The SHTF Guide To Bartering
This goes out to the less prepared, or younger people like myself who simply haven't had the time or money to properly prepare. If it were up to me, I'd be on 100 acres of land with a bunker and a few years worth of goods. We can't all be so fortunate.. so here's the next best solution.

When it all goes down, that dollar you managed to save after the greedy fucks took the rest will be as good as toilet paper. Bartering will mean the difference between life and death. I have a hunch, the well connected and prepared will live fairly well.

Do not think only about what you need, feel free to think about what things people need.

First and foremost, What items will reign supreme?

Guns & Ammunition I'd suggest a sidearm, a long rifle and a battle rifle if you can afford it. Particularly those of common caliber and are military grade. An excellent SHTF rifle would be a Mosin Nagant. If you can't protect yourself, bartering is useless.
Medicine Everything from Syringes, to gauze, to antibiotics (Especially this), and medications for common life threatening illnesses. People will give their left nut to get these if they need them bad enough.
Any type of fuel
Coffee During a crisis, Coffee will be gold.
Condoms May sound funny, but think about it.
Sugar
Alcohol I'd strongly advise learning how to make Alcohol. You can make it out of most any food, even spoiled food and leftovers. For this I'd advise a yeast reserve, as yeast can be multiplied.
Tobacco Even if you don't smoke, consider how expensive cigarettes are in prison. It would be no different when SHTF. You can buy a huge bag of it for 20 bucks.
Seeds Not only food seeds, if you catch my drift stoner
Water Filters Very cheap, very important, and will be overlooked
Soap and hygiene products
Lighters, matches, candles, light sources in general
Salt, pepper, spices
Toilet Paper Have you ever wiped your ass with a Pinecone?
Socks
Batteries
Your hot sister
Bleach
Hand tools
Trash bags, and lots of them
Disposable silverware and plates

I could go on for days. In the end it's smart to stock up on small, cheap things that will be a luxury or necessity in the future.

I came across a great story of a man in Bosnia and his SHTF experience.

Prioritize, use your head

You're going to see fools cracking open parking machines for worthless coins inside.. I'm going be the guy that takes the solar panel on top of it that most people will overlook.
It's things like this that will help you in the long run. Don't be a greedy moron and steal a TV.

Practice your bargaining skills

Never act like you really need the thing you want to buy (let it be your second choice for example).
Split trading items in more pockets when you're bargaining (do not bargain with a hand full of wealth).
Many times the seller will set the price based on how he sees you in that moment. So of course do not show off any symbol of wealth. Don't stand out or be flashy, this is the quickest way to attract attention to yourself.

Also remember that buying things at the flea market (in your case maybe yardsale or similar), is very good practice for trade in SHTF conditions. Simply because that's how it will work.

You must consider supply and demand as well. In the beginning certain items will not be of much value. People will still be under the illusion big brother is coming to save them. Disease and famine have not yet set in, this will make medicine increase exponentially in value as people realize the gravity of the situation. In the beginning candles will be gold, but as time goes on they will prioritize and find more efficient means of lighting their homes. Consider the best timing to buy and sell what you have to work with.

When you're selling something, don't sell in bulk. Don't sell a gallon of alcohol, sell a pint at a time.

Staying alive in regards to bartering

Your biggest concerns should be keeping a low profile and avoiding scams. Keeping a low profile means never showing your wealth, and acting as impoverished as the next guy.
Scams are found even in today's market. Look at all the nasty fillers they put in food products, hell even baby food has fillers. They will not care, they will do anything they can even if it means you dying to get a leg up. Look for things that are canned, sealed and haven't been tampered with.

I'm sure I haven't covered it all, but I know a lot of younger preppers like myself feel powerless to the situation. Even if it means buying a pack of lighters, it's a step forward.

I find your list, lets say Intriguing !!

Could there ever be a disruption in oil ?
Could there ever be a disruption in transportation ?
Could there ever be a disruption in suppliers ?
Will the dollar last forever ?
On and On and On.............

Animals, chickens rabbits goats, livestock that is easy to maintain feed rapid reproducers, would be good characteristics.

If not feasable, focus on other items.

