I was raped when I was kid - and I only have told 3 people in real life about that day, but when I did tell what happened to me I guess you could also describe my emotions and "calm and methodical." I only ever told anyone many years after it happened, and I had spent years in silence grieving and coping alone...when I think about that day now, I dont cry. I don't get angry. I hardly feel anything really...and my brain struggles to remember the ordeal in its entirety. I don't even remember my attackers name, and can remember little of his appearance other than his eyes and some other hazy details.

Everyone has their own coping mechanism for traumatic events, so I am not going to say she is lying simply because she wasn't overly emotional when telling her story.

I also am not going to victim blame her either. Should we live our lives in fear of the what-ifs? Should we shun our adventurous spirit because something terrible might happen to us? We make dangerous decisions all the time...We never would have learned to fly if adventurous, brave, and intelligent people didn't put themselves in dangerous situations to chase their dreams. Are the astronauts who have died in space exploration stupid for putting themselves in that situation? What about the Magellans, Sir Francis Drakes, Marco Polos of the world?

To live is to dream, and sometimes our dreams take us to dangerous places.

Besides, this women could have been raped anywhere. Thousands of people go to Africa and are not raped or killed. I'm sure she was aware that there was some danger, but there is some danger every time you sit in your car and drive on the roads...If you let fear conduct your life, I don't think you will ever know what it really feels like to live.

Rape is horrible, and it is the fault of the guy who did it, not the fault of the victim.

African men can be rapists, but so can men from any other country. The girl took a chance when she left her own country, but it could have happened anywhere. It could have happened right in her own home town. That's where the majority of rapes happen.
