Call for International support: Pungesti, Romania under SIEGE from Police Forces and CHEVRON
Call for International support: Pungesti, Romania under SIEGE from Police Forces and CHEVRON

December, 2nd, 2013

After facing strong opposition from local community and from a strong national movement of support, Chevron had to scale down activities in Pungesti. Until last night, when the assault started at 5 AM!

Police and CHEVRON joined forces to dismantle the local resistance group camped right on the field where Chevron plans to explore for shale gas. After 2 months of resistance, 40 people were beaten, arrested on their own land and taken to the nearest town for further investigations. The Spokesperson from the Jandarmerie cannot be reached, the media does not have access at the site, and the road to Pungesti is blocked by Chevron equipment and Police intervention cars.

Children cannot go to school at this point. The road is also blocked for anyone else, the villagers cannot go to work, the press is kept kilometers away from Pungesti. All this was planned in detail by the local authorities, the Police and Chevron to help the company install it’s shale gas exploring equipment on the site.

This abusive intervention is without precedent in democratic Romania. It is an irresponsible, dangerous attack on human and civil rights, as recognized worldwide. All this is happening a day after the Romania National Day, in a context of large 3 months nationwide (and international) protests against fracking and cyanide use in Romania.

Please spread the news and help us rise awareness on this difficult situation in Romania. Wherever you may be. Contact your representatives and ask them to act immediately against this abusive behavior of the Romanian authorities against the people.

We want the right to private property and free speech. Is that too much to ask?

(Also, we did not know what we were getting into when we joined the EU.)

Chevron has not bought land from our government, they only have a lease agreement (which was obtained by shady means anyway). Using hydraulic fracturing, Chevron will harm the environment and destroy not only the leased lands, but also the private property of the villagers who oppose fracking!

Also, the villagers who were abused this morning were protesting on a PRIVATE PROPERTY and the police force had no rights to arrest them.

Is this not a flagrant infringement of private property rights?

While their parents and grandparents were beaten and removed from their own lands by the police who came to make way for Chevron's drilling equipments, a group of children from Pungesti started singing! All alone, waving Romania's flag, the kids sang: "Plange mama, plange tata, Romania e furata / Urla lupul la Pungesti, Romania, unde esti?" (rough translation: "Cry mother, cry father, Romania is being stolen / The wolf howls at Pungesti, where are you Romania?").

Re: Call for International support: Pungesti, Romania under SIEGE from Police Forces and CHEVRON
PUNGESTI - Hundreds of Romanian riot police armed with batons early on Monday forcibly removed some 100 villagers who had been camping out for weeks in protest of Chevron's plans to drill for shale gas, witnesses said.

The residents of Pungesti in northeastern Romania had set up a protest camp in a privately-owned field next to the site where the US energy giant plans to drill its first exploration well.

"The police arrived, they beat us and dragged us away," said one of the villagers, Elena Privac.

"They forced us out of the camp we had set up and blocked the road, not even school buses are allowed to pass," she added.

Journalists were stopped from going near the scene and the police were not available for comment.

Around 1,000 riot police were involved in the operation, while the police put the number at 300.

The owner of the field where the villagers had been camping out for more than six weeks had agreed to the protest.

There were about 100 protesters blocking the road. The man from the ambulance is an ex mayor of Pungesti, from 2000 to 2004, and he was pulled out of his car because he blocked the road with his car. He got a brocken rib, but he returned from the hospital and is now standing among the protesters. Some protesters were loaded into a truck of the gendarmerie.

Chevron is controlling US government.

Following their guilty sentence for the dumping of 18.5bn gallons of toxic waste in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Chevron is amassing the personal information of the environmentalists and attorneys who fought against them in an effort to prove conspiracy.

