Alabama snow impact by the numbers--5 Dead, 23 injured on roads and 3500 students sheltered at school
[link to blog.al.com]

So far, five people have been killed as a result of the storm, the report said, although no casualties have yet been reported for Jefferson or Shelby counties

The Situation Report's estimates may initially be low.

----

Just so you know this was nothing to laugh about. At least by the weekend, the ice and snow will all be gone as warming is on the way if only for a couple of days.

I was just wondering when someone was gonna put something up about the Great Blizzard of 2014. It wasn't so much the weather that was the problem. It was the forecast. NWS really screwed the pooch on this one, and kids all across central Alabama had to spend the night at school. Took me 2 hours to drive 4 miles home from the office yesterday, and I thought we might have to get out and walk at one point. Still, hell of a lot better than all those folks who had to sleep in their cars. Everybody okay at your house, BB?

Fine here, thanks, RevBo. I have Netflix and sweet red wine and am warm and cozy. I don't do cold and don't have to go out any more so it was pretty good here except for the extreme cold and lousy heat pump.

My youngest is in B'ham and goes to several hospitals/treatment facilities making rounds and I don't know what happened with him as he is not answering his cell. Lives by Summit Mall so just hope he made it somewhere or sheltered in place at one of the hospitals.

Maybe he will call tonight. All the stalled and abandoned cars are still making a mess.

Blame this one on the weatherman!

Hope your son's okay. hf

It could just be the cellular network that he's on. My Verizon has been in and out since 11 yesterday when TS first HTF.

Spann is still the best tv meteorologist around. He did say the forcast was variable. Meanwhile all is peaceful on the Coosa. It really was a nice snow. Hope y'all get dug out and that your loved ones stay safe.

Is that you, son?

LOL! Is there any way to come in through the back of the mall? Maybe park back there and walk to the apartments?

Guess I'll try to phone him some more in that case.

How cold is it down there tonight?

My kid doesn't have 4 WD and I suspect is wearing only a lightweight windbreaker as I don't think he even has his heavy coat down there.

Ah, mothers do worry. Guess it's our job.

Yes, I checked and it's 18º now and will go down to 15º so I hope water mains will be OK as they are not buried that deeply that far south.

Roads are frozen and it's 20 degrees now and still dropping here around Lake Martin area. Schools are closed tomorrow for Alexander city and Tallapoosa County tomorrow. I believe the roads are still closed and will be opening around 10 or 11 tomorrow morning.

Stranded students spend second night in classrooms

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WAFF) -
Governor Bentley said the 200+ students who spent the night at their schools Tuesday will do so again Wednesday night.
. . .

Search and rescue operations continue to ensure no one on the interstates or side roads are still trapped inside their vehicles. They are not certain if they have attended to everyone. Crews are working around the clock to clear the roads.

But we tolerate the 110º heat indices in the summer. The deal was if we do that, we don't have to do this.

Actually a lot of that was ice and things did NOT shut down in time resulting in people being stranded on the roads trying to get home as the temp dropped drastically and very fast freezing everything into a sheet of ice.