Re: The SHTF Guide To Bartering
What is the least molested, nearly cheapest, purist protein, supplier of iodine, eaten by cats, dogs, and humans, easy to conceal, able to store for ten years, extremely convenient for travel?

Sardines. Can also be donated to food banks, and animal shelters if tsdnhtf.
My Mom used to stretch Salmon by scrambling it into eggs. It was actually a house favorite.

So I tried it with sardines in 2 eggs. It was very similar.
Could have fed 2-3 people.
But next time, I would use 3 eggs.

Your Sister??
We forget sometimes that there are saints living among us.
When we meet them, we are reminded, not just of the presence
of pure divinity right here on earth, but also of our own potential,
and of the responsibility we have to try to live up to it ~
for our own sakes and for the very future of this planet.

Re: The SHTF Guide To Bartering
Sardines are good for protein and around here I buy it when the stores have them on sale and I feed it to the cat. Normally on sale its about 2 for $1. I also buy peanut marzipan, that stuff stays good for about 3 years. The kids love it and even I like it.

You can make your own fruit leather or buy fruit rolls and keep them for vitamin C. Personally I prefer the fruit leather over taking pills for vitamin C. However you also can buy lemon juice real cheap. I keep about 3 gallon around. When I can fruits and even meats I make sure to put in a spoonful of lemon juice. I know it's not much but it's enough to help us to stay healthy.

For bartering try buying cheap perfumes, soaps, deodorants, and things like that at the dollar store. It will be worth a lot when something bad happens.

I stock up on sanitary pads all the time even though I don't use them. I had a friend tell me they could be used as a bandage if needed. Also if you have old clothes at home cut them up into small pieces that you can use for T.paper. I have about 5 small plastic bags full of cloth like that just in case.

You can even buy cheap coffee at the dollar store. It would be well worth buying if you know you can trade it later on.

Generic aspirin, sells for roughly $1 a bottle, now. Good for pain and some heart conditions.

Any canned Pacific salmon, packed pre-Fukushima might be a good investment too.

Re: The SHTF Guide To Bartering
Might trade FOR gun gear or ammunition, but never trade those items to anyone you don't LOVE & Trust dearly...

Fels Naptha bar soap along with 1/2 cup Borax and 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda makes a fine laundry soap when mixed with 5gals of hot water in a clean paint bucket. That stuff is CHEAP, and cleans w/o damaging clothes and does a fine job. Cost about $3 to make a batch. Are you spending $20 for a gal of concentrated detergent? We used to... Not any more!

Got clothesline and clothespins? Maybe a washboard and a washtub? Might be very handy if you aren't setup with a HD inverter and battery to power your washer.

Clothespins are pretty cheap, be good to have extras for barter.

Got funnels and measuring cups? Very valuable common stuff you can use everyday, and others prolly won't have. How about broom and mop gear?

Ziploc bags and garbage bags are very versatile, as are canning jar seals and lid rings. Vinegar and bleach usually pretty cheap and valuable to have. Plain hypochlorite bleach purifies water using 8 drops to a gallon. Avoid scented type products unless for cleaning. Might want some Ammonia also.

Really worth buying the Kurt Saxon Survivor series and his Chemistry book. Home formulary references and old encyclopedias have much in the how-to category, along with the old Popular Mechanics from the 20s.

PRI-G and PRI-D for gasoline and diesel are restorative chemical formulations that sell for about $25 a bottle. These restore STALE fuels to full power. Probably won't need it for diesel fuel but takes about .2oz of the stuff to restore 5gals of fuel. Might be able to barter your ability to restore old gas. I have used Acetone to perk-up old gasoline stored like 5yrs in Blitz Jeep Cans and the stuff ran just fine in our generator.

Hard to beat having a bunch of drugstore Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. I use 90% rubbing alcohol to clean fuel tanks I have any concerns about. Takes the old lacquer and grime right off the walls of the can. Have also used BB's to rattle around in there and scour the walls when rust or grime is very heavy.

Might have a scissor sharpening, saw sharpening service that you can barter. Might also buy a bulk tank valve adapter that allows you to refill the small Bernsomatic and Coleman size propane jugs from 5gal tank. Those little tanks hold about .1 gal of propane and cost $5 or more these days. Refill them and save money....

See my Lester On Survival thread for more ideas, just look in the archives...