*** Please take TWO minutes to adapt the template email below and send to the Romanian Embassy in your country calling on them to intervene in the situation in #Pungesti where hundreds of riot police have moved in overnight to forcibly remove peaceful protectors, leaving many hospitalised. We need to show that the world is watching. Please take action! ***

"Dear Sir/Madam,

I have received news from Romania that the Romanian government are ignoring the wishes of the people in the area of Pungesti and have brought in riot police to forcefully remove people and allow Chevron to proceed with operations. I am asking you the embassy to immediately call on Romanian government to desist from deploying riot police on its citizens who are democratically and justifiably defending their environment and land from the fracking industry i.e. Chevron. This situation is being watched internationally and the Romanian government must immediately refrain from using their police service to support a proven, destructive private, industry. The Romanian government must immediately diffuse the situation and respect the wishes of the people of Punghesti who are calling on their government to ban fracking. The people of Romania fighting this industry are fully supported by millions of people all around the world, who will be carefully watching this situation. I will also be contacting human rights organisations regarding this matter. Please inform me of how you, the Romanian Embassy in Ireland, intend on dealing with this serious situation that requires immediate attention and action."

Yours etc...

Thanks for the BUMP Slovenian friend!

For those of you who don't know who/what Chevron is, it's a murderous corporation who poisons the environment for profit.

Here's a link that documents how Chevron has abused human rights in Ecuador, Nigeria, Burma, Iraq, Philippines and even the USA!

Update from Pungesti: The situation remains critical after a night spent on the fields in -2 degrees Celsius, chased by the policemen. Some protesters were pushed and brutalized. The Romanian and international press was denied access to the area.

Please sign this petition that asks for respect and observance of human rights. It has gathered more than 12.000 signatures in less than 24 hours. Please sign and share, especially if you are European citizens, we need solidarity and support!

Why this is important

Pungesti, Romania, a village under SIEGE after a violent intervention of Riot Police Forces, requested by CHEVRON
Call for International support – December, 2nd, 2013 / Addressed to The European Parliament, The European Commission, to The Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament and to all #humanrigts NGOs that can monitor and act NOW on this attack.

After facing strong opposition from local community and from a strong national movement of support, Chevron had to scale down activities in Pungesti. At least until last night, when the assault started around 6 AM!

The riot police and CHEVRON joined forces to dismantle the local resistance group camped across the road from the field where Chevron plans to explore for shale gas, using hydraulic fracturing. After 2 months of resistance, 40 people were beaten, arrested and taken to the nearest town for further investigations. The Spokesperson from the Riot Police did not come out with a statement until much later and denied any abuse, while the riot police officers prevented the people from filming and recording the intervention. Media representatives do not have access to the site, and the road to Pungesti is blocked by Chevron equipment and Police intervention cars.

Children cannot go to school at this point. The life of the entire community has been severely disrupted. The road is also blocked for anyone else, the villagers cannot go to work and the press is kept kilometers away from Pungesti. All this was planned in detail by the local authorities, the Police and Chevron in order to help the company install it’s shale gas exploring equipment on the site despite prior official statement from Chevron country manager Tom Holst to halt any activity until the community agrees with the project. The same equipment will be used for the exploitation phase as well.

This abusive intervention is without precedent in a democratic Romania and it follows two months of continuous harassment and intimidation of the local community. It is an irresponsible, dangerous attack on human and civil rights, as recognized worldwide. All this is happening a day after the Romania National Day, in a context of large 3 months nationwide (and international) protests against fracking and cyanide use in Romania.

So nobody from the opposition or any liders you have didnt told you what is the way to make this right ?

wishes is not enought .

you have at least to count the wishes on this desputed area .

anyway I think that you are to much in panic about the subject of the gas production there .

if there is contamination, and so will have to stop gas production because contract terms are such that contamination can not be.

if your pro eco organizations have no contact with the lawyers your way is nowhere .

For example, if you know that the gel at the beginning is pushed from the hole out by the pressure of the gas from the well, from the drill .

It's about , so what are you talking about the contamination since they take the gel at the beginning .

it is no way that the pressure of the gas will not move the gel out of the deposit .
