A Russian passenger ship, called the Akademik Shokalskiy, is stuck in ice off the coast of Antarctica, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reports. The research boat, which was on its way toward Mawson’s Hut at Cape Denison, Antarctica, is carrying 74 people. Given its location approximately 1,500 nautical miles (about 1,725 miles) south of Hobart, Australia, the boat falls under the purview of the Australian Search and Rescue region, according to the AMSA release. Chris Turney, one of the leaders of this Australasian Antarctic Expedition, has been tweeting about the incident. (He also made the video above.) “Stuck in ice. All well. Relief expt’d 30 hrs. Science continuing,” he wrote around 6 a.m. Eastern time. A few hours later: “We’re in the ice like the explorers of old! All are well and spirits are high. Happy Christmas from the AAE.” Finally, this: “Heavy ice but all well — windy!” with the hashtag #spiritofmawson of the trip. As of 3 p.m. Eastern, three rescue vessels were en route to help the stranded ship. However, the AMSA reported that the nearest were two full days away. Turney had something slightly different to report, with his latest tweet around 3:20 p.m. Eastern. “Shokalskiy met heavy ice Xmas Eve. Want to reassure family & friends all well. Chinese ice breaker expt’d 24 hrs.” Obviously it is cold in Antarctica, but just how cold is it? According to a weather station deployed at Dome Argus, Antarctica, temperatures near the South Pole have dipped as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit). |

The link is well worth looking at. The boat is big, and it is in ice so thick the scientists are standing on it looking at the boat. In the article, one man is quoted as saying rescue may occur as late as Saturday. The name of the Chinese ship coming to them is the Snow Dragon. The ship was retracing the expedition of: Douglas Mawson [link to en.wikipedia.org] Sorry about the wiki link :) But read about Mawson's expedition. One of his compadres dissappeared down a crevasse with the best dogs and all the rations. His second colleauge died of elevated vitamin A from eating six dog livers; (they had to kill some of the dogs for their food and the remaining dogs.) Mawson had to hold down his last remaining companion as the he was going totally insane and Mawson had to sit on him to restrain him from damaging the shelter. Ho Le Fuk! |
