Drums of low level waste are piled up in stacks underground and one of the working theories right now is that a big slab of the roof broke free, hit the stack, knocked some drums off and smashed and opened one or more of them.

Joe Franco, manager of the DOE Carlsbad Field Office, said an underground air monitor detected high levels of alpha and beta radiation activity consistent the waste buried at WIPP. Federal and state agencies are scrambling to deal with the discovery of airborne radiation inside the waste storage tunnels five days ago.

While the tunnels are underground, the radiation has been detected above ground, too. DEADLY WARNING from Potrblog 11,000 Bq M3, Pu239, Am241 AIRBORNE see wind map about 6 min into this vid. [link to www.youtube.com]

The release was modeled to occur at 8 PM local time on Feb. 14, at an altitude of 50 meters. Cities near the path of the plutonium include Roswell NM, Lubbock TX, Wichita Falls TX, San Angelo TX, and Elk City OK. Wichita Falls got it twice.

Each red triangle is a 24-hour interval. Plutonium release at U.S. nuclear facility: “We don’t know what happened… don’t know whether it could happen again” — “Big problem is…how much is continuing to be released?” — Officials “know very little about extent of problem or how to solve it”

"An independent analysis has uncovered trace amounts of plutonium in an air sensor a half mile from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southeastern New Mexico — the first time plutonium is believed to have leaked outside from within the facility. It also was the highest levels of plutonium ever detected near the nuclear waste storage facility in its 15 years of operation, according to Russell Hardy, director of the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center."

The real readings are as follows, stop being sensationalist:

CEMRC, the New Mexico authority that monitors outside the WIPP plutonium facility has provided some usable readings for the leaks.

CEMRC found at the filter 1/2 mile offsite from WIPP:
0.64 Bq of Americium 241
0.092 Bq of Plutonium 239+240
These are assumed to be in meters squared (m3) since that is the unit CEMRC has used for previous readings.

The news is bad enough without trying to scare people with silly figures.
