That cuz Penney's business model sucks....they alienated their core customers when they tried to go upscale and make themselves all boutiquey....that's right...boutiquey...

I can't decide which is worse. 33 stores 2000 jobs, or Targets 110 million customers who private data was stolen. LOL

They alienated their core customers when they tried to sell themselves as upscale but were actually offering inferior quality to what they offered 20 or so years ago.

They have some strange pricing schemes during their sales.

A lot of the clothing is made by slaves in the east.

A few years ago I went to a J.C. Penney in Fargo and ended up liking what they had. Good prices and good selection. I actually spent over $300 there which is totally unheard of for me.
Last year I went back to the same store expecting similar results but discovered that everything went up massively in price and their selection was so boring. I didn't buy a single item there.

There's those green shoots of Economic Progress cropping up again...not!

Next is Sears. And Macy's? Ours is a ghost town and no wonder given their full retail price and bland, boring selection.

If they close 33 stores shouldn't the layoff number be a lot higher than 2000??????????

That's 60 employees a store. Sounds about right to me but maybe not everyone in those 33 stores will get canned. Some may move to other stores or somewhere else in the business.

Never been impressed by their young men's clothing, always bright gay colors, v neck t shirts with the v cut revealing too much, and awkward sizes.

I am a management officer for the JCPenny of Southcenter Mall in Renton, Washington, 98057 USA. I will tell you this confidently. That number should be thirty to forty percent higher. Each JCP store employs minimum of 80-100 employees.

Too bad. Seemed like an okay store until they hired that last whatever-their-title-is person. I noticed they changed how and how much the sales were gonna be. Used to be able to get really nice clothes on sales racks for $1-2 dollars - no joke. These were unadvertised sales.

Went back for some more of that a year or so ago and EVERYTHING had changed.

Gee I can't imagine why they're not doing well. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Target has clothes that are one fifth the price and actually stylish.

Plus Target has stores outside of the mall, so you don't have to go to the fucking mall and walk around a giant department store that is purposefully set up like a maze like a fucking casino to keep you inside longer. It's literally a casino except instead of gambling you buy mom jeans that cost $50 and get perfume sprayed in your face by pretend cougars.

Department stores like JC Penney, Sears, and Macy's are becoming obsolete. I hope they keep a few stores open for a while though because sometimes I like to go and walk around for the nostalgia of it, kind of like a drive-in movie theater, or a 50's diner with fountain soda at the bar.
