magog.

so rather than take every single "anagram" i made and make it be windows media i just stuck a bunch of them together and converted them in batches. and this is my first batch.

it cracked me up how random it turned out so i thought i would show you all here what i've been up to for your viewing pleasure or displeasure.

ya, that's my voice talking on there. and yes, i have a minnesota accent bigtime.

i'm not trying to "say" anything with this. this is just me having fun and playing with apps to get to know them. if anyone has any apps they would like to suggest to me i would love to know more. i'm always on the lookout.

ok, here is the conspiracy part:

have you noticed how HARD it is becoming to share video online now especially on the mobile??
like, i uploaded a video to youtube on my ipod and then after it completed i was told that i could not view my own video on the device i had uploaded it from.
seriously.

i see this more and more all the time. i am being blocked on youtube from watching stuff on the mobile. it'll say add to playlist so you can watch from a desktop computer later.
it was explained to me this had something to do with ads and them making money but right, i'm not buying it.

especially when i cannnot even view my own 1 minute video i just uploaded ON THE MOBILE. STUPID.

then there is the whole "oh it's the war on flash" thing and "flash sucks". well maybe so. but hey i used to be able to watch videos and now i can't. it's 2013. hello? we are supposed to be moving forward with this intranebz thing and all i see is it going backwards. plus it's getting slower. anyone notice how the net has slowed down?

this is purposeful, imo, because they do not want people sharing video instantly because then people could share stuff like NEWS before it got a spin put on it.
someone could start their own internet video news station and it could be instant and it has been a bit like that but they are putting the clamp down now.

i keep mentioning this to people and no one seems to be too upset about it. but i can say this much for certain, whenever communication is being purposefully SLOWED DOWN or made to be more DIFFICULT that is never a good sign.

but i can see where this is heading and it's pissing me off.
i am noticing more than most people maybe because i am making these video anagrams and trying to get them out there only to come up to roadblock after roadblock to sharing videos made solely on the go for people on the go.

also now when i share videos i will see "some people may not be able to view this because of it's privacy settings"

it's meaning the videos privacy settings. not that the video is private. it's public. but SOMEONE cannot see it, but who i do not know. who is setting these privacy settings for public videos and who is not being able to view them?

i would love to know.

so far it's just under the radar enough so that no one is getting bothered by this. but mark my words, this is going into very bad territory and they are chipping away at everyone's ability to share video made on the go on a mobile device with others. it pisses me off.

that is all for now.

over and out,

pinkcat

There's no conspiracy here. It's current technology. You can't upload a video from mobile and view it instantly because it has to be downsized for mobile view. It has to propagate between databases and distribution servers. These things take time.

I uploaded a 1:30 video of one of my kids playing with the dog for family members to see. It came off the camera (HD) at 45mb. That's a lot of data.

The advances in tech in just the last 10 years astound me. We're still not to universally instantaneous sharing.

edited to fix prepositions for clarity

uh, nope.
that is not what is happening.

plus i am not talking about it being instantaneous.
i'm talking about being blocked from viewing it at ALL on a mobile device. no matter how long you wait.

Proof? That's exactly what's happening when you upload a video to YouTube or Vimeo. It's immediately resized (to several different sizes), and distributed across several databases and servers so it can be concurrently accessed by a number of viewers.

You think that should be instamagical?

As far as the "some users might not be able to view" message, either the videos have additional privacy settings such as country OR it's a bug that's on the bottom of the criticality list for a team of developers somewhere.

Sorry, you were editing while I was posting. hf

I've seen a number of tutorials to fix this. Particularly YouTube has some weird privacy/copyright restrictions for mobile viewing because of how easy it is to pirate videos via cells.

i'd really love to see these tutorials.

maybe they mean it's easy to pirate/copy/share via mobile.
and yep. that'll keep a lid on news making it out if they can do anything to slow you down or make it more difficult.

i've been on the internet since 1995 and i've completely seen a decline in our ability to communicate online in the last few years.
this year especially.

the internet isn't anything it used to be. it's now a "streamlined experience" where they can shut down ALL your linked social networks with one button.

social networks will be the death of the internet.
they only make you SEEM like you are communicating.
they filter everything and you see 1/4th of what your friends are writing and vice versa.

everything is being ruined and going down the drain.
this isn't the internet the way we imagined it being back then. which wasn't that long ago.

it's really sad what it's all become.

the internet is a place for you to do your online banking and for them to suggest stuff for you to view or read based on your likes.
it's gross.

i hope someone makes an internet underground.

meanwhile we have this place at least to hang on to.
one of the last places you can say something of value. imo.

That is a setting in "advanced settings" under "syndication"
If your vid matches a third party content i.e. copyright, you can't change this setting.

Notice here on one of mine that was flagged for copyright, the one on the left, that they also enforced "notify subscribers"

[link to postimg.org]

The one on the right is third party content free, so I'm able to change the settings.

Copyright owners do this because they make less money with mobile clicks and that's also why they wanted me to send it to my subscribers - more people, more clicks, more money.

oh, and one more thing to point out.
facebook doesn't even let you see your VIDEO folder on a mobile.
no matter if you use the app or a browser.
the video folder is NOT even able to be seen or accessed on facebook.

i find that to be very nefarious and purposeful.

The box is checked but grayed out and I can't change it. Without copyright infringement I can change it, like the one on the right.

This is the "matched third party content" video

No space on mobile for sidebar ads, only overlay ads. Restricting this makes people view it on their computer thus maximizing the potential ad revenue. Overlay ads + sidebar ads = more money.

oh and one more thing i forgot to mention that is huge.

apple is making it so that you HAVE to have your location services on to use an app...even if that app does not require it!

like i wanted to use this video in video app i had been using.
i've used it fine with no problem before.
i keep my location services off, for one reason it saves batteries to do so. and for another it's none of any one's damn business where i am if i want to use a silly video in video app.
it's ridiculous.

here is the screenshot to show what i am saying:

(no you do not need to be a facebook member to view it (YET!)

here is another screenshot of what i am talking about:

yes i am sure that could be said to be part of it.
but it doesn't explain everything.
and frankly i think they are just using that as an excuse to crack down on mobile sharing so people don't think and comply. because most people don't think about this.
because for most people this isn't important.
this is still mostly a game or entertainment for people.
but what they are doing is creating the internet to be the new phone. and if you control everything on that telephone then...well you see, i would hope, that it not very good.

but down the road when TSHTF it's going to be very important and people are going to realize these little inconveniences will cost them precious info when they need it most.

yes that makes it harder too.
but even if you give your name there are many roadblocks.
they are testing the waters on this right now.
seeing what they can get away with, what works and what doesn't.
they are in the monitoring and testing phase on how they will ultimately make sure they are in charge of the flow of information. especially video.

video is important because people see it as "real evidence" .
"seeing is believing" etc.

you control the seeing, you control the believing of the sheeple. very efficient. but they are playing around now with restrictions in the same way they test the waters for roadblocks to see how people react and comply with it.

OP is correct. Viewing videos via mobile devices is being clamped down. Its another boiling frog situation. Little by little, TPTB are reducing the ability to share instantly.

I saw this happen in the last few days when trying to view simple powersport short video. Not just delayed because of server conversions, but blocked from viewing from a mobile device. The settings (at least in youtube) are hard to find.... to say the least.
