If we see it go supernova, it means it actually went supernova 600 years ago.. That's pretty simple to understand right?

Are you serious? A star will not change colors to show you it's going Supernova. Your atmosphere probably was really unstable. You realize it it went supernova you won't see it in your lifetime, correct?
 Quoting: #Geomagnetic_Storm#

To be fair, it may have already gone supernova. It almost certainly hasn't though.
 Quoting: Lime Flavoured Redux

that's right: we won't get the "information" until 600 years after the fact.

any "super-luminal" events, of course, will travel instantaneously: which means the people back in the Middle Ages
got whacked good and plenty.

well, if you understand that light only travels at
186,000 miles per second, yes, that particular "information"
will take 600 years to get to Earth.

(yes folks, even just 600 light years is very far far away, indeed :)

So, if BG went Supernova in 1413, we would only be aware of it now - correct?

How is that comforting? Knowing that once we see the event, we're pretty much fucked?

Or have I got it wrong?

Is that the star I've watched grow for the last few years? It blinks wildly and appears to be growing bigger? I have zero astronomy knowledge, even at the most rudimentary of levels, so I have no clue in what direction it is located in the sky, what constellations it is near, or any of that.

if a star reaches the "Red Giant" stage of its life, and
it has a certain huge amount of mass, it does not explode
as a Super-Nova, but, rather, collapses into a Black Hole.

Betelgeuse is 600 light years from Earth.

that means that when we see its Super-Nova explosion occur,
that means that it actually happened 600 years ago, and
we are just now seeing it (because that's how long it
took the light from the explosion to reach earth.)

(note: it take sun light 8 minutes to reach Earth, at
only 93,000,000 miles away)

Yes you are correct. If Betelgeuse went supernova it happened 600 years ago and we are about to witness it today. Also, 600 years ago was BLACK DEATH in Europe, which would have happened at the exact time Betelguese went supernova.

I saw it last night and it was YELLOW instead of the usual red. According to wikipedia, Betelgeuse will enter a brief yellow phase before going supernova.

Re: Betelgeuse is about to blow up!
Just got back from my time travel episode and we should be good to go. I ended up making it to 2700 to give myself some room for error.

I was able to verify that Betelgeuse was still active. I tried to take a photo but my camera did not work due to the battery being dead for nearly 700 years. :(
