First, this story is out of Utah. Most of the idiots there believe some fucking angel named Moroni visited Joseph Smith in 1823. Moroni!

Second, for every scammer (there's a gypsy walking with a twisted limp and feigning a crippling disease on the streets every hour) out there, it's a safe bet there's ten others (whether because of mental illness, addiction, or just hard times) who aren't scamming.

Everyone has a choice. If you're giving and the person's scamming that's on the scammer. If you choose not to give, that's your right as well.

If someone is running a scam that's so good that I buy it and give them money, I leave with the hope I helped. They leave with the fleeting satisfaction that they got over on me. But they lose in the long run. Every time they take on the shake (whether they be a JP Morgan or on the corner) they diminish themselves; whether they know it or not.

If I can afford to give, I give. If I can't, I don't.

A couple of professional beggars aren't going to hinder me from reaching-out when I can. I won't pass-by those in need for fear of being scammed. That's just chicken-shit.

I agree. Growing up and living all my life in big cities [not the suburbs], I can tell the difference, usually. And I've seen my share of all kinds, including of course hustlers and bullshitters. But there are a lot of mentally ill people on the streets, and there are also people who maybe fucked up somewhere along the line and found themselves homeless. Then there are the druggies and alcoholics.

I've been seeing this woman for YEARS now, she's obviously mentally ill, homeless, in and out of shelters which are scary places for mentally ill and sane people alike. I always call her sweetheart and give her a few bucks. Sometimes she recognizes me, sometimes she's in her own world.

I have not been 'cautious' in giving and as a result I have no life-savings. I have no home. No home. Reckless. This recklessness has me sleeping in a tent now. In a tent city teeming with racoons. And gypsys. And wild chickens. And a band of black thieves who keep the camp awake each night as they count their ill-gotten scratch garnered from robbing white homeless women.

Whew! That's a lot of truth to swallow on Thanksgiving Morn.

Let me recap to ensure I have your counsel correct:
