Smart phone zombies and the dumbing down of society through social media.

What do you find is the best way to help?

i mean i understand the concept of a simple cell phone for emergencies and such ya know.

but it has moved wayyyyyyyyyy past that.. its a different thing entirely .... it is literally herding all the sheep effectively and collectively .

the whole idea of it is just plain WRONG.

I only have the cell phone for emergencies (especially since pay phones are a thing of the past). I hate the thing, but find it is a necessity in the world today. Just never use it otherwise.

that is the ONLY reason to have a cell. emergency .

but checking your facebook status or your email or your twitter or whatever else it is these mindless fucks do is mind boggling to say the least.

and texting ohh man that shit really gets my goat. stupid fuckin meaningless words transfered back and forth and back and forth.. if you wanna talk to someone and you have something to say CALL THEM get your fuckin point across and hang up.

This is common now with social media - anytime someone goes somewhere they want to post updates to their "followers" about exactly where they are and what they are doing. For example, sad to say I know this couple who will go to a spa together and while at the spa they will each separately post updates all about their spa experience on their twitter pages. Or when they go to a restaurant - instead of sitting there enjoying each others' company they are each on their mobile devices posting photos of the food, etc. They really want everyone to think they have this great relationship and do lots of stuff together but while they are doing it they don't even speak to each other, they are more concerned about posing to their "followers" and presenting an image of a happy couple rather than interacting with each other and actually being a happy couple. I should be shamed to say that we look at their twitter pages for comedy, to make fun of how fake they are.

see , this is a perfect example of what i mean.

that is a relationship that is in a constant downward spiral because of this stupid technology.

a couple cant even go out to eat a meal without posting every detail on the internet.. its a sad sad world we live in.

Me and my fiance are the exact opposite of this.. we will go get chinese food turn off all the lights and eat by candle light.. and there is never any social garbage to fuck that up.

and we do this all the time(not just chinese btw) and weve been together 4 years.

i must admit she does hassle me to get her a smart phone... but i will never do that and always talk her out of it with my logic.. but every now and then she trys it on me.

i refuse to let my future wife become one of these people.

This is the worst part about it! I got a lift some time ago with a friend and we just about broadsided some dizzy women who because she was on the phone forgot she was meant to give way but as she drives right in front of us with her head crushed into her shoulder she laughed and pointed to the phone and mouthed Oops sorry about that.

Other than that I've seen a guy walk into a tree and another fall over a garden wall because they had face in the screen.

I would like to think so but then I think they no doubt updated their twatter feed with "silly me I fell over a wall"

Have you noticed most of them don't even have their phones on? They are just going through the motions of doing something....anything.

OP, I hope you aren't expecting this to get better before it gets worse. The proof is in the fact that in many countries, kids are getting cell phones and smart phones at a younger and younger age constantly. To the point that, often teens are EXPECTED to have one. When one grows up with something as common, expect it to be a lifelong habit. Same goes for Facebookish type sites.

yes, i know all too well.. thats the whole reason i started this thread... kids these days are fucked , and they arent going to know what to do when shit goes down... they will look to their little devices for answers but the answers will be gone , and the will be stuck with the question of "what do i do now? what happens next"

i've got an 8 year old child and im trying my damndest to riddle his life of such treachery ... but his mother and i are split up and she decided it was a good idea to get him an obama phone. so the seed is already planted, and ive got to figure out a way to thwart this evil scheme.

Yep, 8/10 times it's some twat with the oversized sunglasses and hair tied back in a SUV "mommy tank" with no other passengers tapping away or completely lost on a phone.

Probably feels "safer" in a 30k$ SUV hubby bought her to fit all the crap they buy. They feel free to tailgate other drivers that dare slow her texting down. Sure men do it too but there is an epidemic of women, try counting them for fun. Why drive expensive cars but don't use at least Buetooth?? Stay out of the same lane as them.

If mother will allow it, taking him camping (or anything out of cell phone range) might be a good idea. You could also ask her to not let him have any type of social media access for "safety reasons." You probably can't stop it, but maybe at least you can slow it down some.

My husband has a tracfone, he is a delivery person, so needs it for work. No-one has his number but me and our daughter. It doesn't even have a camera on it. My daughter also has a tracfone, I buy 120 minutes every THREE months and there is usually a surplus. I still do not own a cell phone.

My daughter would love a smart phone, but at the same time knows that her time is precious and that she will probably become addicted, so she won't ask for one. She would be afraid to lose it anyway, those things aren't cheap and the plans are outrageous.

Even old people are on them now.

It is always in the hand, oblivious to their surroundings. It is an excellent "cure" for social anxiety; fidgeting used to be looked upon with scorn, now it is normal.

You might see me out there. Wool sweater, jeans, hands stuffed in pockets, looking around at the mindless masses frittering away the precious moments of their lives on the mundane minutia of a life bereft of passion.
