More importantly, people need to keep a good water filter stocked and ready to rock. This emergency was only a few days and all of the pipes pumps and power were fine. They just had to flush out a contaminate. I shudder to think what will happen when the power goes out and the water shuts down for a prolonged period. Quoting: Resister Just wondering... where did they flush it to? Will it not just end up in the ground water again? Yep. Just a few feet of earth though does filter out a heck of a lot of bad stuff. Deep wells that are not near surface water runoff should remain safe. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787 |

No it's just Cop's and Firemen are way overpaid in most cities and they vote in blocks with the teacher's union's correction officer's etc etc,the typical firemen will not show up for fires if they get a hint of cut's. You're right, they do. Most of them anyway. But not me. I'm very outspoken when it comes to issues that the union supports and the politicians. I'm very anti obama, anti AFL-CIO and I'm not a supporter of government unions..fire, police, teachers. Yes I'm a member but I don't expect a raise every year, preferential treatment etc.. As a matter of fact, over the past few years the city has closed 1 station with plans of closing 2 more, has cut our pay, lost sick time etc.. I don't consider cops and firemen to be overpaid. I consider sports people and singers and movie stars to be overpaid. An athlete gets paid millions a year to do exactly what they love to do. It's all a matter of putting it into perspective. |

My evenings and weekends are used to volunteer at my local fire dept. Over twenty years and not once during this time did I or others in the volunteer fire company do anything for attention. Realize this every time the fire alarm or the ambulance alarm sounds, someone somewhere is in trouble. It is called giving back to the community. I have yet to receive one penny for the thousands upon thousands alarms I have responded to, nor would I want money. I know there are some in every fire company has the "look at me" attitude, but those are few and far in between and for the most part doesn't last in the volunteer service. I challenge anyone to call your local volunteer company and ask them "What can I do to help?". The sad part is the turnover rate, once they join, the massive amounts of training/schooling will change most minds. Spending every Saturday and Sunday at Fire School, yet no monies are paid. I know locally one is required many, many hours of training even before you can ride a truck. If you are so quick to make the claim "do it for attention", join your local volunteer company. Its a job Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47262350 Have you ever thought it is because they put their life at risk every time they go to a fire? They certainly don't make the money they deserve! Why shouldn't they get the recognition? If i was a fireman i would be humble and expect no thanks. Even if i got burned trying to save someone, i would expect no thanks, and no pity because i choose to risk my life to save these people for my own self worth and have no reason to demand thanks from people for it. Everybody likes to be appreciated. I don't look at it as demanding thanks. I definitely don't pity them, but I do respect what they do. There may be some firefighters who have ego problems, just like anybody, but I know for a fact that isn't all of them. |

You wouldn't be so quick to make judgements on others. Dude, seriously though you're making his argument for him. Volunteer fire-fighters do it for the attention, the career people typically are more humble. Your own post proves it. Ill explain to you how, firstly if a smoke detector comes on, i have a few ways to fight the fire myself before you guys even get there (high pressure extinguisher). Secondly ive seen fires and rarely do the fire department seem to show up after 70% of the thing is a blaze (this helps insurance companies). lastly why would i volunteer for something that wont pay the bills? if im gonna work as a fire-fighter i expect it to pay my bills or at least give the hours and or shifts so i can do that. you dont need that much training to be a fire-fighter just a little common sense of construction, such as if you see the joists above you in flames for fuck sakes, after putting them out dont start pulling at them with hooks (good way to bring a roof down) |
