Bishop Dresses as Homeless Man to Teach Lesson
At least five people asked David Musselman to leave the church property in Taylorsville, some gave him money and most were indifferent.

He said he disguised himself as a homeless man to teach his congregation a lesson about compassion. To make his appearance more convincing, he contacted a Salt Lake City makeup artist to transform his familiar face to that of a stranger not even his family recognized.

"The main thing I was trying to get across was we don't need to be so quick to judge," Musselman told KUTV-TV.

He received varied reactions to his appearance at church, he said.

"Many actually went out of their way to purposefully ignore me, and they wouldn't even make eye contact," he told the Deseret News. "I'd approach them and say, `Happy Thanksgiving.' Many of them I wouldn't ask for any food or any kind of money, and their inability to even acknowledge me being there was very surprising."

and they probably would have acted like that no matter how he looked. that's how people are nowadays.

and making yourself to look filthy and wear ragged clothing to appear homeless is an insult to all the homeless people who are clean and wear nice clothes.

I wonder how the bishop will feel if one of his congregation loses his or her life trying to help a homeless person.

Possibly true, only you can create the view of life you want to have. Though in my experience most people that I pass on the street make eye contact and smile nicely, and I live in a big city. Though that could have to do with the glimmer in my eye and quick smile.

Though if he dressed like a normal person it wouldn't have proven his point. He needed to dress in the exaggerated manner to get the message through. How many of you shy away from those that dress differently or have different views of life than you? It's the same thing. Judging is judging.

Well, my mom has helped 5 different homeless get from the street to homes. She actually has one living in her home as I write this, the lady has been there for 2 months now, one month with my mom there and one as a caretaker of the home. My mom has a friend that looks in every once and a while to make sure things are all right. But this lady has kept the home in pristine condition.

Though you have to evaluate the situation and person for sense of danger. My mom has been helping underprivileged and homeless people ever since I've known her and she is still here and thriving.

I listened to an interview with this bishop on NPR the other day & he seemed like a pretty decent guy. He said he did it mainly to impact the children of the congregation in a powerful way. Some parishioners went as far as to tell him he wasn't welcome, that this was not a place to look for charity!

That's crazy, really church isn't the place for charity? Some people just don't get it...at all.

The get well caused me to shoot tea out of my nose...it still burns a bit. Haha.

Someone sent me an NPR link to a Stewart Copeland interview which was pretty good, and they covered this, which could have an ulterior motive, but I choose to take it as a see what some people are doing to open eyes. So some of the content is pretty good, as long as politics is kept out of it it's all right by me.

Re: Bishop Dresses as Homeless Man to Teach Lesson
Tough situation.

There are way more homeless people than most people see. I am in a big city, long story...making it short...

people do look away. Be it self preservation or fear.

A lot of homeless people do show up at churches. I see homeless families all the time out here.

People dragging luggage always makes my heart sink. They are not going to the airport.

I lived in my car for 40 days. I am female. It was not easy, but my faith in God kept me going.

The churches are inundated. It is wrong how churches look away. Some help; a lot help if you are a parishioner.

God help us all.

Re: Bishop Dresses as Homeless Man to Teach Lesson
I'm not surprised. I worked for a non-profit and spent months contacting churches to get them to spread the word about a volunteer, nationwide research project to fight cancer.

All I wanted them to do was share some fliers with their congregation, put up a few posters, etc because so many people are touched by cancer. It was to find people willing to participate.

NONE of the churches were interested when it wouldn't have cost them a cent to share the info.

I'm not surprised by what the Bishop found. Many churches just want to collect money and hold services.

I would challenge the other Protestant groups to show me their Christian basis. Right now the Catholics and LDS are showing me more fundamentals than the 'fundamentalists'.

This distresses me since I was raised to believe these two groups were directly contrary to Christian belief.

That's a sad commentary on the state of some of these places that feed the ego and status instead of spirit like they should. There are some good places out there though, that are there for the right reason.

Hey, I don't have a church but if you still are looking to share info on that charity I'd be interested and know more quite a few others that would be interested too. hf

It probably fits with other branches than just Protestant though. There are many that have lost the true meaning, again, there are also many that hold themselves up to true spiritual laws. Those that have gone through ego to connect again to spirit.

Re: Bishop Dresses as Homeless Man to Teach Lesson
In the upper Peninsula of Michigan, at Marquette's St. Peter Cathedral, we have had wonderful bishops since Venerable Bishop Baraga in the 1800s. It can get -40 below zero up here and this priceless church has always opened the meeting room downstairs at times of cold weather for the homeless. Volunteers on a list are called in and they set up cots, blankets pillows bottled water. A hearty breakfast is served and if its really bad they stay there.

they got into trouble for letting people use the church address to get mail. It seems they couldnt get welfare or foodstamps unless they had a "permanent address".

The city has places and one other Protestant church also has an open door policy. it used to be a few people when the city facilities filled up, but lately all facilities are full and the priest asked people for clothing, shoes, boots in all sizes including for little BABIES.

Christian Churches are dead. Jesuits have spent the better part of the last few hundred years, infiltrating them to destroy them form the inside out.

Christianity lives on in America, in an underground sense of things.
