That is a fantastic idea. You must be the Greatest Cook in Ireland!!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52902034

Haha. I wish. I learned through making mistakes. I do have my kitchen well stocked with basic items so I mostly only have to buy fresh produce but not often.

I actually eat healthier by being frugal but fussy. Im very particular with my food so I can tell you that you ont have to compromise on taste to save a few bob.
 Quoting: mehitable

That's the only way to learn, I guess - trial and error. I wish my hubby were a more adventurous eater but he's just so basic meat and potatoes....anything creamy or too vegetabley turns him off. I wasn't really brought up to cook - for my family food interfered with our drinking, but I can steam veggies and I make a good soup. And crock pots are a gift from God!!!!

Haha. Just tell him what I tell mine, it's what I cook or it's in the dog!!!!

Don't mess with the cook!!!!

Smaller but leaner cuts of meat are better to cook and eat. I have a mate who delivers to butchers so I get the best of cuts. Lucky I guess.

Im not sure what a crock is but if its an oven proof dish with a pocketed lid so the foods natural juices fall back down on itself, I couldn't live without mine. Or my casserole dish.

scrimp and save for a pressure cooker

learn how to use it

rice in 5 min

chicken stock in an hour

any tough cut for 35 or 45 min will fall off the bone like butter

you'll save on energy costs too cause you're cooking at much lower heat for a third of the time

Get dried beans - any kind you like - black beans, black eyed peas, navy beans, butter beans. The are cheap. Follow directions on bag. If you soak first, they will cook faster. Can season with some kind of meat, optional, or use some spices from your rack.

Make a big-arse pot of rice.

Will last for a long time, depending on your family size. Or, can freeze the leftovers in freezer bag for lazy night dinner.

Maybe add some sort of bread to fill those little tummies up.

Forgot. Add some hot sauce 'up on there' and a big old glass of iced tea! Awesome.

homemade egg noodles
these are delicious and seem like a luxury to me but they are cheap, easy and versatile.

beat 1 egg. add 1 cup flour and some salt. mix, knead a little, then roll out on floured board and cut them. drop into boiling liquid. cook until tender, about 15 min or so.

Re: GLP Recession Proof Meals - Cooking goes a long way in lieu of buying crap
I grow tomatoes, onion, garlic, basil, lettuce, radishes, beets, kabocha squash, kale, and Swiss chard, on my very small patio sometimes eggplant zucchini or broccoli or cucumbers. Even though its very small and mostly in pots, I can grow a lot of veggies. Tomatoes are the easiest, i grow small cherry sized ones -just stick an organic tomato in the ground and watch it grow! , stick a piece of garlic or onion chice end in the ground and you have garlic and onion chives for a long time. Basil is also easy to grow. Kabocha squash looks like a nice big pumpkin it takes up more room but gives you a couple of nice squashes plus lots of seeds for re-growing or roasting. Potatoes in pots, and lilikoi along fence. Mung beans for sprouts- easy to grow and nutritious sprouts, ginger and turmeric, oregano, hot peppers. My oregano is an Indonesian kind that my neighbor gave me to propagate it grows like craZy easy to grow big leaf and also good for coughs.

Make my own water kefir

Eggs are cheap
Going all or mostly vegetarian can save a lot of money
Beans --cheap and nutritious lentils are the easiest and do not require soaking
rice - cheap and lots of ways to cook
Oatmeal- cheap and nutritious
Pop corn is a cheap snack

Besides that, pantry has only flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, extra Virginia olive oil, coconut oil, sometimes nuts like almonds or pecans, syrup, real chocolate cocoa powder, soy sauce, salt and pepper.

Cocoa powder lasts forever you only need a tiny bit per cup with sugar and milk.

Fridge has milk, soy milk, eggs, mozzarella, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, and cheddar cheese. Get a large package of yeast and keep in the freezer it lasts forever.

I get my bananas from my trees im growing at a community garden nearby.
I get oranges, lemons, limes and papayas or other stuff in season at the farmers market.

