Where to start? That's easy: Start in the middle!! (That way, you won't be too far from either end).

Seriously, don't worry about where to start, just start anywhere! :)

All about the hooks. 1st paragraph is the most important. That is where the reader decides to stick around or put it down. Make them curious, throw in a hook.

Thesaurus are great resources to eliminate common, boring words.

First paragraph can be something like a mild, clean romantic scene. Log cabin in the woods, snow, fireplace. Glass of wine then the phone rings.....she answers to a male voice "The decision was made, it is time...."

break it there to another scene. It will hook the reader. The more you can have the reader relate to the people involved in the story the better. Details, details

I meant to tell everyone on here. There is a really good place to connect with other writers, screen writers ect. It's zoetrope.com. You have to sign up and go to the writer's section, then ask to join one of the private rooms. There are several agents, and published writers on there who can give advice and will critque your work if you critique theirs. I joined about ten years ago, met a group of people in an office called the Horror library and got my first published short story out of it. (Horror Library Vol 1) They are now on Vol 4 I believe with authors like Bentley Little, Ray Garton, and Jeff Strand contributing.

 Quoting: Life and Love

Exactly, fire up the imagination. And the details are conditional. I try to keep it open ended. Best i can describe it as 1990's video games. The graphics were low but the details we did get helped form the basis for our imagination to fill in the blanks.

Like a scar on someones face. Some details but I often never say exactly so the reader can picture a scar as they want to.

Also good to include as many human senses as possible, within reason.

Sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, etc.

as well as deeper ones we connect with. Smell is especially powerful.

Burning of leaves in autumn....smell of fresh cut grass....these invoke deep emotional connections. Including these kinds of concepts while introducing an actor in a story helps the person bond with the character.

It also stirs emotional reconnection in the readers heart/mind. Subconsciously marking this particular book as a source of pleasure.

The setting Sun warming my face over a gentle wind. Smell of cut grass in the air, I glanced over and there she was.

Sun glaring behind her, a silhouette of silk drifting in the breeze. At last I found her above all odds......

Try to feel the emotion of which you are writing.

Interestingly, if you fear while writing you may induce fear in the reader, inadvertently.

Or use it to write a kick ass fear novel. Freak them out so hard they will never think the same again.

An engineer shouldn't ever fear the foundation...lol

Just a few suggestions

Another terrific resource is the book "On Writing" by Stephen King. It really gets into the heart of what it is to be a writer and gives some great technical tips and little things agents and editors look for to weed out the ameteurs. After i finished reading I did a search for all the words that were not needed, like "that" in my novel and it helped a lot.

Here are some others

•kind of
•sort of
•type of
•really
•basically
•for all intents and purposes
•definitely
•actually
•generally
•individual
•specific
•particular

Love these as well

Most of these Stephen King quotes were taken from this book.

1. “Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule.”

2. “Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.”

3. “Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open.”

4. “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”

5. “In many cases when a reader puts a story aside because it ‘got boring,’ the boredom arose because the writer grew enchanted with his powers of description and lost sight of his priority, which is to keep the ball rolling.”

6. “Life isn’t a support system for art. It’s the other way around.”

7. “So okay – there you are in your room with the shade down and the door shut and the plug pulled out of the base of the telephone. You’ve blown up your TV and committed yourself to a thousand words a day, come hell or high water. Now comes the big question: What are you going to write about? And the equally big answer: Anything you damn well want. ”

8. “When asked, “How do you write?” I invariably answer, “One word at a time,” and the answer is invariably dismissed. But that is all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That’s all. One stone at a time. But I’ve read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope.”

9. “Running a close second [as a writing lesson] was the realization that stopping a piece of work just because it’s hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it, and sometimes you’re doing good work when it feels like all you’re managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position.”

10. “You cannot hope to sweep someone else away by the force of your writing until it has been done to you.”

Yup, common words are boring to readers when over used.

I also find using one form of sense to describe another does impact. Like a bright noise or a loud light.
