Brrr..stay warm SPUD :) I'll be heading up to Alabama around Christmas time. I'm hoping we have some cold weather while I'm there. I've lived down here most of my life and I'm getting to where I absolutely dread the summers. These are the socks I picked up for my trip: [link to www.amazon.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 21903530 Canada 12/08/2013 11:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hmmm...I lived in Norway for 4 years and had -55 weather at the "worst" and never had that problem. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19583047 We always parked in a garage for the most part, but that time really sticks out in my mind because it was so horribly bitter cold….clear as a bell…one of those nights. I remember the car had points, and you really hoped it started… Let's not forget fuel lines freezing up as you're driving down the road…that's always a hoot! Damn.....-55 without a garage and plugging the thing in to keep the oil warm....good luck getting it started. Water in the gas must be a horrible thing too. I lived in Yellowknife for 10 years. Not many people have garages there. A block heater and an oil pan heater are enough for most people, though some use battery blankets too. If your car gets left unplugged for a day or so, it will take at least 3 hours on a heater, before it can be started with jumper cables. At -50F, your car seat is as stiff as a board and plastic things crack very easily. I knew a guy who got into his car at -60F. He hit the steering wheel of of his car and cracked it. Here's my trick to starting a car without a battery heater. Turn the headlights on for 30 seconds, turn them off, then turn ignition key. You will get a better power surge than from a cold start. Unplug the heater cords. Don't be the idiot driving around with cords hanging from your bumper. While you wait for your windows to defrost, put your automatic transmission into neutral to better warm the fluid. Idle like this for at least three minutes. Drive the first few blocks at 10-15km hr. to work the square out of your tires. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 2534473 Canada 12/08/2013 11:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live off the grid in saskatchewan canada, yesterday was -35c. We have no way to plug in our vehicles, and ill tell you a propane tank with a tiger torch is my best friend. I get a piece of stove pipe, with a 90 in it and shove it under whatever i have to start. Truck, tractor, car, generator. 30-45 minutes of that and anything fires up. A trick of the trade. |

SPUD (OP) 12/08/2013 11:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, this thread was fun…so... at -30 and below this condition happens even now with radial tires…I don't know how cold it was that night, too cold is the answer, my guess would be from -50 to -75…your doors and glass want to break shutting them cold. I do remember for almost two weeks straight the daytime high was -26f or 9 though. "Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most" ___________ "May your chains rest lightly upon you..." |

They were all the rage back when... yes, there are many that do. I have a pair. the thing is, as as someone who lived there, you know, there is different winter gear for different situations. I like the bunnies for some conditions, the Sorel Explorers for some and my old Mukluks from Sishmeref for other situations. just as the Inuit have over 100 names for snow, anyone living in the FAR north has many ways to deal with the weather. my uncle (lol) runs the iditarod so I have a great source for trial and error on gear. I love you. |
SPUD (OP) 12/09/2013 01:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We watched the iditarod take off out of Anchorage a few times…never gave that much thought to what all was involved. Are the sleds packed with dog food and human food for the whole trip? I wouldn't think you would find much to eat along the way. Is there food available at check points, or what? I never had any luck out of bunny boots, or full shank climbing boots, I froze in both(didn't fit right? IDK). I had some felt packs …i remember snow going down them but not much else. I guess n1b air force mukluks were the warmest thing I had…but they didn't do well in water. There has to be some good stuff out there now, like you said, with waterproof materials and all that is available today. No one would take the time to hunt today. it is still a very brutal and demanding race to go 1000 miles via a team of dogs across Alaska. I love you. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5439617 Canada 12/09/2013 09:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I didn't get the answer in another thread so…. here goes…. Quoting: SPUD I remember in the 70's in Alaska it got SOOOO cold one time the tires were square…it was fucking absolutely brutal cold. Frostbite your lungs, you're going to die bitch! cold. How cold was it? Just before it gets to -40. Hmm. I am living where its somtimes -40, and i have never had trouble with square tires. Maybe its under pressured tires. I usually pump my tires with 35-37 psi in there when the winter sets in. Usually tires hold 30-32 psi. you usually lose a few psi for sure during the first couple cold nights. Also A couple shots of gasline antifreeze is a must in every tank. Most of the time my fuel lines freeze before anything else. Ther is also differnt kinds of cold. Alaska gets that wet, ocean cold that is humid and brutal. Canadian prairies get that cold, dry, winter desert cold, where the snow is like shovling sugar. |

If i cant get to town for a while, i go wonky! Like bonkers... Im the guy in the bank who keeps looking at the fluorescent lights like their toxic, and checking over my shoulder like im being followed by the CIA. Its like a mix between extreme social withdrawal, OCD, and paranoia. Peppered with some stir crazy, and a dash of February funk. People turn on each other in deep winter, and then if your that isolated you have guns for sure. |
