"More than 200,000 people have evacuated to shelters - some shelters are overloaded,'' VNExpress said. The army has been mobilised to provide emergency relief with some 170,000 soldiers assisting people after the typhoon hits. Annear added that heavy rain could put hydro-electric reservoirs or dams at risk and warned of potential flash flooding. "Hundreds of people have flocked to hardware stores ... Customers are snapping up plastic sheeting, wire and nails,'' the official Thanh Nien newspaper said. Although Haiyan is expected to weaken slightly, it is still considered a super typhoon with the potential for "complicated developments'', said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at an urgent meeting on Friday. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49724322 [link to www.usno.navy.mil] It looks like it's weakened considerably though. Well, except that doom really could be on for Hanoi. Interestingly, it seems that everyone got all panicky about the Philippines and there were so many reports about impending doom. And that was for an area that was comparatively sparsely populated. But now we have Haiyan about to hit a metropolis of more than six million people. Nobody seems to care as much. Is it "fuck 'em cause they are commies there" or what? |

I can vouch for this. I am in Hanoi now, and just got back from my local expat-oriented supermarket. Shelves are nearly bare, and the only bottled drinking water available was stuff like Perier and San Pelligrino. No, we do not drink polluted tap water here. Luckily, I have some pasta and canned tuna in my pantry! |

[link to www.livemint.com] “We have evacuated more than 174,000 households, which is equivalent to more than 600,000 people,” an official report by Vietnam’s flood and storm control department said on Sunday. Natural disasters are good for our future survival... If we dont rebuild betternhomes and bridges to withstand bigger storms, earthquakes... We will die when the big one hits. Vietnam and the philipines will never know how behind they are as a country unless they were hit by something like this. |

I'm sure there were drills carried out by the USA & Australia governments a short while ago. Something relating to in influx of refugee's and how they'd handle it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44683239 Ring any bells? Yes I remember something like that though can't find any links. We are a very large, mostly empty country which must seem very tempting. Here is a somewhat related article. [link to pacificinstitute.anu.edu.au] |

Apparently, there are already six deaths in Vietnam as a result of Haiyan, and the storm hasn't even gotten there yet! Five people died while reinforcing houses and limbing trees, while one reporter from Quang Ngai radio station died in a working trip on Typhoon Haiyan before the typhoon making landfall, according to the CCFSC report. It has weakened a lot since it hit the philippines but it is still cat 3 which is very significant, they do need to prepare. I hope it effects them a lot less, what happened in the philippines was unimaginable. |
