I think they may have liked him when he first took power back in 1969. His predecessor may have not been a very good leader and the people naturally assumed that whoever got rid of him would be better. People always make that blunder in revolutions. The same thing happened in Iran when the hated Shah was replaced by the ayatollah who turned out to be a dreadful tyrant. The Libyan people turned against Gaddafi when they realized that he was not their liberator but just another tyrant. The same error may be repeated now, unfortunately. With Gaddafi gone, will another tyrant, probably an Islamic militant, replace him? Things aren't going too well in Iraq right now, and Libya may well follow. |
