Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
He's probably a Nigerian scam artist. I have a friend in her late 50's that fell for one. She told me how she had fallen in love with the guy. That he wrote such lovely letters, that he was an engineer working overseas and she showed me his picture.

Ding, Ding, Ding - warning bells. Tge picture of the guy showed a man way too good looking to be interested in my friend. She's cute but this guy was gorgeous.

She kept on and on about how she was falling in love with him. I said ask for his phone number. I think all along she knew it couldn't be for real but was feeling so good about herself and the dream of it all, that she didn't want to see the reality of it all.

Well, she did get his phone number -- I looked it up and it was based in Nigeria. She called the number and the guy who answered sounded African - not like white South African but like Nigerian African and he seem perturbed and like he didn't really know her.

She put in snippets of his emails into google and found identical wording -- it was a scam. She got off easy with a broken heart based on false trust.

But recently I saw a Dr. Phil show where a women did the same think - but she send over $250,000 the guy! Dr. Phil had her call him and when he answered he called her 'babe' - something they do for all the marks so as not to get names mixed up. He played like he was hurt that she did not tell him she was going on the Dr. Phil show and that he would think about flying over but he was hurt. She actually swallowed it - she got made but then cried because she felt like she had let him down (her daughter and son-in-law had set the Dr. Phil meeting up initially). Although she said in the end she realized she was duped, you could tell she was still 'in love' with the fantasy of it all. I just hope she like your aunt comes to her senses.

When you are in love, you don't ask for money but you make every attempt to meet the person and spend as much time as possible talking and being with them -- it is that simple.

I have a friend who works at a cashland-like payday loans/pawn, she says every so often a woman comes in wanting to Western-Union money to her 'husband' overseas who need money. My friend delicately questioned the woman about it because she suspected what was really going on. Poor woman/women - they just keep getting duped.

It may be a horrible thing to say but how can these women be so stupid?
I have never heard of a man falling for this scam. Usually the woman scam artist marries the guy and then has a kid then wants a divorce and half of everything else.
These women seem to give away $10000's to people they have never met and have only seen in a photo.

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
I have an older girlfriend who picked up a man on an on-line dating site. He moved in with her and soon was telling the neighbors that he wanted to marry her but that he hoped she would die so that he could inherit her stuff. The men got together and went to her house and told him to pack up and leave. Soon afterwards, he was back on the dating site with a picture of him in front of her nice, big house, claiming it was his!

I say trust your gut. If it doesn't feel right, it's not!

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
My dear friend got scammed by one of these. She had no money so borrowed 400 to send her "British medical assistant" for a plane trip to get here for the "wedding." She also got her stepdad to buy a dress, 200 more, and set up the service at the church. She had been talking to (someone) on the phone for a few months, he told her he used to live in her city, worked at a place she was familiar with and was going to get re-hired there when he got back from "England."
She sent me a pic when I first heard about it, I told her it was a model from the web but she was not listening.
All those emails and calls and scams for 400 bucks.
Prayer aint gonna help her common sense, get her out to the Sr. center or something.

Wow, at least it was only 400.00.
I bet she was heartbroken.
It's tough when emotions run high in areas like this.
Did she talk her self into them getting married?? After a few months that's pretty short to be talking marriage.
I'm curious which model was it?

My friend was just way too lonely, inside on the computer all the time, in her 40s.
She says he talked her into a Baptist church wedding.
The guy looked like he was in a barn or something, light blue shirt, dark blond wavy hair over ears, cafe au lait skin, blue jeans, late 20s to early 30s, just some model-looking guy. I knew in a minute it wasn't a family anapshot, lol.
She was mostly stunned, I would say. Unfortunately, she tried online dating once more, the guy had her come visit, then came out to actually stay at her place, he was a complete nut, pentagrams, ceremonial knives, robes, etc. I went to her place after he was tossed out; he was stalking her online but she changed her addresses. It took an hour for me to help her toss out all the dark carp he had her buy!
She's been single again now these last 8 years, sorry to say.

The hell?-- Pentagrams.. He was probably thinking about sacrificing the poor girl. Well at least you stepped in.
How did you toss him out? Lol.. just lay down the law and said GTFO!
I really feel bad for lonely people who are just lacking in that area.

My aunt hasn't had the best choice in men. She's in her 60's and wants to find love. She is kind hearted and trustworthy I just don't want her to get hurt.

She gets on Facebook and some guy from a 50's and older dating website messages her.

She tells me he is already wanting to meet her family and is being "mushy" too soon. He tells her he doesn't want anything from her just companionship.
He says he's in Africa on business and when he comes back in a month he would like to plan a meeting.
Also, she has received 3 pictures from him.
I took a look at the pictures and it looks like they were taken off someone else's facebook.

She has been asking him for a picture but says he doesn't have any way of taking one because he doesn't have a phone.
To prove his identity to her, he gave her his "social security number".
He told her to verify it so she can see it's him.
Now, I'm no genius, but I do know that a SSN is very important.
I'd say any business man who has about 20+ of accounts and money would not just fork over a SSN to prove himself. That was a big RED flag to me. Anyone can dummy up a SSN.

I'm not sure. I've shared my opinion with her, but I don't want her to be so blindsided that she just falls for this guy who she's not even sure if his profile picture matches the person he's talking to.

Any advice on how to verify this guy??
 Quoting: gracebear

Definitely red flags about this guy from Africa. Claiming to have no phone while on "business" in Africa is definitely RED FLAG.

Could also use a forged SSN to fool your aunt.

Tell your aunt to dump that guy and save her the hassles. Stick with the locals in her area, not someone from far-off places.

Thanks for the eggscelent karma.. lol as far as the Aussie, there's nothing really I can do. I don't talk to him anymore.

I also talked to the poster you are talking about, on another thread.
He's a very angry person who seems to get-off by annoying others.Possible mental health issues?
It was me who posted the green saying "watch out."
Be careful and always "watch out" for people that make you feel uneasy. Gut instinct is a ESP feeling that has helped me in the past.

My main thing is I'm tired of hearing about him. I closed that communication. There hasn't been any contact since.
BUT it is nice to know that there are people vigilante and aware.
hf Thanks.
How is your saturday going?

Good!
I'm just going to the gym and then back home to study.
Have a great weekend and keep an eye on your aunt.

Re: My aunt is being woo'd by a man she met online... Here's the story. Tell me what you think!
My step grandmother was involved in something almost exactly like this. A man sent her a picture who looked just like the Dos Equis guy...completely fake but she just couldn't see past it. He said he was some kind of contractor or some crap, and that he was helping poor children in Africa and building homes for them. He would talk on the phone to her but when other people wanted to talk to him or when she wanted to talk to him around her family he was always busy or away. Eventually he wanted money for airfare. She realized it was a scam and ended up with a broken heart....classic scam OP. Tell your aunt to block him, block his number, everything!!
Sorry about your aunt :( It's really a sad situation :(

Oh no! My friend spent months online with the same story two years ago. He's on business in Africa. Then he's in Britain. Then he says he is coming to visit for a couple days to meet. Then his plane is delayed. Then his wallet is stolen and he needs a one ticket to come n visit. Then he asks her to buy it. ... Its a stinkin NIGERIAN . He talked to her on the phone with a beautiful British accent. He's an African and will never leave Africa. He a Black CON artist.
