Anti-Common Core Speech by High School Student Wows Crowd
Speaking at a local school board meeting earlier this month, a Tennessee high school senior issued a brief and incredibly insightful address on the problems with Common Core standards.

Ethan Young, a student at Farragut High School in Knox County, Tenn., made his case as to why he believes the school district should drop the new national education standards, a set of guidelines that were never voted on by Congress, the Department of Education nor by local or state governments.

“The president essentially bribed states into implementation via ‘Race to the Top,’ offering $4.35 billion taxpayer dollars to participating states, $500 million of which went to Tennessee,” Young said. “And much like No Child Left Behind, the program promises national testing and a one-size-fits-all education, because hey, it worked so well the first time.”

Problem is.... he is making too much sense. The information is real. Its provable.

Such things are not permitted on the main stream news. And had they been, the people watching have a continuous program running in their subconscious that filters out such nonsense as truth.

Now had he whipped out a pistol or an AR his 15 minutes of fame would be assured.

This kid is right on.

Common Core is so deeply flawed I could go on and on, but the kids who suffer are the outliers. Because of social pressure, the special-needs kids are generally taken care of. As it should be. It's the gifted kids who suffer in such a system. In our district the solve the problem of what to do with these students with a magnet school for gifted kids...my son went there for kindergarten. They taught the kids at one grade level above normal. That's it. And they became really indignant when I suggested that it wasn't enough for some of the students.

Bureaucratic convenience indeed....

I teach college freshman at a major University, and I can say with experience that common core/No child left behind is not just destroying education, but destroying how kids/adults think for themselves. Nearly every student "studies" to pass a test; however, I design my test questions in a way they cannot study for with simple memorization. Every year seems to be getting worse and worse as far as student preparedness for college.

This is one of the biggest reasons I began to homeschool. As said in the video, we are no longer teaching students, but little robots. The current educational system squelches creativity and inquisitive natures. God forbid we should churn out any free thinkers upon graduation....

It's interesting. I'm a product of the public school system. It's through the process of homeschooling my child that I truly see how programmed I was. We started homeschooling this year and have been "deschooling". For those that aren't aware, deschooling is a process where you cultivate the child's natural wonder and curiosity. You avoid churning out the paperwork mill and focusing on seeking knowledge. He deschooled rather quickly....he's eight. I am still deprogramming with regards to education. I still feel the need to crank out the paperwork. I still feel the constant need to test, test, test.

I thought I was awake before I began homeschooling. Little did I realize how asleep I was. This educational model is beyond broken. It kills our best thinkers.

I believe it! I graduated with my degree nearly twenty years ago and it was a struggle for me to think critically. This was well before the days of NCLB, too. I had high marks academically k-12, but when I got to college, I could no longer dump a bunch of facts onto a test.

I see what school is like these days....the future is bleak unless the system changes.

Thanks for posting this OP. 5* and a bump

I have no desire to sidetrack/derail this thread but it must be understood where this crap comes from. Common Crud's origins can be traced back to the U.N. and should be investigated.

My kids go to a private school and are even there being taught math from a cc curriculum. We just had conferences and I made absolutely sure that was the only cc garbage being taught. I will remove my kids and home school if the state mandates any other cc garbage.

I'm sure many have seen the stories popping up lately about history books changing/modifying things like the intent of the constitution and bill of rights. Be on guard parents.

I always hated school because it didn't feel right to just memorize things for a test that we would never use in real life. There's something so bizarre about that and nobody seemed to mind it. History class I had a teacher who just had us sit in a circle and have discussions, and I learned more in that class than any other class combined in High School.

Kid is an idiot.

He isn't anti-Common Core - he is pro-teacher union.

His basic argument is, "Waa! You can't judge teachers based on results! It is impossible!"

He is just jumping on the anti-Common Core bandwagon to make the teacher union's case - probably doesn't even realize it.

Teacher's want no standards at all and they want to be impossible to fire. That's it. The Common Core thing is just a distraction from that.

You're a moron. I have several teachers in my family. It started with no child left behind, where you literally can't hold a child back unless the parent agrees. If a child clearly shouldn't move on, then its the teacher's fault, not the crackhead parents who don't even know the name of their kid's school, not the kid who shows up every other day at best, not the kid who threatens to kill another student, not the parents who act like your bothering them when you call to tell them that their son has behavior problems....No its the teachers fault for being a lousy teacher.

Oh fuck off, teacher's are always brainwashing kids to be their pawns. Look at how many marched in Wisconsin for the teacher's unions.

Teacher's care about themselves FIRST - period. They march so they don't get fired, they march to prevent school vouchers so they can keep all the government jobs and keep out competition - they've never once protested for shit that would actually help students.

And these teacher's LOVE problem students - they get more funding for them. Why fix them or kick them out when they get more money for it?

A report by the National Governors Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and Achieve, Inc.

Action 1: Upgrade state standards by adopting a common core of internationally benchmarked standards in math and language arts for grades K-12 to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to be globally competitive.
Action 2: Leverage states’ collective influence to ensure that textbooks, digital media, curricula, and assessments are aligned to internationally benchmarked standards and draw on lessons from high-performing nations and states.

The truth is in the middle.

It IS really hard to objectively rate a teacher's performance in the classroom when education is inherently cumulative.

For example, let's say little Johnny has really shitty teachers for second and third grade: the kind of self-serving teachers who are only doing it for the money. He learns very little those two years. If these two shitty teachers are in the union is makes it very difficult to fire them for being shitty teachers. This makes people scratch their heads and come to the conclusion that there should be a way to grade teachers and use those grades to get rid of the bad apples (pun intended).

However, little Johnny's fourth grade teacher is badass in every way: she shuns the unions, teaches the kids critical-thinking skills and really cares about the education of the kids in her charge. After the standardized scores come back for her class the parents are outraged to see that the scores are still low. Why? Because badass teacher spent the entire school year trying to get the kids caught up from their two previous years with shitty teachers...she had very little time to teach the kids the fourth grade subject material on which they were tested. So, badass teacher gets lumped in with the shitty teachers and the parents demand the heads of all three teachers on a platter.

The situation is not black and white.
