Military Veteran Put on Leave for Having ‘God Bless America’ in Email Signature

STOCKTON, CA – A retired military veteran who now works at a hospital in California was recently put on leave after telling his employers that he wanted to speak with legal counsel about their request to remove ‘God bless America’ from his email signature.

The Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) reports that Boots Hawks was called into his supervisor’s office at Dameron Hospital earlier this month and asked to remove the phrase from his email. While he complied with the directive, Hawks also told his supervisor that he wanted to consult with an attorney about his rights.

Much to his surprise, Hawks was put on leave for “insubordination.” He returned to work this Wednesday to find that the combination on his lock had been changed and his computer password had been suspended.

'God Bless America' gets veteran in hot water with employer
Before Veterans Day, Army vet put on leave over email signature

STOCKTON, Calif. (KCRA)

Boots Hawks served the United States for 20 years in the Army, he said Thursday, adding that he has been a good employee at Dameron Hospital for 10 years.

But when Hawks wanted to seek legal counsel about a request to remove the words "God Bless America" from his professional email signature, he was met with resistance, he said.

But on the Friday before Veterans Day, he said he was placed on administrative leave for insubordination -- all because of the signature, which had contained the "God Bless America" phrase for more than a year before the hospital brought up the issue.

Hawks contacted the Pacific Justice Institute, a legal group that now represents him.

The institute told KCRA 3 the hospital might be breaking the law.

"We are aware that other members of the hospital management circulate mass emails which include philosophical statements," said Matt McReynolds, the attorney handling the case, in a letter to Dameron Hospital. "We know of no legal authority that would justify your censorship."

Yeah, if he works for a private institution, veteran or otherwise, he has to comply with their policies.

Not everyone wants to see the word 'god' or hear about someone's god or know that you believe in god based upon opening a business email. The company makes their own policy and as an employee he is bound to follow the policy or not work there.

Not everything is a platform for bible thumping.

And I like the way you like to politicize this whole thing by referring to they guy as a veteran in the thread title but not mentioning that it was a business email.

Veterans are not above the secular law of the land in this country. "In god we trust" and "God Bless America" are simply marketing gimmicks interested into the American vernacular by greedy, lime-light loving politicians who wanted to turn a secular nation into a religious fundamentalist death match. It's absurd.

If he wants to have that particular phrase as his business email signature, he should work for a company that allows for it, it's that simple.

As horrible as it is for an employeer to do that to someone over such a small yet overtly positive message, if you work for someone else you have to play by their rules.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

You're a tard. It's totally illegal to fire someone because they asked to speak with legal counsel.

You're a tard too.

Just because you work for someone doesn't mean you don't have any rights.

It's an outlook email signature. No bible thumping ! And for some of you "In god we trust" is a common phrase. For some of you uneducated idiots you should be able to see that! Their place their rules is not suitable. I am sure they did not get down to stating what goes in email signatures.
