Need to build a gigantic wall up north and keep the vortexes up in Canada! Maybe we could build a gigantic fan down south to blow the warm air up north!

I hate cold weather (below 40). If I never saw snow and ice again I would be happy.

I mist drive to Miami from nw Ohio tomorrow, could leave tonight if necessary. Should I stay on 75, take 285 or is there a safer route?

If you can make it through Atlanta before 1-3 am tonight, you may stand a chance. Temp's not supposed to get below 35 til well after that.

I'd advise you to cancel the trip, in the interest of your safety.

Live in MN. Never have used chains on my tires. We also frequently get the whole ice under snow thing here. We have to deal with icy roads in the cities even when it doesn't snow because it is cold enough to freeze exhaust and cause black ice. One of my cars has almost bald tires and I can still get through the snow and ice. Remember ice melts with salt. Unless your temps are below zero which I doubt they are. It is really effective.

I like Frankie and applaud his desire to try and inform people of weather dangers.

Off Topic, does anyone else think Frankie could make a fortune selling an alarm clock application for devices?
"Wake up sleep head! It's time to get up! Get out of bed and put your slippers on! Go take a shower and make your breakfast! Take the dog out! If you have a dog! Make sure you turned off the stove! et cetera..."

But I digress...

I went out and prepared for this storm on Sunday (and I am glad I did, I was running lower than I like on camping propane cylinders).

Be safe everyone!

As with most things in life there is really no good substitute for experience. I live in a rural location and have to leave my house early to commute to the city, often before the plows can get the roads cleared if it snowed overnight.

Bully for you!

However, the reality of physics will tell you that multiple vehicles in motion on ice will (and in fact does) very highly increase the probability of said vehicles colliding with both each other and various surrounding objects.

Of course the presence of ice will increase the chances of people colliding due to loss of traction caused by the ice. Thank you for stating the obvious. What is not so obvious is that if you know how to dive on the ice and leave proper distance between you and the vehicles in front of you you can avoid the vast majority of collisions. If you drive the same way on ice that you would in normal conditions then you will for sure end up with a crippling amount of traffic issues.

i have family in north metro atlanta and they cancelled her school monday thru at least thursday. I used to live in ATL and things do shut down with any snow.

The problem they have is no equipment salt/sand for the roads so things ice over every night during these cold snaps.

they can get some wicked freezing rain that makes an ice rink out of everything. plus its plenty hilly around atlanta to make things worse.

Almost bald tires on ice? That is just a freakin joke.

Depending on the vehicle, an experienced driver can take almost bald through snow or slush, as long as there is no serious incline. Thats it.

Rock salt loses ALL effectiveness at 15 degrees F. Fact. If calcium chloride is added, it lowers the freezing point of water even more, but very few if any cities can afford CaCl.

Re: Atlanta Snowmageddon 2014: Part Deux!!!!
I am not sure if it has already been said, but..keep your taps dripping, if you are on city water, so your pipes may not freeze, if the power does go out.

Camping stoves are great, but I learned this ice storm in December that propane tanks do not always work in extreme cold. My parents who were out for 10 days, no water or power were unable to chip all the ice of the BBQ to cook, so I brought over my camp stove. The propane tank would not work because of how cold it was. Make sure you have an emergency back up portable stove that uses another source of fuel.

If the power goes out for a long time, really try to keep yourself warm. So many people got sick here because they were not used to living in a cold environment for such a long time.

Charge up your solar powered garden lights, they work great for light indoors, it will help you save on batteries and candles.

You will be seeing a lot more of those terms in the future too. NOAA/NWS decided a couple years back to use more graphic language in describing storms and damaging effects.

They usually save it for tornado season, but I guess they saw how much Georgia dropped the ball with the last winter storm.

Yep you got me.. It is super human to drive in snowy and icy conditions, must not be possible cause some people with less experience say they cannot. The reason most people cannot do the sort of things that Olympic athletes do is similar and has a lot to do with the fact that most have not been practicing and honing their skills since an early age. The saying practice makes perfect exists for a reason.

There is nothing wrong with someone admitting that they have a harder time doing something because they have a lack of experience. People in the south in general have less experience driving in these conditions and are therefore less equip to deal with it regardless of salt or un-salted roads. There are plenty of things that other people can do better than me because they are more experienced.

Also a fact that the forecast low in Atlanta is 28 degrees F which is well above your 15 degree non sequitur.

Objects in motion tend to stay in motion.... Yes if you tried to get up an icy hill from a standstill with bald tires you would need to lay down a lot of kitty litter. Once you are at highway speeds you can get up hills.