From that you can make a LOT of stuff

Make my own juices, popsicles, tortillas, bread, banana bread, lilikoi juice, lilikoi bread, lilikoi ice cream, pancakes, french toast, noodles, pizza dough, practically any sauce can be made with above ingredients, teriyaki, sweet and sour, tomato, alfredo, pesto, curry, ginger, salsa and a lot of different salad dressings, lots of different soups: lentil, tomato, broccoli, squash, potato etc.

I'm vegetarian but family is not. If they crave meat they go to a burger joint once in a while (not Mc Donald's )

I usually eat eggs a couple times a week, lentils once a week, a salad every day, stir fry vegetables with beans and rice or potatoes and a soup or something light for an early dinner. You don't need to eat that much - keep portions small. Fasting once or twice a week is also healthy and cleanses the body. Kids like pizza, noodles or ravioli, enchiladas or quesedillas, and different soups or sandwiches. pancakes and French toast, eggs or oatmeal for breakfast; cottage cheese and fruit for snack or bread or Popsicles.. Popcorn

I hope this inspires someone else to grow their own stuff, cook from scratch more and eat healthier ... it's easier than you think and no additives or preservatives, GMO or other unhealthy crap!

Two teenagers still at home and we've fallen in love with a simple stir fry with rice,we make it two or three times a week at least.Usually dice up chicken, two small breasts is more than enough, add green, red, yellow peppers sliced thin, mushrooms, lots of sliced onions and cook till soft then add a little soya sauce to taste.Simple yet delicious and very good or you.It is just as delish without any meat in it but you could use pork, beef, ham or even bologna I guess.

Re: GLP Recession Proof Meals - Cooking goes a long way in lieu of buying crap
Lot of butter in a large pot, add a head of cabbage shredded and a large sliced red onion and heat very slowly, you don’t want to boil it. You just get it very hot and cover it while stirring once in a while, cook till tender on the slow heat. I normally go about 40 minutes, when it's done turn it off and leave in the pot.

Then take a whole bag of broad egg noodles cook them up but don't over cook the noodles whatever you do, drain and cool.

Then I use caseless sweet sausage; cook it up in a separate skillet and break it in to semi small pieces, don’t drain the sausage, make sure it is thoroughly done. You can use whatever type of sausage you want.

Take the cool noodles in the colander, dump the cooked but undrained sausage over the top of it then mix while the noodles are still in the colander, stir and then dump that in with the already cooked cabbage and onion and stir again. Needs a bit of salt and pepper to taste and will last 4 or 5 days in the fridge easy. It will feed about 8 people very large portions for about 8 to 10 bucks give or take.

More than that it’s a feel good food, upset stomach or someone sick in the house? Simple to digest quick and easy to cook and a lot of energy in a little meal.

You can also use cased sausage and serve it on top of the cabbage noodles but I like the oils mixing in with the noodles, enhances the flavor and keeps the noodles from sticking together.

Base recipe here, but I add to it and change it up.

Re: GLP Recession Proof Meals - Cooking goes a long way in lieu of buying crap
I also make a loaf of white bread every other day.

I just use a good basic recipe that I found on Allrecipes. I wrote down the basic recipe and stuck it on my fridge. Now that I have the hang of it, its so easy. I can make a the dough in literally 5 minutes, and then I just wait an hour to rise and bake for 45 minutes. The only time you're actually working is the 5 minutes at the beginning where you mix the ingredients and knead the dough.

Makes a standard loaf pan size. I use store brand flour I get for $2 for a 5 pound bag.

Total cost of loaf including yeast: 35 cents
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47142807

I have a great tomato basil bread recipe and make it every week. I adjust down 1/3 for my bread maker using really fresh yeast and bread flour. It makes an amazing grill cheese and cuts like a dream. If you've ever tried Panera's- it's identical. I don't buy bread anymore.

