Wait until he gets back to the States and ask him for a picture then. Even if he doesn't have a phone, how hard could it be to find someone who does or have a digital camera?

Ask him to take a picture holding a piece of paper with your aunt's name on it.

Until then, tell your aunt not to get too wrapped up with talking to him.

THIS!
I had suggested the SAME thing.
Hold a paper with her name or a heart or some thing you can't really fake or photoshop to well.

She posed the same question.
If you have all this money, you'd think you'd have at least a decent phone or laptop.

I don't know something does not sit right here.

Online daters, be warned! 1 in 10 profiles are scams, report reveals

"...The scam typically works like this: A con artist, usually based in an Internet cafe overseas, will lift a photo from Facebook or another social networking site. They will painstakingly craft a fake profile and begin targeting people that are looking for love.

Once they’ve made contact, they will typically request to move the conversation to a private instant messaging service. He or she will begin the courtship process by sending letters and love poems for a period of weeks and finally offer to fly to meet their victim. Within hours of the expected arrival time, an emergency will strike: A work visa has expired, or their aunt/niece/child is sick and they need a few thousand dollars to be wired over so they can finally meet their intended...."

The aunt needs to try a church group, or something designed for seniors. I think Meetup.com even has groups for older people.

Oh no! My friend spent months online with the same story two years ago. He's on business in Africa. Then he's in Britain. Then he says he is coming to visit for a couple days to meet. Then his plane is delayed. Then his wallet is stolen and he needs a one ticket to come n visit. Then he asks her to buy it. ... Its a stinkin NIGERIAN . He talked to her on the phone with a beautiful British accent. He's an African and will never leave Africa. He a Black CON artist.

Suspect you may dealing with a Nigerian scammer? Here is a wonderful list compiled by the Romancescams Yahoo group. Not all signs on this list are equally alerting and not all of them necessarily mean scam, but if he/she generally fits the pattern, it is most likely scam!

They might be a scammer if...

- Their profile picture looks professionally done and can be found on a modeling website FocusHawaii.com, NewFaces.com, Q6.com, TheModelMax.com, BlackCuties.com, PerspectivePhotography.com to name a few

- Their height/weight is not proportional -e.g. 6' and 95 lbs

- They claim to have blonde hair and blues eyes when the picture is dark hair and brown eyes or vice versa

- They have a wedding ring on the photo yet they claim to be single

- They claim to be Native American or some other ethnicity when the photo is Caucasian

- They claim to be older/younger than the photo looks

- Their specified age range seems to have no limit-e.g. 25-60

- They have weird usernames containing "4real" or "4luv"

- Their first names are also weird, like Martins, Williams, Kevins, Waynes, etc... (instead of Martin, William, Kevin, Wayne)

- The women names are often misspelled, like Jenifer instead of Jennifer, Ashly instead of Ashley, or Marry instead of Mary.

- Their last names are usually Cole, Moore, Smith or Williams

Email Address:

Example: [email protected]

- They say they are "XX by name" and "XX by age"

- They say "am" instead of "I am", for example: "am Williams by name..."

- Their photos are rotated 45 degrees

- They say they are from Keller, VA. Why? Because it has the same zip code as Nigeria: 23401

- Their occupation is often "building contractor" or "petroleum engineer" for men and "model" for women

- Their introductory letter often contains the phraze: "Remeber the distance or colour does not matter but love matters alot in life." (typical for Senegal scammers)

- They immediately want to get off the website and onto Yahoo IM or MSN IM

rest of list at: [link to www.datingnmore.com]

a general rule: if you're talking to ANYONE who is in Africa, even if you see them on webcam (they use videos of other victims), it's a scammer.

Hi grace.

hf

Be careful there is a lot of internet dating scams out there. It sounds like your aunt has run into one of those for sure. I am almost completely certain from what you posted. Most vulnerable people I think are those not as familiar with the net.

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
My aunt hasn't had the best choice in men. She's in her 60's and wants to find love. She is kind hearted and trustworthy I just don't want her to get hurt.

She gets on Facebook and some guy from a 50's and older dating website messages her.
They've been talking for 3 weeks.
He claims that he is an engineer contractor? and has been in business almost 20 years.
She tells me he is already wanting to meet her family and is being "mushy" too soon. He tells her he doesn't want anything from her just companionship.
He says he's in Africa on business and when he comes back in a month he would like to plan a meeting.
Also, she has received 3 pictures from him.
I took a look at the pictures and it looks like they were taken off someone else's facebook.

She has been asking him for a picture but says he doesn't have any way of taking one because he doesn't have a phone.
To prove his identity to her, he gave her his "social security number".
He told her to verify it so she can see it's him.
Now, I'm no genius, but I do know that a SSN is very important.
I'd say any business man who has about 20+ of accounts and money would not just fork over a SSN to prove himself. That was a big RED flag to me. Anyone can dummy up a SSN.

I'm not sure. I've shared my opinion with her, but I don't want her to be so blindsided that she just falls for this guy who she's not even sure if his profile picture matches the person he's talking to.

Any advice on how to verify this guy??
 Quoting: gracebear

What will end up happening is the guy will end up being stuck in Africa and try to extort money out of her.. I heard it happened to some gullible lady on the radio and the guy took her for like 300k..

Never Send Money, Never send your ID, never let him take pictures of you naked on Skype etc.... never let them have your contacts on facebook or MSM. A girlfriend of mine was asked to send money to Nigeria otherwise he will send a video of her naked to all her contacts.

These guys are crooks. You will never see them on skype for real (only videos posted on skype where they will not interact with you.).

My friend just went through this exact same scam. Her mystery man was a sergeant in the US army. He was nice and supportive for the first month, then he needed money to get his son out of the hospital. A business man that has no access to a diital camera should be a red flag.

Your aunt will be foolish and send this trash money. People are just too needy to see past it. I had to tell my friend at least 20 times to stop contact. She really tought it was love. Thos world is getting so bad now it is hard to watch anymore. I pray your aunt wakes up. You are a good person to be so concerned. He could be a nice man, but tell her to get his US contact details and watch him then.

Then be sure to keep in touch with auntie. Find any common interest. Fill the empty space. With anything. Cute cat. Dark conspiracies. Whatever. Its the communication she will miss.
