Canary Islands Activity

Well that is bollocks too, do you have any idea how much rain we had a few weeks ago? There were floods across the islands and over 60mm or rain per square meter, per hour. It was record breaking amounts of rainfall for the Canaries.
We had 3 days of it, undrivable motorways (with the bridges becoming waterfalls)...

Water takes time to percolate down to the unstable geology below ground.
That rainwater is still at work down there.
It may not be a mere coincidence that the current upswing in seismic activity began so soon after those rains.

Your concern for the people who live on Canary Islands is so praiseworthy I am at a loss for words.

I tried looking for it the other day, but I remember a recent thread that was about a possible huge tsunami created from this situation. I didn't read it fully, but it was saying new studies showed it wouldn't be as catastrophic as once predicted.

I can't find it now. :(

There were a few as of this morning.....I commented on them...but they were deleted?

Do you remember if they had links to these new studies? I don't buy it, but would be interested in reading their explanation.

If something did happen....how long before it hits the coast? Would we really have time to do anything?

You should write an email to Doug Mason, and maybe he can link you to detailed information and recent studies, and maybe share his insight on the situation with you. I am sure he wouldn't mind answering questions. He has been studying canary island landslides for 20 years. Or maybe some of his studies can be found online via Southampton University's oceanography centre.

Also research where the original information comes from. Ward/Day/McGuire. Who funded their research. What models were used. Who else has made hypothesis.

This is not a scientific site. But may have some jumping off topics to explore/research. Interesting at the very least.

Well, I am not at a loss for words. The Canary island folks live by choice in a place that has many known dangers.

A thousand times two miles away, people may require some warning.

If you live at the epicenter and are not already paying attention to the ground, it is your own fault.

giant tsunami takes out everything for 3-5 miles inland on every coast of atlantic ocean, you know... doom.

not a matter of if, just when.
