Luckily I am stocking up Tuesday. Tomorrow I am culling more roosters, and then I am buying some groceries that I need like sugar. flour, yeast and other things. Going to make a great meal Wednesday. Maybe even some home made peanut butter fudge. Better get everything done and in the deep freeze before we lose power during a cold snap. Luckily though I can still cook during a power outage. I have gas stove. Lights however are the issue, and if I can't see what I am cooking it wont be good. Quoting: pmb1 Get several bags of tea-lights. These little candles throw out a RIDICULOUS amount of light. Also...old fashioned candelabras can be had at tag-sales and consignment for a few dollars. Cheap taper candles (also at tag sales/consignment) are easy to come by. We have electric power tonight but have on superbowl and the room is lit only by candles and it is BRIGHT! Stock up on the economical candles and you will be ok to cook that yummy stuff :) |

Should I keep going? Cold spells happen every few years. It's called VARIABILITY. The weather isn't going to be the same or 'normal' every year. Some years will be warmer than usual, some years will be colder than usual, some years will be wetter than usual, some years will by drier than usual. Last winter was unseasonably warm for most of the south. At my house it never got below 20 degrees all January last year. Already this year we've been in the single digits on 3 separate nights. That's just how the weather works. December 1951 was a very cold deep drifting snow winter. So was 1954. Pffft! Totally correct! My all-time temp memory was 56 below zero in 1963 (no that's not wind chill. We didn't know about wind chill then. That was the thermometer temperature! My husband had to go to work on a oil rig that day!! (Minimum wage: $1.15 per hour) Crazy damn oil workers. We've had several events at or below -50 since then. (Eastern Montana.) Excuse me for saying but you guys are bad-asses over there. I love it!!! :) |

SilverPatriot User ID: 39491380 United States 01/19/2014 10:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Its illegal to feed the deer in Nys no matter how deep the snow gets. Nor can you feed the homeless. I stated that it was winter and cold and snow are to be expected and I will add regardless of what the left clamors about global warming. It is illegal to feed the deer in any state due to the deer version of mad cow disease or even rabies because feeding in confined areas means drawing in healthy and unhealthy animals to feed in confined areas thus exposing healthy animals to diseases. The illegality of feeding the homeless is due to New York State desiring to negate the problem and seek to scoot those unable or unwilling to enter the government dependent class system to collect their “benefits” to other areas. |

But, the reason is, I am so dependant on modern things like the furnace and my car. If the power goes out, I have no heat, and I have to worry the pipes will freeze. I have to hope my car starts and I can make it through the snow and ice to my job. It is a lot of added stress. But, I suppose, if I lived in a housing project. With checks coming in without me having to show up at a job. With someone else to worry about the heat. Man I could just stay in and party. That would be sweet. |

Normally I use the solar lights for the kids at night time they help a lot around here if the power goes off. It use to be that we could run a portable TV off a car battery but now with the stupid boxes they have, you can't do that any more. |

If you think all these weather caused disasters are normal I really do not know what to tell you. In 2013 over 880 extreme weather events cost about $125 billion around the world. I have lived in California all my life - 55 years. We have never had this lack of rain - ever. Today we drove with our convertible top down with weather like the middle of summer happening. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. I am also a photographer and was out taking photos today of flowers at Jack London Square today that are blooming 3-4 months early. The plants and trees are confused. Our roses never stopped blooming - I have roses blooming in our backyard now. We never had winter this year. In summer we had rain and some storms. I have never seen that - EVER. Our climate has changed - permanently. "She is Creative" |

I heard about that terra-cotta heater idea and thought it was a good one! However, for temps that are -10 no windchill...not sure it would help a lot. :( At that point, you really just need a wood-stove. I was actually responding to the poster who was saying it would not be possible to see enough to cook once the lights went out. I never had that issue because I feel the tealights put out a lot of light! And the candelaba too. But I understand what a huge hazzard that is with little children around. For you guys, I suggest head lamps! And stay warm wherever you may be! :) |
