Nope, just like Gold, you can't pay taxes with Bitcoin.

Thanks OP, great thread, what other alt coins do you obtain if you do not mind me asking.

I don't hold any others. If there comes a Crypto Currency that does something I feel is necessary, or much better than Bitcoin (in a way that can't be implemented into Bitcoin) then I'll look into it.

Re: As a holder of 750 Bitcoins, I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you.
Well, I'm a newcomer to this cryptocurrency thing, but I have learned from past mistakes not to wait or hesitate on this stuff. So I now own one shiny Bit Coin. It cost me $785.00, which is a frigging fortune to me, but I'm thinking long game here.

I got 13 years until retirement. Wonder what this little itty bitty Bit Coin will be worth in 2027?

I'm guessing a lot. And if not...well, at least I gave it a shot.

I also have 36,000 Doge Coins just because I like the meme and the community.

Impossible to remember the encryption for all 750 different bitcoins. They still have to be stored somewhere.
 Quoting: Voice In The Wilderness

Respectfully I'm saying you don't understand what you're talking about. You can encrypt a million Bitcoins under the same password if you owned them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36123843

Yes. But they still have to be stored in a digital device, which is my original question. You may have the password to the digital device stored in your mind, but the individual bitcoins have separate keys which cannot be memorized and must be stored. Hence why I asked you if your 'digital wallet' is stored in an online or offline device? It is a security question.
 Quoting: Voice In The Wilderness

If it helps with your terminology, I have an Offline Wallet. My wallet is a set of words that I've memorized, and then can be imported onto any computer whenever I desire. There isn't a file I keep on my computer or anyone elses computer. It's pure encryption that software can later read when I desire to grant me access to my Bitcoins.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36123843

That's all I was asking for originally. Was it really that hard to answer? Thank you.

What happens when the powergoes out?

The same thing that happens with any bank. Only difference being that the block chain of bitcoin is stored decentralized amongst a plethora of computers. so its actually much more safe.

When the power comes back on the decentralized block chain protocal assures more safety and backup than any bank down the street. Your deposits are assured.

erasing bitcoin would be like trying to wipe out the DNA in every living cell in the body with a ppm of a carcinogen. It just is not going to happen.

Bitcoin is like eukaryotic cells to computers. The math is the DNA. The protocal will not transcribe incorrectly just because a few cells get damaged. turning off the power wont do anything either because this beast is mechanical. If banks could do what cryptocurrencies do, theyd just be math on private computers and their doors would all close.

so above, so below. bitcoin looks like a hologram simulation somehow, although I can't quite place it logistically and logically.

Here is a map. Although somehow intuitively it feels more plotted and 3 dimensional the way it is traced.

Imagine if cryptocurrencies were like borg nano-viruses built into a proliferating and exponential increase in microchip technology that grew eveywhere like lichen on trees. What kind of decentralized bank, or one world order, would that look like?

Not sure.

For now I would watch the entrepreneurship behind each coin, as the marker behind its success. bitcoin for now is obviously unrivaled, and unparallelled in that endeavor.

as for cryptocurrencies like quark-coin, they are good for their more specific applications, if they might have any. quark coin is good for its increased security, and it thus might have an app in the future for commodity exchanges or such. a lot of value could be built into such a protocal.

But for now, if you will excuse the analogy, we have to land the first rocket on the moon. I could be wrong, but my money is on bitcoin.

i do think its worth investing in other promising cryptocurrencies technically via its unique applications/qualities. but i don't think its entrepreneurship will compete with bitcoins anytime soon.

also bitcoin only has less than 500,000 souls invested perhaps. on that note, i think manpower is the largest issue. And bitcoin has hardly reached its potential. although a coin might be worth a lot, if you stop thinking in terms of coins, and more like decimal places, i think you can easily see the larger picture of how far bitcoin has to go. for example, most people might be happy to be a mere 0.00000012 invested sometime in the future.

cryptocurrencies could be like the first home computers. i'm sure it took more than a decade before almost every home had one. i think the technological rise of bitcoin could be similar to apple in that respect.

