The Infamous Galactic Center Source G2: Gas Cloud or Star?

Look up in the sky! Is that a cloud or a star? This is exactly what one of our very own astrobites authors, Kim Phifer, is asking about for the galactic center source G2. Discovered just last year and discussed in this astrobite, G2 was originally thought to be a gas cloud with a mass of about 3 earth masses headed directly toward our galaxy’s central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. However, G2 might be something quite different as previously suggested by this article in which the authors suggest that G2 might be a low-mass star with a strong stellar wind which produces a bow shock as it orbits the black hole. Another possibility is that G2 may be a star surrounded by a protoplanetary disk as discussed in this previous astrobite. The question that these authors aim to answer is: Is G2 a gas cloud or a star? In this article, the authors look at both spectral and imaging data to determine the orbital properties and spatial shape of G2 to determine the answer to this question...

Recent observations of the G2 cloud made in the near infrared at the Keck Observatory indicate that the G2 cloud will reach its closest approach to the Galactic center around mid March of 2014 instead of June of this year. In their paper preprint, astronomers Phifer, et al. place the date of the G2 cloud’s closest encounter with the Galactic core at somewhere between the end of January 2014 and the beginning of May 2014 with a median date of mid March. Moreover they estimate that G2′s orbit will take the cloud twice as close to the GC than previously thought. The distance of closest approach is now predicted to be 130 astronomical units (AU) rather than 266 AU, as previously thought.

A lot of people keep saying these things, and nothing comes to pass. However, it is absolutely true that high civilizations have punctuated our history in cyclic rhythms, written in the movement of the cosmos and expressed in our current consciousness understanding as sacred geometry through precessional cycles which is all reflected in the very fabric of our universe. We ARE due, and something is certainly going to happen. Any objective observation of what is happening on this planet in relation to cosmic cycles as presented to us through ancient civilizations reveals this very clearly. Will this be the event? Perhaps. I hope so. But it seems almost nobody understands the full implications and spiritual evolution underpinning these cosmic patterns of growth.

Regardless, we are in great times of change, and we will be seeing some amazing things in our lifetime. Peace.