1-1/2 cups tomato juice (I prefer a can of paste and compensate the balance with water.)
2 Tbsp. olive oil
4-1/4 cups bread flour
3 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. dry milk
1-1/2 tsp. salt
3-4 tsp. dried basil
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. active dry yeast

Add liquid ingredients first. Add yeast last making a well in the dry ingredients. Cook on light bread setting.

** BTW Thrift stores a loaded with nice, cheap, unused breadmakers. Throw it together and it mixes, kneads and bakes all in one. Just make sure you check the shape of the loaf pan. The best ones are shaped traditionally.

Ok GLP lets teach those on foodstamps how to stretch a dollar & where they dont have to eat potted meat or beefaronis or ramen noodles.

^^^these foods have near no nutritional value and contribute to obesity.

for one - every supermarket must DATE their foods. shop in the store and note the DATE OF EXPIRATION. come back that day of expiration and those meats will be reduced by half or more.

shop at bread stores, where most of the bread is either 2/1.00 or 1.00 a loaf.

ill start off with a few - this will feed a family of 6. and for 2 nights.

remember - this isnt mcnastys where you can "supersize it"....the only thing that will supersize is your waist if you dont cut down on portions.

1.5 lbs ground chicken
one onion chopped.
^^cook til browned & onions tender. drain.
add 8 slices of cheese (or 1 can of campbells cheese soup)
low flame, simmer til cheese is melted.

pkg of wraps.
finely shredded lettus

spoon the meat/cheese into the wrap, add lettus,

makes a crap load. 2 maybe 3 nights worth.

Re: GLP Recession Proof Meals - Cooking goes a long way in lieu of buying crap
Right now red beans and rice are cheap and can be found in most stores (at this time).

These 2 items are a quick and cheap (at this time) meal offering wholesome nutrition.

These 2 items can be bought in bulk (at this time) and both store well if stored in the right manner.

P.I.R.

Red Beans & Rice Nutrition

Red beans and rice is a nutrient-dense food, providing plenty of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals relative to the amount of calories that it contains. To get the most nutrient-packed meal, use brown rice and cook the beans from scratch to minimize sodium content. One cup of red beans and rice, mixed half and half, contains approximately 400 calories.

Carbohydrates and Fiber

One cup of red beans and brown rice mixed half and half has 80 g of carbohydrate and 18 g of fiber, which is about half the desired daily amount of fiber. This large amount of fiber slows the entry of these healthy carbohydrates into the blood stream, thereby blunting any large insulin response. In addition, fiber increases satiety by making you feel fuller and it is linked with a reduction in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and colon cancer.

Protein
One cup of red beans and brown rice mixed half and half has 22 g of protein. Rice and beans are thought of as complementary proteins, meaning that when eaten together they provide all the essential amino acids. Thus even though rice is low in some amino acids and beans are low in others, eaten together their strengths complement each other, providing a complete protein.

Fat
Red beans and rice is a very low fat food, containing only 2 g of fat in every cup. Because of the high fiber content, however, it still tends to provide satiety without the fat. If some healthy fat is desired, olive oil can easily be added and will provide a nice flavor.

Vitamins and Minerals
Beans are a great source of B vitamins, folate, iron, magnesium and potassium. Brown rice is also full of B vitamins, manganese, magnesium and phosphorous, together making the mixture a powerhouse food.

I see alot of really great recipes.

But I tend to think it's not just bad decision making at the supermarket.

I tend to think its just plain laziness when it comes to cooking.

It's easier to buy ready made shit.

Home made cooking, like most domestic talents such as sewing, canning, home repair, etc. have slowly become a forgotten art.

So how do you inspire people to get back to basics?

I agree with your statement. I am fortunate enough to be able to stay at home. I take great pride in making home made meals and I have my 6 and 9 year old children help with preparing almost every meal. Not only do they learn measurements and about different foods, but I think they actually are always willing to try it since they have helped cook it.

My daughter has learned how to knit and crochet because of her grandmothers and I buy crafts that encourage her to learn how to sew. My son loves to help me make applesauce and tomato sauce and they have both had fun making home made candles. It is all about the approach to things.