Bitcoins are so new, that even calling it a winner when barely anybody on this planet knows what it is, is extremely premature. Watch this map below, and note how few transactions are made globally in it: [link to fiatleak.com] I believe this is only a small snapshot of the block chain of bitcoin, but its a good indicator nonetheless. for example, Canadian exchanges are not included in this live map, and neither are the many private or peer-to-peer business transactions from countless vendors.

Re: As a holder of 750 Bitcoins, I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you.
Found this website about a month ago, and have been a silent lurker, until now. This bitcoin has me really intrigued. Saw some noise about it back in say, the summer of '13 around late May in some investment forums. Really was the first time I heard of this bitcoin. There was a few people that seemed to be really high on it. Anyways, had some money to make some investments during the year of 2013, and participated in discussions of all sorts, but with that money I never made any investments. I just invested it in spending and having a good time, and that I don't regret. Considering the value of 1 bitcoin then, and what it's valued here today, I wish I had given it more though and attention. Hindsight is always 20/20, but really the discussions then of supporters of bitcoin had me just as intrigued as it does now, or maybe it's rise in value now is the real reason. At any rate, I'm thinking about taking my income tax return and investing some loot into bitcoin, but really am just ignorant to it all. Since you have a lot of skin in the game, what's the best way for one to attain a bitcoin. Is it to still wise to invest at current price in 1 bitcoin, and where do you see the value of 1 bitcoin going in the next 3-6 months? I get that it's all a gamble right now, but from what I understand and of my own impression of what research I've done on it, or lack thereof, it really does seem to make sense in regards to being a suitable alternative to fiat money that has potential to be widely accepted. Sorry if I'm rambling trying to sound smart in a topic I hardly understand. I just want to invest a little change and get in while the gettin's GOOD!

First, even if its worth millions in the future, don't put all your eggs in one basket. put a safe cap on it somewhere, about what you could afford to lose without causing any discomfort.

having said that I'm no major investor. i do love to invest and spend hours thinking about it. but... I have a cap for bitcoin for my own investing somewhere between 1-3k, simply because i view it as highly speculative.

i'm comfortable owning tangible stuff in large quantities and proven technologies such as a car.

with bitcoin i'm also happy to see it crash as I am to see it succeed. I don't buy cars that way, based on speculation. I don't bet my entire life savings that way either.

best of luck investing!

Tax Free Money, I went thru Coinbase to get started. It's a web-based wallet, can make transfers/purchases from your bank account.

I started with .01 BC, then another .09 BC, then I took the plunge and bought another .9 BC, so now I have 1 BC total.

Already increased in value about a hundred bucks.

I also have learned a lot about cryptos, and now have some Quark, some Ripples, and lots of Doge.

It's fun and who knows? It might pay off some day :)

Bitcoins are worthless right now and will be until the price stabilizes. You won't buy shit with them because you're hoping they double in value tomorrow, and they probably will. Nobody will take your shitcoins in payment for goods because they might drop in value by half tomorrow, and they probably will.

Right now shitcoins are good for one thing, gambling. For people who don't live close to a casino and like a game with wild odds that change day to day, minute to minute. So don't sit there and try to tell me you're a currency trader. You're a fucking old lady with white gloves on and a handle in her hand looking for 777 to spin up on the wheels.

Re: As a holder of 750 Bitcoins, I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you.
Hi Everyone,

I appreciate you reading! With some insight, and a little bit of luck on my side, I was able to acquire a large amount of Bitcoins throughout the last year. Make no mistake, there are much bigger people than me, but I am one of the biggest BTC holders in the world with 750, and I'm very proud of that! I am happy, and I feel I have a personal responsibility to share what I see happening.

Some here will ask for verification via a signed transaction, but I do not wish to and if I was going to make this story up then I'd make it a lot more interesting, saying I own 10,000 Bitcoins or something :)

So before I dive too deep, I wanted to say feel free to ask me ANY questions you might have. For better or worse, being a Bitcoin holder has become my main means of living/investing. I still work part time with another job, but I never stress about money.

First off...here are some recent developments if you don't know:

1. Yesterday, Zynga (the company who made Farmville) started accepting Bitcoins.

2. Three to four days ago Porn.com started accepting Bitcoins.

3. About 2 weeks ago, a woman who sits on the board of Wal Mart, Cisco, and Goldman Sachs, joined the board of a Bitcoin startup called 'Circle'.

