Dental question re: pain with tooth extraction. Help needed!
My husband is having a lower molar extracted, as it is abscessed. We have dental insurance, but the whole procedure is still costing us a few hundred dollars. He opted to only have the novocaine, instead of the IV sedation, so we could save the $300 fee for that. Is this going to be ridiculously painful with just the local, or should I find some way to pay for this for him. I feel awful. It's literally a matter of paying water and electric bills, or IV sedation. What should we do??

He'll live. It is very painful but he will be ok. I have never been sedated for an extraction. I assume the dentist give him a round of antibiotics to take before hand, that should help with some of the pain by clearing the infection before hand. Clove oil applied directly to the tooth gives immeasurable relief in the meantime.

Also, is it top or bottom of the jaw?

Re: Dental question re: pain with tooth extraction. Help needed!
he won't feel anything as the novocaine will numb the nerves around the tooth ...
he may need some pain killers for the after tooth extraction but that pain which is not so bad will only last a few days if that ...

better to get the infected tooth out as that is what is creating all the serious pain in the first place ..

good luck

Bottom jaw. Clove oil, huh? Never heard of that. I'll try to find some at the health food store. Thank you!

Normally you would take antibiotics for the infection prior to removal and this would help in pain management. That being said, a local should suffice. From personal experience (I have had several pulled) its really not that bad. In reality if he is in pain now like I have been its a relief as soon as the tooth is pulled. What I felt when having a tooth pulled was pressure from the tugging effort, but no pain.

Hope it goes well for him.

Well that is good news. Bottom jaw is easier to extract and much less painful. Trust me, I have awful teeth. lol! My husband had one from the top jaw and the dentist was literally on the chair straddling his chest yanking at the thing. They had to cut it into 3 pieces and pull each root out one at a time. I have had more than one pulled at once with only novacaine. It is such a relief to have them out of your mouth....Only thing second to the pain of a tooth ache is dry socket. If your husband is a smoker he will get one, so plan on going back to the dentist to have it treated. The treatment for dry socket is clove paste.

I had both of my bottom wisdom teeth surgically extracted at the same with just a local, it wasn't that bad. I was on antibiotics for a week prior.

IV sedation is not required. Novacaine will do the trick. If he wants more comfort , then down a few shots of whiskey prior to extraction.

I have two wisdom teeth pulled at the dentist with just a few injections to
numb me up and some gas Nitrous oxide, feels like you drank a bottle of wine.
You can stay awake for the whole process which does not take long.

I've had my top molar removed without IV sedation. Wasn't painful at all. He should be fine after the local anesthesia is given.

Actually the most painful part is the first pain medication injection.

After that they wait 20 minutes and its mainly just pressure and cutting with tools and in about 5 minutes its over

I just had an upper molar done. Last week.

I wish I could have saved it.

Try to talk them into saving it if possible.

I think mine could have been saved if I would have fought harder.

As it was I wanted to end the pain. But on second thought I would have went through more pain if I could have saved it.

Once it's gone it's bridges and the danger of loosing more caused by instability after that one is gone.hf

I hate the pulling and crunching effect. Never felt pain whilst having extractions.

I saw a tooth get pulled with only Novacane...he said it was the most painful thing ever. Did not help that the dentist had to pull on it a few times. If he can handle the pain...then go without IV...

I just had a molar extracted with just Novocain, no problem. How would you like to have this guy pull your tooth?
