I am in the house with my family. Warm. Plenty of food and water. Plenty of alternative means of cooking, heating, etc. one good thing is most of our immediate power infrastructure is underground. Now, if a substation goes out that is another matter.

I know that a lot of folks laugh at Atlanta and snow, but you have to understand, we don't have the equipment in place to deal with these types of situations. These situations are infrequent enough that they don't feel like the expenditure is justified.

This has the potential to be worse than part 1, as it is going to be, at least partially, an ice storm. I have the capability to work from home, so I will be good.

Yesterday at walmart, there was no bread, no bananas, and no water. Literally. Had to laugh, people were insane. I went this morning since we in the Kennesaw/Marietta area haven't had any accumulation yet, and the bananas were stocked back up. Bread was half stocked and milk was super low.

I lived in Marietta and Woodstock.......

On the TV tonight on TWC they were commenting on how bad it was going to be in those areas and Kennesaw....that would be Canton too I imagine.
 Quoting: JasmineinNM

I'm in Marietta also. We are all set with our preps but have a ton of trees in the yard and around the house which makes me nervous.

Gonna say the same thing I said on another thread.
You idiots calling us pussies..
its the ICE. We are forecast for one inch of ice and 3 of snow/sleet.
One inch is a shit ton of weight on trees and lines.
Besides the slick ice roads you have obstacles everywhere you go.

Likewise!

And as I stated during the last storm, if it weren't for GLP, we would never have been prepared. We were and it paid off. And here we are again and I'm sitting well prepared.

Drove thru Atlanta last week at 3am. VERY much ice. But easy driving if you have new tires and do not jerk the wheel.
I'd say drive as far as you can but bring blankets and food cause you may have to pull off the road for a spell.
(And then Disney was 85 degrees :-)

Miami, Ohio, or Miami Florida?

if Florida, above poster is correct, except there may not be any flights.

I really want to go as soon as I can. Cancelling the trip altogether isn't an option.. But I do have until next Thursday off of work.. I can wait a day or so..

I'm trying to debate if I leave now and get to atlanta in 8 hours or wait until what time.. but if theyre saying this could be over a week maybe i should just cut through west of atlanta using US 1 / GA 27 if that would be the invevitable option later? Or even further west....?

The trip is not an option.. I just need to know the best way to do it

I think you SOL now. North Georgia already has some freezing precip. From what I gather. We have nothing right now in kennesaw/Marietta, but its coming in a couple hours.

Btw, at this time of night, it doesn't matter which you take.

Re: Atlanta Snowmageddon 2014: Part Deux!!!!
Live in MN. Never have used chains on my tires. We also frequently get the whole ice under snow thing here. We have to deal with icy roads in the cities even when it doesn't snow because it is cold enough to freeze exhaust and cause black ice. One of my cars has almost bald tires and I can still get through the snow and ice. Remember ice melts with salt. Unless your temps are below zero which I doubt they are. It is really effective.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4943077

I grew up on those Minnesota roads. What you fail to realize is that even in the worst rush hour traffic the Twin Cities has, it's a drop in the bucket compared to Atlanta traffic. I lived in Atlanta for ten years. There is one main loop, a connector running north and south (which splits into 75/85 as you get to the edge of town), and one main road going east and west (20). Once you get a sheet of ice on that, people go flying every which way and the traffic comes to a complete stop for miles. There are no alternative routes.

I live in Wichita now, but let me tell you that Wichita has more major roadways than Atlanta, which has merely added lanes to the existing roads over the decades rather than building new ones as demand called for. Poor planning and even worse management.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45485322

I think what most people on this tread are failing to realize is that the words being thrown out there in the media and by politicians is a bit absurd. I get the point that Atlanta driving is worse and I have driven through there many times in my life. My mother in-law used to live there. With that said I do not think this is worthy of being called a catastrophic event or state of emergency.

Yes there is one main loop that has two to three times the amount of lanes that the largest highway in the TC area has. Last time I checked we only have one loop here as well.

Also to the other wise one who tried to make a point and used the term "multiple cars" then said what he meant is that there are more cars in Atl.. Seriously nice revision of intent. I guess by your logic that means there is a singular car in MN.. Ugh!! C'mon

I will take pics of my tires if I can get a chance to take a daytime shot, just to prove my point cause you know us northerners love to exaggerate. That statement clearly disproves my point... right?? But claiming I am exaggerating. I might as well just claim you are an idiot to refute your point if you want to take it to that level of critical thinking.

The entire South is getting slammed right now and according to the Weather Channel this is moving east and north up the coast. Specifically Washington D.C. will be hit later tonight and thru tomorrow morning.

Made me think - does anyone on GLP admit to being from the D.C. area?

Anyone in the path of this storm who has the time and ability - prepare and take heed of what others have posted here and on other threads.

D.C., Philly, Boston....

Ok, yes we have "ice" on the roads. Catastrophic? Not even close. Trees barely have ice on them here in the kennesaw area.
