H1N1 Alert! Dramatic uptick in reported cases of deadly illness.
H1N1 Flu Virus Surfaces In Chicago

(CBS) – Nearly two dozen cases of the potentially deadly H1N1 flu virus have been confirmed in the Chicago area, CBS 2 has learned.

Finding the flu virus among patients at Loyola University Medical Center is keeping special machines working overtime right now.

They’ve detected a sudden burst of the 2009 swine flu spreading right here in the Chicago area. Microbiologist Paul Schreckenberger says last week alone, 21 patients tested positive for Influenza A. All but one of those cases were the 2009 H1N1 swine flu.

“We don’t know why it’s emerging,” Schreckenberger says.

Alberta H1N1 Cases Double In One Week

One person has died from H1N1 influenza in Alberta, and the province's senior medical officer of health says this year's strain is causing a small number of people to get seriously ill.

Dr. Gerry Predy also says the number of confirmed influenza cases in the Edmonton area has jumped this week to 125, up from 65 last week.
The doctor says the number of confirmed cases will rise even more when children head back to school in January.

Influenza A virus subtype H1N1

In June 2009, the World Health Organization declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. This strain is often called swine flu by the public media. This novel virus spread worldwide and had caused about 17,000 deaths by the start of 2010. On August 10, 2010, the World Health Organization declared the H1N1 influenza pandemic over, saying worldwide flu activity had returned to typical seasonal patterns.[2]

On 26 April 2011, an H1N1 pandemic preparedness alert was issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas.[3]

In May 2013 seventeen people died during an H1N1 outbreak in Venezuela, and a further 250 were infected.[4]

In April 2009, an outbreak of influenza-like illness occurred in Mexico and the USA; the CDC reported seven cases of novel A/H1N1 influenza. By April 24 it became clear that the outbreak of ILI in Mexico and the confirmed cases of novel influenza A in the southwest US were related and WHO issued a health advisory on the outbreak of "influenza-like illness in the United States and Mexico".[23] The disease then spread very rapidly, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 2,099 by May 7, despite aggressive measures taken by the Mexican government to curb the spread of the disease.[24]

On June 11, 2009, the WHO declared an H1N1 pandemic, moving the alert level to phase 6, marking the first global pandemic since the 1968 Hong Kong flu.[25]

On October 25, 2009 U.S. President Barack Obama officially declared H1N1 a national emergency[26] Despite President Obama's concern, a Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll found in October 2009 that an overwhelming majority of New Jerseyans (74%) were not very worried or not at all worried about contracting the H1N1 flu virus.[27] However, the President’s declaration caused many U.S. employers to take actions to help stem the spread of the swine flu and to accommodate employees and / or workflow which may be impacted by an outbreak.[28

H1N1 Flu Spreading in South-Central U.S.

THURSDAY, Dec. 26, 2013 (HealthDay News) -- This year's flu season may be off to a slow start nationwide, but infection rates are spiking in the south-central United States, where five deaths have already been reported in Texas.

And the predominant strain of flu so far has been H1N1 "swine" flu, which triggered the pandemic flu in 2009, federal health officials said Thursday.

"That may change, but right now most of the flu is H1N1," said Dr. Michael Young, a medical officer with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's influenza division. "It's the same H1N1 we have been seeing the past couple of years and that we really started to see in 2009 during the pandemic."

States reporting increasing levels of flu activity include Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, he said.

I was going to post this but most people here ignore this is going on. A true epidemic will be this year, and it will make believers of everyone.

Texas on flu alert as more H1N1 cases reported

HOUSTON, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Texas issued a statewide flu alert Friday as more confirmed cases of H1N1 virus were reported.

In the alert, the state health department urged all Texans over the age of six months to get a flu vaccine.

At least three people in Harris County have died of the H1N1 virus, officials with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences told reporters. Houston, the fourth largest city of the U.S., is the county seat.

Test results showed the three men died of the H1N1 flu virus, according to the agency's spokeswoman Tricia Bentley. They are the first confirmed H1N1 cases reported in the Houston area.

Flu strains through the ages have proven to be real DOOM providers and with the current global population and "interesting" living conditions in some areas, I could see something like this mutating slightly and spreading very quickly, leaving many bodies in its wake.

Thanks GFG. I did not see that. Crazy thing is it's not just Texas. Seems to be all over the South, also in Chicago and Alberta. Spread out enough that it will be hard to do any sort of quarantine.
