Hotel owner refuses to refund £700 deposit to grieving pensioner whose wife died from cancer before their 50th anniversary party at his venue
A husband who booked a 50th wedding anniversary party at a hotel was left horrified after his wife died and the owners refused to refund his deposit.

Griefstricken Eric Clifton, 78, is almost £700 out of pocket after cancelling the event because his beloved wife Joyce, 72, died from cancer.

The couple had forked out £160 for an initial deposit and a further £535 towards the bash to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with 45 friends.

And their hearts will grow cold....

Wow. And here we are in the last days. I am blown away even so. I will be writing a little note to these people. I mean, isn't 2 months enough notice for cancellation?

Was just talking with a friend who received a $5 statement from her chiropractor's office. First of all, she doesn't owe them any money as she already paid them in full and secondly, how tacky to send a $5 statement to anybody, even if it WERE owed. Just catch it on the next visit IF it is owed.

Then someone she was shopping with wrote a check for a gift at Macy's. Apparently someone from her shopping group had a check returned. They were all shopping together at the time; they wrote my friend a letter saying oh, we have not charged your account but the check was returned. Please make payment in full for returned check. Eh?

OMG, I wish some people could have intercourse with greenback because they love it soooooooooo much!

The world truly has gone mad and madly in love with money.

Very poor publicity, he could have lost the 700 bucks but think of them as an investment. Have the papers come and report about what great gesture you had with the old man and gain a lot of new customers. SOme people are freaking dumb.
Banned as usual.

“It is far easier to be a weakling than to be a Real Man. Were the Earth less harsh or the circumstances of life less austere, man would destroy himself before the shrine of the languid goddess. Only Real Men can with safety destroy the tangled forests and wilderness of Earth and make from them gardens, but will those who inherit the gardens be Real Men? The law decrees that they must be, or the wilderness will reclaim its own.”

He should. But not the trash the place.

Sorry for the death - but a contract is a contract and there is a reason for the non-refundable status.

I know of someone whose daughter called a wedding and they have the same arrangement. So they are hosting a 25th anniversary party instead of a wedding party.

Maybe the man can host a wake for his wife.

Not very smart business. I think the greed spirit overcame him.

I worked for a certain lawyer for a long time. She had a non-refundable retainer clause in her contract with the clients. She often returned the money as she was moved to.

She would have never, ever done this, and she's a lawyer.

In these cases you gotta count with the possibility that the story will filter out into the mainstream and trash your reputation. Nowadays every little thing ends up on the dailymail or something. Too much of a risk to take for 700 bucks. Rather he could have been praised for his good samaritan spirit and reap some free viral net publicity wink

He's a retiree and he lost his 'other half'. Good grief. My point is people's colors are showing, including yours.

A contract is a contract, yes. But some things transcend a business agreement. Human dignity and compassion are more important than a contract, MUCH more important. If you can't see that, I pity you greatly.

Yes, we need a society that embraces these principles too.
