SOHO SATELLITE BACK ONLINE-UPDATED 6-8-06
Did anyone even notice that after a weird flash on Soho, the satellite has been completely offline? I have never seen this before and I have been watching this NASA site for a long time.

Check it out. No updates since 14:18 UDT on 6-5-06

LOL, no SOHO is in geosyncronus (sp) orbit with the sun. It's nowhere near the comet.

SOHO's been offline for 16+ hours many, many, many times. It's nothing unusual.

73P is not tracked by SOHO anyways, it's tracked by many thousands of obsevatories both private/amateur and professional all around the world.

Sorry. Linkup to image did not work. Do this...

1. Click this link [link to soho.esac.esa.int]

2. In the top left click on the Sun Now-CCD Bakeout logo.

3. Then click on C2 or C3 images.

Sorry for that everybody. I forgot about this sites links. 3DR

Don't really care about the comet or jackass Julien for that matter. thwak
Something else is up. I have seen them go many hours without a post, just not this long. Really weird to have a shot like that in the C3 and then totally offline...

I have a file of those SOHO "flash" pictures. A flash usually occurs just before a solar storm comes this way.

Imagine that. Cause-and-effect.

Let's check space weather.

Bingo. Disturbed.

You know OP, I've been watching SOHO for a few years myself, and I've seen this happen too many times to bother counting.

The camera malfunctions, it shuts down for awhile and then it comes back.

Same images precede it, either overexposed and/or underexposed areas, partially blocked by the arm or disc.

I'd say all things considered, they do a good job of bringing those images into your home from a satellite halfway to the Sun.

Screeching about a random glitch like this is just silly. Especially when it looks identical to SO many others - even though you apparently missed them all - you're just trying to stir up a reaction from the people who are unfamiliar with SOHO.

I would like to note that it appears something had been cut out of the picture on May 31, then again June 1 and I haven't visited since then until today.

I wonder if there is any connection.

It's not midnight yet here on the west coast, so still the 5th.

And this bake out is specific to the EIT images only.

Not C2, C3 Lasco or MDIs.

All you've captured is an overloaded sensor.

Yass, did you know that digital images are sent in little squares?

Little squares of information that - when connected correctly - form a complete picture.

When one of those little squares of data gets lost on its one million mile transmission back to Earth, it shows up as a blank square.

But you can pretend it's a Borg Ship if you want.
