Many come with this argument but honestly I don't think its well thought through. First of all defining their prophecies as 'end of the world' is a bit too simple.
The fact that they made predictions about planetary changes based on observable cyclic motions does not mean that the mayans would be immune to the process of rise and fall of the civilizations. I believe there was somewhat a 'golden age' of the mayan civilization but it was followed by a downfall. Also the conditions in which the civilization disappeared aren't exactly well explained are they?
Its not like they can predict the future at the power of will ( I guess ) and be prepared for any event on their way. Things happen for reasons and they happen as they should.
