A biting Cat

Sounds like he was scared about being in a new environment.

That's nothing, I've got a dog that bites cats.

yeap that's normal, cats will attack you without warning!

they think it's "fun"

I dont tolerate biting animals, they would be dead meat if they began to bite.

Give it time. The bonding process can sometimes take years. Just be patient. You guys are in the figuring each other out phase.

He's just being a cat. No big deal. Probably wont e we do it again.

Were you waving you hand around? Was he staring at it before the attack? He may have been attempting to play or hunt. Especially a rescue animal/cat.

Our Cat Hurly would like to eat my daughters hedgehog Pepperjack, it's always fail for the cat. But he can chew the heads off medium size bunnies and leave their headless bodies in the most crazy places. I digress.

Well, I hope you immediately slapped the snot out of it, OP. That was a dominance play. Let him know who the cat is and who the human is, and you will not have any more troubles. I have sweetest cat in the world, have had him for 10 years, but the first year I had him, I had to swat him a few times until he realized where he was on the pecking order.

If you cannot do that, expect to get bit again.

I like rubbing my cat on the belly. It invokes his instinctive reaction to claw at me and bite my hand that's scratching his vulnerable belly, but he doesn't really do it seriouslyt, only plays react, only scratching and biting my handslightly , knowing I'm not really trying to hurt him on his soft unprotected underbelly.

Make sure it doesn't have ear mites, that can cause a nice loving cat to be mean. Have the vet check the cat's ears

Is your new cat declawed?

If it is, declawed cats bite because they've lost their main defense.
When you said your new cat is chunky that made me think he was probably an ignored apartment cat (and hence declawed).

My cat bites but not in a malicious way. I actually thinks he's telling me he likes me and he's happy. Only cat out probably 20 I've had that's does that. He'll nip my leg when I'm putting food out for him. He'll nip my hand when I'm petting him. don't think he realizes how hard he's biting but he's not intending to hurt me and I don't get freaked out about it. Doesn't sound like your cat's intending to hurt you. Eventually the cat will understand you don't like that. Love it and be patient.

Cats can nip as a show of affection, I have a cat that does that to me all the time. It's when they bite hard enough to be painful you should be concerned.

BTW, take cat bites seriously, their bites are dangerous! they have a bacteria in their mouth that can cause a dangerous and rapid infection. If you get bit to where it breaks the skin, you should clean the wound immediately with alcohol or some other antiseptic.

I think he thinks he's being playful. Just wanted to start a game.

But my sister had a cat that would slap her if she left it and went anywhere. First thing when she returned home, the cat had to slap her a few times and then returned to it's normal very affectionate self.

Who know what they are trying to tell us but I don't think this is unusual or anything vicious. Also, sometime sthey don't realize it hurts as much as it does.

I would express my displeasure to him in a non threatening way.

His mouth is weaponized. He knows it hurts you.

luckily it didnt break skin, but almost it was close...he bit me meowed then ran off

Ear mites. Cats don't normally do this unless they are under some kind of stress or pain.

I will have to take him to the vet on Monday...but he will jump up to me sit on my lap and try to climb up to my throat and look me in the eye ...weird

Cats are smart, maybe smarter than most of us give them credit for. If they bite hard enough to break through skin its for a reason.

My cat is nice, nice kitteh.

I would worry if he keeps doing this. I had a cat that would bite, and HARD too. I would arm myself with a pillow and cut him off at the pass if he got "the look" on his face. Petting him was sometimes difficult, as you had to gauge his "pet limitation time"; he seemed to be sensitive.

Another thing that will assist if he is biting is playing with him; that uses up his "stored" energy. They are born hunters, and many times will bite at your moving hands or ankles: they just really want to play or "hunt". Find a game or type of play that he really likes, and do this about the same time everyday. (with my newer kitten, this ends up being 3X daily. She's got lots of energy~~LOL)

One more thing that will help your kitty to be more happy is something for him to climb on (maybe shelves or one of those towers) Cats love to be up high.

Kitty was probably handled roughly when young.

Some cats over stimulate very easily.

I would strongly recommend NOT HITTING back.

Always show kitty you are trust worthy and not going to tease or torment with your hands.

Go slow and stop as soon as kitty starts getting worked up.

Avoid butt and tummy unless kitty is relaxed and enjoying the contact.

These cats^^^^^ were feral or abused when I got them.

Treated with patience and respect they're now clean, nondestructive family members.

Also, cat bite is serious.
Any swelling or spreading redness requires immediate treatment.

I bet you didn't realize your cat was stalking you out before he bit you?

If you look for it, you can stop it before it happens. Cats get this wacky look in their eyes before they bite--it doesn't look mean, just wacky.

For cats, it's just playtime stuff. They have very powerful jaws and sharp teeth. If they really wanted to bite, they could chomp chunks out of you easily.