4. Max Keiser, who everyone knows, said about 2 months ago that Zynga was going to accept Bitcoin. He was proven right. He is now saying Netflix is looking into accepting Bitcoin. Time will prove if he is right.

I wanted to say that there might be some conspiracies of WHO is behind Bitcoin, but Bitcoin itself isn't a conspiracy like some here might think. It is open source code like Email that everyone can read. There are a finite amount available, and there are rules within the code that everyone has to follow whether they like it or not. Bitcoin is the first to successfully "fix" the problem of Copy+Pasting Digital money, it is not possible to copy a Bitcoin.

The main benefit to Bitcoin, is in minutes you can send value from A to B anywhere in the world WITHOUT the need for a 3rd party/bank in the middle. This is truly revolutionary and a game changer.

My personal conspiracy around Bitcoin is that intelligence related to the U.S. created it. I have no proof of this, but I just think it's a possiblity. The reasons are as follows:

1. Everyone here knows the Dollar is fucked. In 3-5 years the interest on U.S.'s debt alone will be around a TRILLION Dollars a year.

2. The U.S., whether you realize it or not, is giving Bitcoin the go ahead. You don't have people from the board of Goldman Sachs joining a Bitcoin startup unless it's been given the go ahead. Also, Fortress Investment Group (multi billion dollar company) has/is creating a Bitcoin investment vehicle. The U.S. will embrace Bitcoin with Tax laws written around it so they have SOME kind of competitive advantage in the decades to come.

3. Extreme Conspiracy mode: CNBC is being really kind to Bitcoin. EXTREMELY kinder than I thought they would be. As we've all seen with the "media parrot" videos that span many different networks, they are told/hinted at what to report about by "those in charge".

Predictions:

Bitcoin will and is proving to be a flight to safety so far, especially when world markets heat up in the coming months/years. There will in the coming years be incentives and easier applications for the everyday Joe to use Bitcoin for investment/real world purchases. For example my "Wallet" is me memorizing a God Awful number of words. Do you really expect Joe sixpack to do this? Hell no.

There will be wallets where your Bitcoins are "protected" to some extent from fraud as well.

Bitcoin is truly revolutionary and helps get more money into businesses pockets by making Visa and Mastercard less relevant.

With all of that said, I wish you all well, and while I don't think it's responsible for me to make price predictions, I WILL say that I think Bitcoin is still VERY young and VASTLY undervalued.

Now, since I am human, I will go make sure that the month long Porn.com subscription I "tested" out with Bitcoin still works, tomato

There are honestly so many things I could go into about Bitcoin. If you ask me a question I promise you I will do my best to give a sincere answer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36123843

one of the problems is that bitcoin will never gain world wide acceptance.
Go into the rural area of the world and try to spend it.
If they don't have computers and internet access its worthless.
Gold, silver and most paper money would still have value there.
Digital transactions, in any form, will turn out to be a good way to separate people from their money.
You just crash the internet, and no credit, debit cards or digital currency transaction will work.
With the right virus, you could probably wipe out everyone's bank accounts and credit lines and such. Its just out there waiting for someone to do it.
Maybe its the next False Flag, who knows.

Appreciate the responses Pink Sticker and JTB! Now John_The_Baptist, I've heard some talk about this Coinbase, and that it seems to be the most convenient place for one to attain a bitcoin. How does a web-based wallet work, and how protected is your stake in a bitcoin once in the wallet?

Well, since BC isn't a government backed currency, there's no guarantee that it will be here tomorrow. No FDIC insurance or anything.

I'm using Coin Base to purchase my BC, and then I transfer it to another wallet (I used Multi-Bit) and then I back up the data file to a thumb drive.

So far, so good (fingers crossed).

Gotta be careful, cause if you forget your password or something, you lose because there's nothing anybody can do to help you recover it.

Remember the guy who tossed his hard-drive and then remembered he had BC on it - something like 9 million bucks, somewhere in a landfill...don't be that guy ;-p

If you ask me a question I promise you I will do my best to give a sincere answer.

one of the problems is that bitcoin will never gain world wide acceptance.
