Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
My friend just went through this exact same scam. Her mystery man was a sergeant in the US army. He was nice and supportive for the first month, then he needed money to get his son out of the hospital. A business man that has no access to a diital camera should be a red flag.

Your aunt will be foolish and send this trash money. People are just too needy to see past it. I had to tell my friend at least 20 times to stop contact. She really tought it was love. Thos world is getting so bad now it is hard to watch anymore. I pray your aunt wakes up. You are a good person to be so concerned. He could be a nice man, but tell her to get his US contact details and watch him then.

Everyone is just looking for love and companionship.
I never realized how low lonely people are!
It's really hard to reason when the emotions are open and down and wrapped up into something that is obviously something that is a dead end.
Emotions are scary and real life blind spots.
How did your friend handle it once she woke up?

For the record he hasn't asked for money YET..
I'm still waiting for that text from her that says he's finally asked.

I'm over it though.
She has that "ding-dong" bell in her gut. So, I know she's not going to be blind.
If not then i'll bring her back to reality along with me and the rest of my family. chuckle

Married. If he wants to convince her of who he is, he should give her his Driver's License number, name and address so she can do a light background check on him (court stuff, law suits such as divorce). Married men who haven't been laid in a decade will do anything for a sexual connection with another woman whom he finds appealing. Sex on the mind of the modern man will be considered a contributing factor to our fall. They are overstimulated with sexual subliminal advertising.
Had a dream long ago which showed me the future and it was not pretty. Been watching closely ever since.

It's usually a red flag is either one is pushing to be "mushy" too soon. Looks like several red flags in your post. Why not take time to get to know each other with emails and phone calls before meeting in real life? Make sure if she does meet him to do it in a public place. Very public, preferably with cameras.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50634832

I'm trying to discourage her from meeting him so soon.
I say that if she DOES.. then she needs to have her family there.
He said he's willing to meet us, but honestly that doesn't put me at ease.
 Quoting: gracebear

Scam artist. They say they don't want money and he'll tell her to be careful with people online....that there are many you can't trust. All the while, he is a scammer. He says he wants to meet her, but he wont have the money, so she'll have to help him out and send him money.

He has no intention of meeting her. He just wants money!

Does he call her sweetie, honey, or love and not by her first name? That's because he doesn't know it. He's writing and talking to many other women, so he doesn't even know her name.

Google "Dating site scammers/scams" or "Nigerian scammers."

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
Listen: THis is almost EXACTLY what happened with my close friend, though she met him on POF. He convinced her that he was originally from our area- a doctor in Africa - that was coming home in a couple of months.

Right away started talking about 'settling down' and marriage. She is very overweight with terrible self-esteem and she believed him, much to the urging of myself and our other friends not to.

Then, excuse after excuse about why he couldn't make it: missed the plane, emergency where he lived, etc. Then, one day he tells her to have fun on her vacation with her son. She tells him she isn't going on vacation. He has a screen shot of a conversation (that he thought was with her) of another girl who was talking about going on vaction with her son.

My friend sent a message to the other girl, just asking if she knew him. The other girl said, yes, we are engaged. Who are you? My friend and the girl compared notes and pics- same guy, no other people or identifiable backgrounds. Obvious generic model type pics.

They notified POF who said they were already well aware of this person (from photo) and that profiles keep popping up. The other girl had sent him $. Thankfully, my friend never did. He disappeared (from her) after the mistake with my friend.

It is a terrible commentary on society that we prey on those most vulnerable. My friend was heartbroken to identify herself as a 'victim'. She realized that he saw her as not having lots of options. It was cruel- regardless of money.

Just do a background check with the social security number. You can do it on umpteen sites online. Will cost a few bucks, but then you'll know if the name he gave and number match up. Plus those background checks will show criminal history, credit history, social networking, you name it

I've seen the gullible women on there before...they lost their life's savings. I missed yesterday's show because Dr. Phil's entire program was preempted by CBS Philly reporting on Philadelphia's snow report! One hour of residents photos of snow and traffic reports. It is so stupid, because the snow occurred on Tuesday! That news was on from 4-5, (Phil starts at 4) then more of the same news continued from 5-6:30!

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
My aunt hasn't had the best choice in men. She's in her 60's and wants to find love. She is kind hearted and trustworthy I just don't want her to get hurt.

She gets on Facebook and some guy from a 50's and older dating website messages her.
They've been talking for 3 weeks.
He claims that he is an engineer contractor? and has been in business almost 20 years.
She tells me he is already wanting to meet her family and is being "mushy" too soon. He tells her he doesn't want anything from her just companionship.
He says he's in Africa on business and when he comes back in a month he would like to plan a meeting.
Also, she has received 3 pictures from him.
I took a look at the pictures and it looks like they were taken off someone else's facebook.

She has been asking him for a picture but says he doesn't have any way of taking one because he doesn't have a phone.
To prove his identity to her, he gave her his "social security number".
He told her to verify it so she can see it's him.
Now, I'm no genius, but I do know that a SSN is very important.
I'd say any business man who has about 20+ of accounts and money would not just fork over a SSN to prove himself. That was a big RED flag to me. Anyone can dummy up a SSN.

I'm not sure. I've shared my opinion with her, but I don't want her to be so blindsided that she just falls for this guy who she's not even sure if his profile picture matches the person he's talking to.

Any advice on how to verify this guy??

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
He's probably a Nigerian scam artist. I have a friend in her late 50's that fell for one. She told me how she had fallen in love with the guy. That he wrote such lovely letters, that he was an engineer working overseas and she showed me his picture.

Ding, Ding, Ding - warning bells. Tge picture of the guy showed a man way too good looking to be interested in my friend. She's cute but this guy was gorgeous.

She kept on and on about how she was falling in love with him. I said ask for his phone number. I think all along she knew it couldn't be for real but was feeling so good about herself and the dream of it all, that she didn't want to see the reality of it all.

Well, she did get his phone number -- I looked it up and it was based in Nigeria. She called the number and the guy who answered sounded African - not like white South African but like Nigerian African and he seem perturbed and like he didn't really know her.

She put in snippets of his emails into google and found identical wording -- it was a scam. She got off easy with a broken heart based on false trust.

But recently I saw a Dr. Phil show where a women did the same think - but she send over $250,000 the guy! Dr. Phil had her call him and when he answered he called her 'babe' - something they do for all the marks so as not to get names mixed up. He played like he was hurt that she did not tell him she was going on the Dr. Phil show and that he would think about flying over but he was hurt. She actually swallowed it - she got made but then cried because she felt like she had let him down (her daughter and son-in-law had set the Dr. Phil meeting up initially). Although she said in the end she realized she was duped, you could tell she was still 'in love' with the fantasy of it all. I just hope she like your aunt comes to her senses.

When you are in love, you don't ask for money but you make every attempt to meet the person and spend as much time as possible talking and being with them -- it is that simple.

I have a friend who works at a cashland-like payday loans/pawn, she says every so often a woman comes in wanting to Western-Union money to her 'husband' overseas who need money. My friend delicately questioned the woman about it because she suspected what was really going on. Poor woman/women - they just keep getting duped.
