Like I said, to me it all comes back to flow of energy. Electricity. Let's start with chemical electrics. Mercury Cell [ link to en.wikipedia.org] What does a mercury battery have to do with alchemy? My thoughts were with electricity and plasma. We know plasma can fuse elements into new ones. I don't know anything about alchemy, but processes that create electricity might be a good place to start.
