pneumonic plague is spreading - PLUS unknown illnesses w/ FATALITIES reported in Texas
I was contributing to another thread (linked below) on the Madagascar pneumonic plague epidemic. It appears that this is really starting to spread.

There are many reported cases in/around Peru - one of which was a doctor who became infected after he was treating plague patients. It is unknown how many people he may have infected before he realized he was contagious.

There's also an unknown respiratory illness that's been reported near Houston, Texas (Montgomery County) which has resulted in 4 deaths thus far. Patients are said to have flu-like/pneumonia symptoms yet tested negative for the flu.

Here's the original thread: Thread: NOW: Two PNEUMONIC plague cases have been found in Madagascar

I'll quote my comments below - and continue reporting any updates I find on this thread.

We already have pneumonic plague and bubonic plague in America and have for a long time...so why are you so alarmed about cases in Madagascar when you may be living in an area that has already have reported cases.

[link to www.cdc.gov]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50764894

Those are isolated cases of usually only one person in the South West or California where someone gets infected by some wild animal or their cat and generally they get sick and go right to the hospital and get treated. We are talking about a third world country where people don't get treatment until they're close to death - if that - and dozens of people have already died or are very sick. More than that, there are reports of pneumonic plague which is far far more serious and deadly than plain bubonic plague. Bubonic plague is generally contracted through flea bites that fed on infected animals. Pneumonic plague is spread by air droplets, like cold or flu, from humans to humans and has an almost 100% death rate unless treated within 24 hours of sickness.

If you get it...you're fucked. I don't think we should take these things lightly. Madagascar should be quarantined.
 Quoting: mehitable lives

pinkthis

According to this newsclip video - cases are now said to be 84 with a 40% mortality. This is being largely ignored by the mass media and for those that are reporting on it, the seriousness is being down-played.

That in and of itself should raise warning bells with even the biggest of skeptics.

5*/+1 for op.... thank you! hf

it appears that Peru may be starting their own pneumonic plague epidemic.

oh, boy...... shocked

Due to the dangerous bacterium, the corpse of the young victim can not be ensured, and therefore will be buried.

In the area, said regional health Manager, would have about 150 families who live without basic services of water and drainage, which puts them at risk.

There are now 6 confirmed cases of pneumonic plague in La Libertad, as reported yesterday, 14 Dec 2013, by the regional manager of Health, Jose Evangelista Vargas. "We are waiting for the laboratory tests of 6 other people that were evaluated for some symptoms of infection with the plague bacillus, Yersinia pestis.

One of the new infected is a worker in a funeral home." Of the confirmed cases, unfortunately one died: a 17 year old girl who lived in a sector of the town of Visnea Mocanera, in the district of Casa Grande, in the province of Ascope. The Health Authority explained that due to ignorance, the deceased with plague was taken from the morgue of the Regional Teaching Hospital in Trujillo (HRDT) and subsequently transferred to a funeral home, where a worker of the funeral home who manipulated the corpse was infected with the bacterium.

A 68 year old woman and her husband are thought to have pneumonic plague in addition to a doctor who became infected when providing medical care to some of those cases. Of the 6 confirmed cases, 4 were in the province of Ascope, while a person contracted the plague in the Regional Hospital and the other is of an unclear source.

Trends

Reports of plague were received from 38 countries during the period 1954-1997. These reports included notification of 80 613 cases and 6587 deaths. The maximum number of reported plague cases (6004) occurred in 1967 and the minimum (200) occurred in 1981.

There are seven countries, namely Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Myanmar, Peru, United States of America, and Viet Nam which have been affected by plague virtually every year during the last 44 years.

Over the past 44 years there have been three periods of increased plague activity. The first was during the mid-1960s, the second between 1973 and 1978, and the third was from the mid-1980s to the present. The rise in reported plague morbidity has continued worldwide in the 1990's.

Texas -- Officials with the Montgomery County Health Department are on a mission to find out more about a mystery flu-like illness.

So far, half of the people who have come down with it have died.

According to the health department, all of the patients have had flu-like and/or pneumonia like symptoms. However, all of them have tested negative for the flu.

It's being reported as either/or/ & both at this time - but they're all caused from the same gram-negative bacteria. Very, very nasty....

'yersinia pestis'

the difference betw the 3 is how its transmitted and where the majority of the infection is located within the body

Re: pneumonic plague is spreading - PLUS unknown illnesses w/ FATALITIES reported in Texas
Pneumonic plague has been around as long as Bubonic plague. In essence, they are the same disease. What usually happens is that once in the blood stream, bubonic plague will, of course, move into the lungs and be passed that way. One theory of the spread of plague in the 1400's is that most of it in Northern Europe was actually the pneumonic form. Some years ago, a zoologist and epidemiologist working together pointed out that the type of rat known to be host to the plague flea did not inhabit much of Northern Europe. Also, infection seemed to move more rapidly in Northern Europe than it had in Southern Europe, suggesting that it was more likely pneumonic by that point. This was covered on either an episode of NOVA or Secrets of the Dead that I watched on PBS. I also did a paper on the Black Death years ago for a Medieval History course I took as an undergraduate. Even then there was at least some acknowledgement that pneumonic plague was responsible for at least some of the deaths in the 14th Century.

After a 3 year study on everything pertaining to a global pandemic, the results are finally being reported today. There is lots of information at the link - including a 50 second video on how fast & where the pandemic would be expected to be most concentrated. Some of the highlights are:

<snipped>

The simulations show how difficult it would be to contain or quarantine an outbreak in a global city. Although now that researchers understand how the underlying process works, it could be used to help cut off critical links in transmission.

'The air transportation network is used as a proxy for the probability that infections get carried from one place to the next,' Professor Brockmann said.

