Comet Lovejoy - Where to look - 5:30am - 6:15am EST (northern hemi)
If you were disappointed with Comet ISON’s break-up last month like many, then there is another chance to see a comet! A really nice comet called Comet Lovejoy 2013 R1, discovered by Terry Lovejoy of Australia, the Comet has been (visible to the) naked eye for many weeks now here in the Northern Hemisphere!!! Look due east between 5:30am and 6:15am , just before dawn. It is low on the horizon about 10 to 15 degrees above during this time, but it is visible to the unaided eye from a dark location. The Comet was 2.5 degrees south east of 3rd magnitude Star 65 Delta Herculis. (Comet Lovejoy is) easily visible in binoculars, looks awesome through any telescope, even telephotos lens capture it well.

the problem is finding dark. But I will get out and take a look.

Hale-Bopp was visible from the front yard back then - easy.

I usually am up at that time and have off this week til Thursday - a few days to try!

Funny how this thread is being passed over - it is nice.

I'm going to work early and will check it out then. I remember Hale-Bopp and it was phenomenal. I was really excited about ISON, but oh well. There will be more and the thing about comets is that usually they are surprises.

This. Finding a decent viewing location is hell. Light pollution infuriates the shit out of me.

I was able to get some pics of it but they more or less just show a green fuzzy spot with some tail visible. The tail more or less looks like camera noise though.
I really envy those of you that aren't stuck in the suburbs. I'm one ruined night of viewing away from shooting out my neighbor's flood lights. redface

Roger That. I happened to go for a walk this evening and took note of the afternoon sky. I am in Central Calif., and the sky was filled with chem trails. Not 3 or 4 but 12 or more. Fresno is not far me where I am. I am looking for the "fireballs" everyone is seeing, figuring they must fall during the daytime as well and this caught my eye. Astounding as I am a sky watcher and this was really over the top - flights between LA and SF may go through here-so maybe holiday flights could explain it but the traffic was going every which way (trails). Hence, we have an overcast sky tonight.
Had a dream long ago which showed me the future and it was not pretty. Been watching closely ever since.

It was supposed to be partly cloudy today. Right now overcast and the sun hasn't peeked out from behind the clouds once.

same here. on my way to work I looked, but couldn't spot it. The sky was crystal clear except for the location of Lovejoy... Seemed like endless clouds. =/

I agree and wish you could shoot molasses at the lights - sticky, dark, and long-lasting.