While it is impossible to accurately calculate the spread of a contagion, figures from the Department of Health suggest it takes as little as two to four weeks for a virus to reach different countries from its origins.

However, as 1,288 flights depart from London Heathrow to 80 countries every day and an average of 191,200 people arrive and depart from the airport every day, it is easy to imagine that the spread could be more rapid.

Masks and hand sanitiser were recommended during the bird flu outbreak

Also being reported today:

<snipped>

The FDA is looking at cracking down on antibacterial soaps.

The proposed rule covers only those consumer antibacterial soaps and body washes that are used with water. It does not apply to hand sanitizers, hand wipes or antibacterial soaps that used in health care settings such as hospitals.

Re: pneumonic plague is spreading - PLUS unknown illnesses w/ FATALITIES reported in Texas
Does anyone remember when all the talk was going around last fall about the new MERS virus? It was first identified in September 2012. It had been deemed a brand new virus that was discovered & named by an Egyptian virologist that had been working in Saudi Arabia at the time.

It has a 12 day incubation period and presents itself with flu-like and/or pneumonia type symptoms. Mortality rates differ depending on the source being referenced, but it’s upwards of 50% +

It’s in the category of the ‘beta-corona viruses’ which causes extreme & rapid onset of respiratory distress – its highly virulent – extremely aggressive – and can result in fatality in even the healthiest of adults within 24/48 hours.

In people with compromised immune systems or in young/geriatric patients, mortality can come even faster.
MERS virus is not species specific & has been proven to be able to jump from mammal to mammal.

Here’s the link for the confirmed animal cases:

-----

Here’s the link for how/where it was discovered with all the details of symptoms, morphology & mortality rates:

-----

Article from today (12/17/13) on MERS virus being confirmed as having been responsible for at least 71 people dead – all cases are said to have been spread from direct exposure from MERS infected camels:

[link to www.foxnews.com]

-----

^^keep that in mind^^

-----

Yesinia Pestis is the gram-negative bacteria that causes bubonic, septicemic & pneumonic plague. It also happens to be a beta-corona virus. Symptoms present as being flu-like/pneumonic in nature. Rapid onset of a high fever & sudden respiratory distress is common in all patients. It is highly virulent & aggressive and can be fatal in patients of all ages.

Mortality is thought to be betw 50-75%.

Yesinia Pestis infections are also not species specific – meaning they can jump from mammal to mammal.

Hi,
Saw this on Saturday

2013-12-14 06:29:22 - Biological Hazard - USA

!!! WARNING !!!
EDIS Code: BH-20131214-41944-USA
Date&Time: 2013-12-14 06:29:22 [UTC]
Continent: North-America
Country: USA
State/Prov.: State of Alabama,
Location: Hokes Bluff Middle School and Hokes Bluff High School,
City: Hokes Bluff

Number of infected people: 28

Not confirmed information!
Event location map AlertMap
Description:

Alabama public health officials and school administrators with Etowah County are still unsure as to why a group of students and one teacher at one school were affected Thursday by respiratory problems. However, they are continuing to look at the possible causes for the incident, which closed school not only at Hokes Bluff Middle School but also the adjoining elementary school. Robbie Stubbs, emergency preparedness coordinator for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said 27 students and one teacher have sought medical care for the condition. Eight students are still in the hospital for observation, she said, and are in stable condition. "We've been dealing with a lot of rumors," she said. For example, none of the students exhibited nausea or stomach problems. There have been reports of breathing problems and a skin rash, however. The incident began sometime after 9 a.m. Thursday following a PE class with more than 50 students. At least two of the s tudents have asthma, but about nine students began complaining of breathing problems, with symptoms variously described as hyperventilating, runny eyes and congestion. School administrators made the decision to evacuate the school and transport students to Hokes Bluff High School, just down the highway.rnrnAbout an hour after the evacuation, rescue crews were called to the high school gym, where four students and an English teacher who had had no breathing problems at the middle school began exhibiting symptoms. They were transported to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, as had been the other nine students. Etowah County Superintendent Alan Cosby said the middle school building has been checked out by state health officials and others. There has been no sign of a gas leak, and maintenance workers went over the school's heating and cooling system. An environmental services company is also checking out the campus, he said. On Thursday, workers checked for carbon monoxide, airborne toxins or other hazardous materials and found nothing. At the moment, officials are awaiting other test results. Police tape was visible outside the building, as well as the gym. Hokes Bluff Middle has a campus built within the last five years, but its gym dates back to the 1960s. Cosby said the school system may look at holding classes "in different venues" next week. "We may work out a plan over the weekend," he said, saying Hokes Bluff Elementary will also be part of any plans. The system closed the elementary school, which is just next door, even though no students or teachers there exhibited any symptoms. "We'll notify everyone as early as possible. We're going to do everything we can to make sure that this school and its students are safe."

Hokes Bluff Middle closed for Friday after students hyperventilate; CDC contacted

HOKES BLUFF, Alabama -- It was "pretty scary," Hokes Bluff Middle School Principal Greg Watkins said, when students began showing up this morning after a physical education class complaining of breathing problems.

"It resembled a panic attack, and several had trouble breathing," Watkins said.

Within hours, the school was evacuated, and as many 13 students and one teacher were taken to a hospital for treatment in an episode that is still as yet unexplained.

Etowah County Superintendent Alan Cosby said the school will remain closed Friday as officials seek out the cause. Later, school officials added Hokes Bluff Elementary, saying it also will be closed as a precautionary measure even though there have been no issues there. School officials have contacted several agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and the Alabama Department of Public Health, looking for answers, said School Board Member Tim Langdale.
